is it worth retaking a 780? how much better does an 800 look than a 780?

Well, it depends on whether or not they see your percentile. An 800 means you could have scored between something like 92% and 100%, whereas a 780 means you definitely scored below that range. If you are sure you can get an 800, have the time, the cash, and you really want to, then take it again. If you are unsure about whether or not you'd be able to pull off an 800, don't take it again - Your score is good enough that you don't really need to, and if it went down that wouldn't look good.

if you want to go to an ivy you should retake it. The IIC curve is insanely generous so a 780 isn't very impressive. If you don't want to apply to any Ivy then forget about it

The fact that you even posted being unhappy with a 780 brought us some laughs so thanks.
Really, be pleased with your ability and focus on other things now like appreciating your life and getting on with ECs, internships, volunteer work and some fun with the friends you will soon be bidding goodbye to when you go to college.

780 is not impressive, *if* you're applying to a top engineering school. Otherwise, it is a very decent score. Most people whose major is related more or less to math and go to a top school have 800's.
