What's IB stand for? Are those available in place of APs?
| By Yz16 (Yz16) on Saturday, June 12, 2004 - 05:02 am: Edit |
IB = international baccalaureate.
Yes, they're available in place of APs - however, if they're taken as part of the full IB Diploma...the general sentiment is that it's much harder. IB certificates (i.e. just sitting IB exams without all the extra IB requirements to complete) aren't anything special .... you can get the same number of credits for taking an IB subject as you can get for taking an AP subject.
Internationally, IB diploma candidates are much more respected than AP-testers by far.
Within the US, it's regarded the same as APs i.e. (Although some top tier schools are totally after full IB diploma candidates). IMo, barring learning for learning's sake...if you're headed to the US, just do AP. IB's kind of not worth all the work relative to the work it is.
of course this is only my opinion : ).
| By Tamy02 (Tamy02) on Saturday, June 12, 2004 - 06:07 am: Edit |
Yes I dont think the IB diploma is worth all the stress, because if you r goin off to a US university, u don't even get the diploma b4 u start applyin. Like u get ur acceptances b4 u even get the diploma. Im doin 3 IB certificates and 1AP class byt the end of my senior year! and just doin 3 IB certificates is soo stressful! Extremly hard!:P AHhHh....and the thing with IB is that its a 2 year course...like over the summer i woulda prob forgotten everythign i learnt this year. So i mean if you had a choice between IB and AP and u r goin to the states..choose AP! Some unis in the states dont even recognise the IB

My first four-point-oh EVER in my life; I was a huge slacker freshman year, and now I'm paying the price -_-. I was very close last semester, but the funny thing is I didn't get an A- for that class simply cause I didn't turn in a few homework assignments due to slackage..

this is incredible. i think this messageboard is a great place to either inflate your ego, or seriously diminish it, no joke. but anyways, i'm just gonna rant about something - how finals are worth so much and how they can make two A's for third and fourth quarter end up in a B+ for the final grade, which was my case in chem, ha. my parents are psycho asians and they're gonna ruin my summer if they see this, sooo i hid my grades and hope they never find out. haha i know, im a bad kid.

how do colleges compare students in schools w/ weighted to those in school w/ unweighted GPA's? Like, for instance, my school has unweighted GPA's and so lots of people have 4.0's. How would that compare to a student in another school w/ like a 4.1 or higher? The college doesnt know that the unweighted gpa student couldnt have gotten the higher GPA had the school had weighted grades. what do you guys think?

When the registrar sends out transcripts to the colleges you have requested, he/she includes with it a sheet of paper called a School Profile, which gives the particulars of your High School's grading system--specifically, extra points given and your weighting system. Also included in the school profile is the # of and what AP's are available at your high school. Also, what % of HS grads go to 4 yr/2 yr/and vocational schools after graduation. All this gives the colleges a perspective on your particular background.

The worst thing happened to me on Friday. It was so bad I couldn't come to this board until today. About 2 weeks ago I got my report card in the mail and I had all A's for the final grades in all of my classes. I had expected that because I had gotten my grades from my teachers before I left school. On Friday I got another report card that said I had a B for my final grade in Spanish. I got my little sheet that I keep track of grades on and triple checked my Spanish grade. I am supposed to have an A. I am so confused right now. I want to go to school and find out what they did. Before leaving school I double checked with my Spanish teacher to make sure I had an A. She kept confusing my grade with the grade of the girl above me in the grade book so I am hoping that is what she did. I have been going crazy all weekend because of this and I really don't want to have to tell my parents that I have a B. I know that to most of you this seems really stupid but I need this A.

wow i didn't realize that so many schools just have letter grades. what constitutes an A, B, or C? What's the difference between A+ and A-? At my school we get number grades and A's are considered 95-100, B's are 85-94, and C's are 75-84.
Maybe my school is just weird. Our GPA system is messed up, they have us on a 5.0 scale instead of a normal 4.0 scale.
I'm so glad they do weighting at my school though. I feel so bad for you guys that are working so hard and still have people who take stupid classes in rank ahead of you.
