Discus: SAT/ACT Tests and Test Preparation: May 2004 Archive: What distinguishes YOU from everybody else?
By Rbc13 (Rbc13) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 07:46 pm: Edit

I want to see how everybody on this board stacks up. Don't be modest, and don't be afraid to brag. In fact only bragging is permited on this post, so no modesty whatsoever. Everybody post facts(that can be proved) that make you stand out from everybody else, and would make any corporation, college, or whatever go gaga for you. Write as much as you can think of, all lengths are acceptable. If you can write 10 pages worth of facts about you, go ahead. Just make sure to bullet or number them.

I am 1 of 4 students to have ever placed top 30 in the Chem Olympiad, Physics Olympiad and USAMO. I've been to MoSP 3 times and was the captain of the USA Math team twice. Plus, I volunteer at the hospital every Sunday.

By Calidan (Calidan) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 08:02 pm: Edit

-I started a fund raising group at my school for the local children's hospital.
-I started playing piano only 3 years ago, and am already able to play fairly difficult peices (i.e. Chopin, Schumann, Bach, Lizst, etc.)
-I am the only person at my school who takes 2 language courses.
-I work at a soup kitchen on the weekends, as well as at the zoo volunteering.
-I also have a part-time job.
-I am related to President Garfield, John C. Calhoun, and James Caldwell (one of the five killed in the Boston Massacre). (This part doesn't really matter, I just think it's interesting!)

I don't know if all of this is that special, but I'm proud of what I do.

Ok who feels absurdly inferior to Vinny? Who I think is only a sophomore?

and I was proud of semifinaling in the USABO and USNCO...(only person in my school to ever take those tests though!)

By Rbc13 (Rbc13) on Friday, May 14, 2004 - 08:08 pm: Edit

This is good, but I was speaking more of academically and inside of high school, a situation everybody can relate to, but you went beyond the expected. The longer the list the better. Ex.

My GPA is x
My rank is x
I have never been absent/only absent x days
I have never gotten less than a x grade in..
I have never been late/only been late for any class x times

Things more like these types of items, and try to just state them.

"I CELEBRATE myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you."

Remove your red balloons, undo them from yourself - you are you.
Burn your solipsistic tablature, in doing so you affirm yourself.

Also,
As Walt wisely advised: sing yourself.
And Waldo: be "Man Thinking".

I'm a fatalist, genetic determinist, but also a Social Darwinist. I can p!ss people off easily because of my revolutionary thinking. People think I'm irrational, but that's the same thing they told Columbus, Copernicus, Galileo, Thoreau. lol

I'm pretty sure Vinny is kidding. The IMO team doesn't have a captain, for one thing, and I can't think of anyone at MOP last summer that fits his description.

As for myself:
-I can tie both shoes in less than 5 seconds. No joke. There's this chinese method I know that is hella fast.

Yeah, that's about it. Oh, and I'm not bad at math, music, or swimming. Some stats are in my info, if you're that curious.

My GPA is: not the highest a college has ever seen.
My rank is: also not the highest a college has ever seen.
I have only been absent: when I felt like staying home.
I have received: several grades that I did not deserve (most of them As) and thus see the inanity of the grading system.
I have never been late: without a reason that made sense to me.

Seriously, if you want to know what makes a person stand out, don't just ask for a list of numbers.

By Twinkletoes696 (Twinkletoes696) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 04:52 pm: Edit

I am an extremely interesting mix between being highly social and having a very strong academic drive. I defy every stereotype people try to stick me in.I fit in, but I refuse to conform to something I don't believe in, and regardless of going against the grain when I felt it was appropriate, I've retained and strengthened many friendships. I did what I want in terms of academics and didn't bother taking classes I wasn't interested in after awhile. I smile a lot and I'm usually happy. I will fight for what I believe in and am very loyal and devoted, but I am extremely friendly, willing to compromise, and easy to get along with. I've worked extremely hard to get to where I am but I don't measure myself by my GPA or my SAT scores. I did well overall, but I realized there is more to me than a bunch of numbers on a piece of paper. The colleges admissions process really made it apparent to me that I wasn't going to compete with those who have taken 14 APs and have sky high SAT scores, but I had done well enough on my own terms and was going to be able to get places based on other things I had done and being an interesting person. I played my own game and am winning it...and I believe that is what distinguishes me from everyone else.

I'm not Asian. I'm Puerto Rican. I read non-school books. I'm not on Science Olympiad; I took that American Mathematics thing and didn't qualify; I don't play tennis, piano, or violin; I've gotten B's before, because I do other things.
I have good enough scores to not care.
And all the colleges at which I'm looking don't much care, either.

I've qualified and gone to John Hopkin-sponsored CTY aka NERD CAMP for five years in a row, how cool is that.

I'm a virtuoso pianist and was once concertmistress for my orchestra (but isn't this a given for all Asians? :))

Between now and graduation (I'm a junior) $30,000+ of the school's money will have gone through my hands.

I am determined to start a communist club in my school.

My math team (consisting of me and 3 other girls) won counties in 8th grade and got to go on an overnight field trip up to Troy to compete. We stayed at the Holiday Inn and got an entire coach bus to ourselves.

I'm 3/4 Taiwanese and 1/4 Dutch (no I do not look like Kristen Kreuk).

Um... I'm engaged at 17? To be married at 22. That's pretty much it. I was definitely more of a prodigy in middle school than in HS, when I entered my age of decline....

I could take you to school in a game of one-on-one even though I'm only 5'9. Trust me. I once made 15 out of 34 consecutive shots from halfcourt (that's 47 feet, bro). I can dunk a volleyball, too (and a basketball, but only while wearing high-heeled shoes).

And I just noticed in the post above mine, there are the words 'dual lang' which look like Luol Dang, who I couldn't school.
