can someone list some of the roles of the media in government, like affecting public opinion, campaigns, etc?

"Gatekeeper" - picks which issues they feel should get coverage. Those are the only issues the public knows of b/c of their coverage, and the public thinks they're the most important.

"Scorekeeper" - keeps track of the politicians' race, or tabs on the war, etc.

"Watchdog" - picks up on candidate's private life, some times makes them look good, but usually is something scandalous and hurtful.
