What do you generally need to get national achievement semi? how about commended?

Commended takes about a 200. Semifinalist REALLY depends on your state. Some east coast states are up there around 220 while some in the midwest are at or below 210

national achievement, not national merit

I think you need an index score in the 190s for national achievement semi finalist. For finalist, i think you also need a 3.5 gpa and to turn in the required paperwork and to have an SAT score that indicates you didn't cheat on the PSAT.
My son had a 206 index and didn't make finalist because he stupidly decided to goof off fall semester senior year after getting some acceptances. His grades drastically fell, and National Achievement wrote him that his gpa was why he did not get finalist.
Incidentally, his PSAT put him in the commended range for National Merit, something few black kids achieve. He had a good chance to get a National Achievement scholarship, but blew it by goofing off.

do you know what the ranges are for commended?

i don't know about National Achievement commended. I think they are a relatively new category and few people are interested in it. I am not aware of any doors like special scholarship programs opening because of National Achievement commended.
