i heard that every year, a UC school is chosen that will guarantee admission to the top 20% (or something like that). Is that true???

By Dori (Dori) on Saturday, March 15, 2003 - 04:50 pm: Edit

there's a program where the top 15% (i think) gets into the UC SYSTEM automatically, but not necessarily the school they want to go to. i'll see if i can find a link to something with info for u.

thank you so much! when i first heard that i was like "UCLA, here i come" haahaa

Top 10 percent gets you into a UC school but not necessarily the school of your choice, assuming you have the UC qualifying course load. Top 4 percent gets you in under some circumstances if you don't have the qualifying courseload...this is to address the problem of kids going to crappy schools that don't necessarily offer all the right courses.

I'm a little hazy on the 4 percent rule but I'm told that *lots* of people are confused, even people who work in the UC.

um..actually, its only the top 3% rule that guarantees an acceptance at A UC. Thats the extent of it.

I'm believe that you're mistaken but I can check with the Very Reliable Source in the morning and, if necessary, come up with citations on Monday.

By Jumbo (Jumbo) on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 01:59 pm: Edit

hm...cuz thats what the award said for all the students who got it. (I didn't get it, but the award is meaningless to everyone at my school since 60% end up at UC's anyways and are overqualified for this award. It's basically to secure a spot for those students who are at a really junky high school and need to get into A UC)

By Lemmethink (Lemmethink) on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 02:01 pm: Edit

do you know what the exact percent is and what UC school is chosen?

By Callmecollege (Callmecollege) on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 02:39 pm: Edit

guys, it is the top 4% of ur senior class. ur school sends the transcripts of the top 4% to the uc system, which reviews them or something, thereby notifying u if u completed all that needs to be done (just like 10 courses, i think). then ur guaranteed to get into at least ONE UC. If u go to a dumb school, then its UC Riverside for u!

By Lemmethink (Lemmethink) on Sunday, March 16, 2003 - 02:42 pm: Edit

What if you are number one in the class? [out of 850 : )

I don't think you'll find them thedad.

Here's the official announcements on the applicable program. First press release shows that top 4% are guaranteed admission to a UC school but not necessarily one of their choice. Second one shows addition to that policy where those between top 4% and top 12.5% will be given admission to a UC school (but not necessarily one of their choice) by transfer after first completing some community college time. The entire policy has somewhat limited applicability because it ends up being for those who otherwise do not qualify with the combined ranking and SAT scores. In other words, it can get you in if you blow the SAT's and otherwise would not be admitted. The "10%" rule mentioned above has to do with the schools submitting their top 10% so the UC board can then determine for itself the top 4% as criteria used by the schools may differ from theirs.

Jumbo, haven't even had the time yet.

Drusba's post is ringing some bells and he has thoughtfully provided links.
