I just got my ACT score today, I took it at the end of tenth grade. I got a 32. I am kind of not happy with my score. I think that it is pretty bad. Any comments or anything? Should i retake the test next year?
By Drusba (Drusba) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 09:06 am: Edit
32 is a very high score (usually 99th percentile) and in the usual range of those admitted to even the elite colleges, although in the lower range for MIT and Caltech (which usually have the highest average scores of any colleges).
Depending on where you intend to apply, you may have to take it again next year (in second semester) or the new SAT. For the 2006 applicant to college, many colleges are going to require submission of either the new SAT that starts next year with the writing section or the new ACT that starts next year with the optional writing section (and require you take that option). For example, all the UC's have that requirement. Others may allow you to fill in the "writing" requirement with the SAT II writing and still others will just take the old tests. So check with colleges you intend to apply to for actual rules that will apply.

How much longer do you think it'll take for scores to arrive in the mail?
By Crazylicious (Crazylicious) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 02:44 pm: Edit
32 = 1420, amazing
hunter1985: wow 35 = 1580, how many did you get wrong and how did you prepare for the test if you did?
By Hunter1985 (Hunter1985) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 04:24 pm: Edit
Thanks Crazylicious, I'm not sure how many I got wrong, but I know, subscore wise, I got a 36 (18/18/18) in math, 35 science, 34 reading (17 SS, 18 arts/lit), and 34 english (18 mechanics, 16 rhetorical).
I really didn't prep, I took the SAT IIs the week before, and I sort of reviewed Geo/Trig math stuff, so I guess was enough of a refresher. Other than that, I had an awesome grammer teacher this past year, and she also made us do a lot of critical reading, so that helped with the rest of the sections.
A lot of the ACT is just being able to quickly read and analyze , as well as knowing a few trig formulas. Endurance is another part as well- being able to trudge through so many reading sections, and then being able to analyze graphs/charts in the science part. Bottom line, know trig formulas, grammer rules, and be able to read quickly and competently.
So yeah, I've been on a bit of a high today, I'm hoping this sort of "wraps up" Georgetown and George Washington, and hopefully makes a strong case for Harvard and/or MIT.
Anything in the 30's is awesome though, congrats to all. Nothing to be ashamed of if you get in the 30's.
By Korey (Korey) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 04:55 pm: Edit
Congrats to all on those awesome scores! How long do you think it will be before scores arrive through regular US mail?
By Ilcapo (Ilcapo) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 05:22 pm: Edit
Hunter - hate to break it to you, but nothing "wraps up" Georgetown.
By Hunter1985 (Hunter1985) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 05:45 pm: Edit
Well, considering that the rest of my app is (IMO) pretty good, this sort of completes ie. cherry on top for my app. I'm pretty sure it's good enough to get me in to G-Town. Don't stress out, anywho I think George Washington is a better school, and I'm almost positive I can get in there.

36 is the highest possible score.
By Mattman (Mattman) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 07:46 pm: Edit
You made a 32 as only a sophomore? That's absolutely terrible!
But seriously, I don't see how you could possibly be concerned. You are *done* with standardized tests before you even *start* your junior year, unless you're applying to one of the top 10 colleges in the nation.
By the way, it is easy to irk some people when you're complaining about your scores that put you in the top 1% of the nation.

I got mine in the mail today. I live in the South. Got a 30. Got a 30 last time too. (4 months ago.) Now, I don't know what to do. I was planning to not retake my SAT since I was expecting a lot higher on my ACT. (1350) What do you think I should do? Do colleges take the scores from each ACT section from different tests and average them together to form a higher score? Please help./
By Mattman (Mattman) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 01:52 pm: Edit
No, *most* colleges only look at your composite ACT score, not the "superscore" of the highest of each field (unlike the SAT). A 1350 and 30 are really good scores, from your list of schools and assuming you're a California resident I'd say you'd get in easily to Georgia Tech, UC Los Angeles, UC Berkeley, UT Austin, and maybe Rice. If you're really concerned with getting into Stanford, Columbia, or MIT though I'd strongly recommend you retake the SAT.
By Ecnerwalc (Ecnerwalc) on Friday, June 25, 2004 - 02:27 pm: Edit
I was hoping to send the ACT scores to the other schools. I don't live in California.
Colleges combine highest SAT scores, no?

When I took it in April I got a 34E/32M/35R/29S = 33.
I took it in June and got 36E/35M/27R/30S = 32.
Is it possible for me to report the highest subscores from both test dates to make 36E/35M/35R/30S = 34 composite? I was really distracted during the reading portion the second time I took the test.

I got my ACT score in the mail today (I live in Arizona)
34 English, 31 math, 35 reading, 27 science
composite = 32
I went in fully cold... whee!
btw, I have a question. for Reading it says that I got full marks in both subsections, 18/18. so why is my score 35 and not 36 for that? weak.
By Jefiner41 (Jefiner41) on Saturday, June 26, 2004 - 02:03 am: Edit
For all of you people who received outstanding subscores in reading, how do you do it?! lol!
I'm not known as the fasted reader, but I'm really slow either. If I really speed, I get distracted, and I end up reading the entire paragraph again. The highest score I've ever gotten on it (taking it again in September) is 24.
ANY help or tips whatsoever??
By Mattman (Mattman) on Saturday, June 26, 2004 - 02:09 am: Edit
The entire Reading section is all about understanding what is going on in the passages. I suggest that you underline relevant parts or star areas where you think they'll ask questions. Some people tell you to read the questions first and skim the passage, but I'd advise against it because you have very limited time so just read it carefully once and upon reading the question, go to where you remember underlining it.
I took ACT twice and reading was my best score both times, a 31 and 32 subscore.

I got mine today and took the June 8th test date. (I'm in Illinois) I finally got the 33 I wanted, up from a 32 last time. I'm happy considering I had no test prep. What sunk me last time was my math score - only a 30, because my calculator ran out of batteries during the test. So only SAT IIs to go, and I'm happy with all of my scores.
Good job, everyone! Now relax, it's summer time!

32. think im gonna go jump off a bridge.
27v, 35m, 31r, 35s. 32C. lower than my 1490SAT. was really hoping for a 34. or atleast 33. think i killed my chances at amherstED, unless i can retake before applying. are those scores good enough for rice or amherst, maybe even stern or JHU? im really sad about that 35m and 35s, how the hell did i not get a 36math?
By Needhelp06 (Needhelp06) on Monday, June 28, 2004 - 04:13 pm: Edit
ok, so now whats the deal with sending these ACT scores to colleges? Do we get to choose whether they go to colleges or not and are they on are high school transcript no matter what?
By Korey (Korey) on Monday, June 28, 2004 - 05:20 pm: Edit
If you want your score report to be sent to a college(s) then you should've filled out which colleges you wanted it to be sent when you signed up, but ACT allows you to order seperate score reports for a fee (visit the website). I'm not sure about the transcript thing...I've heard that some schools list your ACT scores on it and some schools don't. Ask your counselor.

I'm going to break a commoon online grammar rule to instill a lesson in everyone here:
IF YOU SCORE IN THE 30'S YOU ARE PERFECTALLY FINE FOR ALMOST ANY COLLEGE. DO NOT FLIP OUT OVER A 32, ASSUMING THE REST OF YOUR APP IS GOOD, YOU HAVE A REASONABLE SHOT AT ALMOST ANY COLLEGE!

I am not sending this score as I did better on SAT (1320) and SAT II (760,740,690). I am not retaking this horrible test either as they don't give you enough time on the sections IMO. I will retake the SAT I, however.
