Hello guys,

As you have known, I've been a frequent poster on this message board for a long time. Two days ago, I'd finished taken the AP Calc exam and felt that the exam was challenging. On the exam itself, there were few questions that I thought were questionable. Hurried to learn others' perspectives on the exam, I found a thread called the Official Calc BC thread and posted several questions regarding the exam before the 48 hours deadline. ETS has a strict enforcement on this agreement and I'd violated the agreement by sharing some undisclosed information that could encourage cheating. The moderator warned me of this startling fact but I ignored his heeding, believing that ETS can't trace the nick back to me. Well, I've been exposed and will possibly face the consequences. According to the rules, ETS will cancel all of my AP scores and forbid me from taking any more AP exam.

I'm not here to preach to you guys about the consequences of your actions because all of you are smart individuals who consistently make decisions in your lives. I understand that the emotion can be overwhelming after an AP exam and your action can be a spurt in the moment. As you read my post, I hope you will refrain from disclosing any AP material and abide by the 48 hours agreement. As a victim, I'll likely face the consequences but you don't have to face this fate. While I think that the 48 hours rule is unnecessary, I think we should be courteous and control ourselves for two days. My action may aid others in cheating or it may not but countless students, including the handicaps, will waste at least 30 mins-1 hours by exchanging test booklets because of a few keystrokes. The rule and the consequences are certainly important but let's remember our purpose. As we strive day after in the classroom, our goal is to ace the exam and receive the college credit. We pay a hefty sum to take this exam and it would be a shame to throw away our effort and good money because we can't control ourselves. I hope that my sacrifice will be fruitful for future references. Good day.

Wait a minute..

There's got to be someone with the same name as you.. So how do they know its exactly you? And why can't you deny that its just your nickname or something?

And also, you can always deny it by saying someone was using your username to post the answers. .

I don't understand how this could happen. The advantage of a messafe board is Anonymity.

BTW, even without your name, I think ETS has a number of ways to trace it back to you.

For example, a lot of people has their email address under display in their profile. An ETS official could pretend to be a CC regular and ask a question via email. Once you answer them, they will receive your full name.

If you post your stats under your profile, they could narrow you down or look back to the history of your posts. While I think it's fun to think of ways to trick the system, I don't think it's wise to put yourself in the position in the first place.

I really don't know how they trace it back to me frankly. I'm Asian and there're plenty of Asians who have my name and take Calc BC on that day.

Dude, they just call my school yesterday and I have to talked to my principal about it because they were threatening to close down the school. Do you think I was dumb? I tried to deny the facts yesterday but my principals told me that they have the evidences on their hand.

Thunder, you do realize that there's something that's called an IP address right. An IP address can pinpoint a poster's location. Usually, the Ip address reveals the city or town you live in. If ETS has your city/town and do a message search by using your name, how long do you think it will take them to gather the needed statistics and narrow you down.

If you want to experiment with your conjecture and risk losing at least $80 bucks of good cash, go right ahead. Also, I'm a senior and the penalty of not taking any more AP exam might not affect me, but it would be stupid on your part to risk losing good cashes and risking your future. Here's a correlation for you kids:

Muchos APs = Higher Chance For Dream College

I'm going to the best LAC in the country in the Fall of 2005. Therefore, I can sit here and explain the consequence to you. If I'm a sophomore or junior, I would literally cry myself because my chance of college acceptance has gone down the toilet. It really sucks that my scores are down the toilet because I thought I did extremly well on the AP Lang and Calc BC exam despite my complaints. You guys ever think that CC is run by some collegeboard members? They obviously can't go after everyone, so they created a system in which people will be willing to share their feelings right under the collegeboard's control itself, and then go after the most notorious of them. Like the "matrix". - Just a wild idea

And most IP addresses are dynamic, meaning they change everytime you connect to the internet. Plus how would they have obtained your IP address if CC doesn't disclose that information to others. Matching names isn't accurate enough; you must had other information openly obtainable that connected you with the collegeboard somehow, like possibly in any of all your previous posts ever on this board. I would be careful about thinking how easily you think you are screwed; you might have a privacy issue on your side. Hire a lawyer at least.

A question I have: unless my signature was forged or I have amnesia, I was never asked to sign anything agreeing not to discuss the free response questions for 48 hours, so what "agreement" is being broken here? On the multiple-choice section, everyone signs saying that they will never talk about them again, etc., and on the free-response section, you put in your initials instead of your signature to assert that you have no foreknowledge of the questions. Where do the 48 hours enter into this contract?

frankly, this person really sounds like someone from the college board trying to scare us naive kids into realizing the "severe consequences." The post sounds too much like an adult posing as a kid. I dunno... I don't buy it.

Dorkface, you should do some research before speaking. Quite a number of students have already paid the severe consequences and they did NOT have the benefits of multiple warnings. Tri N made the mistake to ignore several warnings. Do not make the same error to believe that this is a hoax. The College Board WILL protect the integrity of its tests and is seemingly not sparing any effort or expense, an action that should be applauded by all honest test takers. Not following the rules is NOT helping anyone!

Tri N is doing a remarkable thing by giving all members the benefit of an additional warning. Please read the warnings and the official position of College Confidential. This is a public board and ANYONE can read your posts that are also easily picked up by search engines. As I said before, despite repeated efforts, moderators can only repeat the warnings and cannot force anyone to pay attention.

Interesting that you should point that out. I'll have to ask my psych teacher who's a former lawyer... One time a girl passed around a "contract" for prom limos (Once you've signed it, you pay for the lim no matter what). He said that the contract is illegal because anything that is signed by a minor without a parent's signature is illegitmate. Sooooo.... Since we only initial our name, not full, authentic names and more than half of us are under 18... how is that legitimate?! (gosh, I sound like I should be ready for AP US Gov't exam!)

Can't for Monday to ask him... haha.

I'm not an expert on the legal system, but my guess is as follows: Since the implication of this limo contract was that there would be legal action involved if someone did not pay, it would fail because it wasn't really a binding contract.

The College Board, however, isn't threatening legal action (though possibly they could, I'm not sure). They're warning that they will cancel a score you received on THEIR test and prohibit you from taking further tests. (By 'you' I mean any person, not you specifically) Since they're a private company and own the rights to all their tests, I think they sort of make the rules when it comes to requests of nondisclosure.

But um... I honestly don't know. I'm taking AP Gov next year, so maybe I'll find out.

ETS is a private corporation.

When you bubble in your information and sign on the MC sheet that you have agreed to all the rules of ETS, you enter into a private contract with ETS. In any case, I think a private contract is freed from governmental regulation.

Actually that is correct. You do enter into a contract - but you have to realize that as a minor you have the right to disaffirm a contract in US. Thus any contract made with a minor is never binding (unless your guardian agrees to it as well).

The question though is that they still can cancel your grade - the signature is more of a warning than anything else as far as I see it.

Tri N - I feel really bad about what happened to you. You probably feel horrible right now. I want to applaud you for telling us about your unfortunate situtation - usually it takes something like this for people to get into shape. Personally, I think the policy is way too strict - the College Board has literally hundreds of days to make up new questions and they don't even do that? They charge us $82 to take the test (thank God my school reumburses (sp?) all students who pass) and yet claim to be a "non-profit organization. Nevertheless, I just want to let you know that I respect you for turning an ugly situtation into a better one by trying to help other people in it.

You guys arguing about the legality of the contract you signed is kind of silly. The ideas your presenting are obviously complicated enough to know that you understood the implications of what you did when you signed. Initialing the back of the booklet signified that you would abide by all the rules of the ETS including the ones your procter read aloud which were also posted in the AP booklet which, in words on the booklet, it said you were agreeing to. "I agree to all of the rules as laid out by ETS and the CB in the AP booklet" or something like that. Tri N is right, we should just hold off until the 48 hours are up, and Tri N, thanks for the warning. It sucks what happened to, but thanks for trying to help other people out so they dont suffer the same as you.

CB is non-profit but ETS isn't I don't think. All the money goes to ETS. College board only takes what it needs to maintain itself like hiring whatever employees and stuff. CB is the middle man, ETS has a golf course.

Yes, we can talk about lawsuits here but my family will be devastated with the drama. Financially, I think we're sufficient enough to support ourselves but we're not literally stacked with gold. Both of my parents are immigrants and have no idea about the law in this country. At worst, I will explain the situation to my college and they will give me a test. Because Amherst doesn't accept AP credit, the consequences are inconsequential. My scores on the APs will save me the hassle of having to take standarized tests to place out of intro courses.

Of course, I can't say the same for everyone. If you're a sophomore or junior, this is an unnecessary risk for you to take. Feel free to express your individualism or rights if you feel infringed by ETS. In the end, you will be caught. As a multibillion corporation, I think ETS has its own lawyer and is very well awared of the rules and laws in this country.

I don't know why people are doubting my credibility here because I'm here to help you. If you want to be a jerk, do whatever you want. For every jerk that ignores my warning, there will be ten of others who will be grateful for this thread. If you're one of those jerks, don't respond because this thread is for people who care about their future.

ETS might have broken countless rules regarding my privacy but how do I know that they have broken these rules. If you're registered to take any AP exam, they have your record on file including your scores from your SAT, SAT IIs, and previous AP exams. If you have broken a rule, all ETS has to do is go click on the message search of the left and type in your name to view all your messages. If you have revealed your stats, courseload, or any academic information on this message board, I strongly advise you to abide by the 48 hours rule. WIth sufficient information, they can pinpoint your location very quickly.

As for dynamic IP address's - they usually are in blocks that belong to different ISPs. If CB has your IP they can feasibly contact the ISP. The ISP will have a record of which user was using that ISP from their block at the time of the posting.

Don't get too hung up on legalities. Both the CB and the ETS have lots of leeway to cancel your scores if they detect anything unusual. They've done this successfully for years with regular SAT scores, and have lost very few cases (none, actually, until very recently.) Worse, even if you were to win, it would be a phyric victory, as the legal process is so slow you'd probably be in grad school before things were finally settled.

A good rule of thumb is that when it comes to legalities, ETS plays real hardball, and they have more money to spend on legal bills than most of us.

BTW, don't think the situation is any different in college. You are not required to obay any of the rules of a college. But they are then not required to give you a degree, or even tell anyone what grades you received.

I think that the College Board is extra paranoid this year because of the incident last year. A few kids and teachers in New York were caught sending information about the APUSH exam to people in California. The 3 hour difference allowed the people in CA to prepare for the exam after they found out what the questions were. My US history teacher was telling us that because she wanted us to be prepared just in case CB deciede to give a harder exam this year.

I think it's dumb that they re-use questions from Calculus. I can understand why they would do that for a subject like Bio; there are a limited number of questions that can be asked, because it's all factual, and the curriculum is limited. Calculus on the other hand is all number. Have the same TYPE of problem, but change the numbers around. Are they too lazy to do even that?

You may want to check the history of the issues before speaking. Your assessment of the situation is dead wrong. The OP has paid a heavy price for his carelessness and wants to help others NOT making the same mistake. There is no paranoia!

Tri_n: Take it to arbitration. I'm not too sure if Tri_n is faking or not. He/she hasn't been on CB too much. However, he did post a lot of answers and has replied to one of my posts. I say there is a 90% chance that he is for real.

It seems that CB will not seek legal action against CC, and thus only people that have no traceable info (like me) should post dangerous/iffy info. BTW, randomly put up and take off your e-mail address. It would be better if CC had a system of "IM" that goes from poster -> ID -> e-mail address which cannot be traced.

Back to Tri_n: Take it to arbitration if you don't want to be a freshman in college or want to take new tests for placement. If you feel its worth fighting tooth and nail over, go ahead. Sorry that this happened to you and wasted multiples of 82. I understand some of CB's policies, but some are....

I was so scared today. I sent the CB an e-mail about the 2nd question on the AP English Lit exam and when they replied with the same heading my heart started racing. BTW, the subject heading was "AP ENGLISH LIT EXAM COMMENT." Mess with CB if you know you'll win.

Ndbisme, your comment is ill-advised. Nobody should post dangerous/iffy info ... because the rules prohibit it. Tri N believed that his information was not traceable, and he was incorrect. As I said before, posters leave clues such as targeted colleges, acceptances, and wait lists. Is there an entity that has access to ALL your test scores and KNOWS whom the recipients were? Nbisme, just think about all the clues YOU left on this board? There is only ONE way to deal with this situation and it is to abide by the rules posted on CC. Again, is it so hard NOT to talk about the tests for 48 hours?

Concerning the school closing thing, I think what Tri_N is referring to is not whether the CB or ETS would attempt to close the school, but rather remove the privilege of that school to administer further AP tests.

Surely if the incident were real, collegeboard would tell us the truth because god knows they want to intimidate students as much as possible and prevent them from cheating

come on...college confidential profile is not like a ID card..it can all be written as "fake".

Tri_N, i feel you, people say "oh you shouldn't have said it", well COME ON people..simple eager mistake..to a big consequence, i know you guys will feel exactly like him if you were caught in the spot light. Bull shi ting or not, it doesn't matter. You're being a man for warning everyone and I respect you for that.

A simple eager mistake would not have resulted in Tri N's problems. His biggest mistake was to DEFIANTLY ignore several personal warnings and ignore the prominently posted warnings. I applaud Tri N's contrition but he paid the heavy price mostly for his attitude. I hope that this message won't be ignored by the members of CC.

OK. I read half the messages here. Obviously, CC gets A LOT of traffic because I can tell none of you read the SAT boards on here regularly. if you have, you would've noticed that this happened to people who took the 2003 US History test have had warning that their scores would be canceled unless proven that we were not the people posting on the message board. well, i sent a 2-page letter stating the faults of the college board being completely truthful, and they thanked me back with a terse cancellation. my guidance counselor has also been notified, and i believe i've been talked about by teachers because today during an ap test the proctor was like (yep, i've heard of it happening! (the cancellations, that is...ha, only me :/).

The only thing I did wrong was sign up to CC with my full name and e-mail address involving my unique birthyear. Tri, your name looks pretty unique to me. That could be it along with past posts revealing your location.

There's really nothing you can do. Idk, I considered the lying approach, but it seems odd. CB tracks the posts here anyway.

It's real, and I'm a real person. Me and several people panicked about this a few weeks ago. Although Tri may not sound as being genuine at first, I don't think CB would imposter a teenager however sad CB may be.

I should add that is this happened to you as a junior, it is not the end of the world. I know of a girl going to Brown that is deciding not to take ANY AP tests this year. You can take AP classes and not take the test (some schools don't...and if they don't, i'd bet they'd make an exception for you). Also, most people do not send AP scores to colleges. However, it is a sad sad thing that CB is taking our money away to set an example :/

heh, I doubt Tri_N is telling the truth:

1) his post is way too formal to be written by us but then again I doubt collegeboard would make that mistake

2) look how calm he is about it. yes, he's going to college but so what? he would still be devastated considering he lost all that money, time, and gets no college credit. he shows no signs of remorse, excitement, arousal, etc

3) yes, he's right...there is something called an IP address but guess what? only moderators have access to IP dresses. so if collegeconf.com can confirm collegeboard asked for Tri N's IP address, then sure he's telling the truth. unless any user has access to someone's IP? I thought this is in violation of privacy rules of any discussion board rules, though. any ideas?

4) AGAIN, look at his dullness in his post. he doesn't care at all. collegeboard tried to shut down his school? hmmm, you believe this? okay...

5) yea, I suppose it's a chance but most likely someone trying to scare everyone.

anyways, by no means do I consider you should believe my points, but those are the reasons why I wouldn't be too stressed about Tri_guy's post.

i totally agree with bfjava.....this is all waaaay too fake. college board wants to maintain the "integrity" of its exams?? wtf! i have a cousin my age in cali, so if i decide to call her up and tell her the test questions (NOT that i would do that!), is cb gonna be listening to my phone calls? i'm pretty sure thats illegal. theres SO much cheating on aps and sats that this stupid 48 hour rule should probably be the last of their worries, especially becuase theres no possible way they can enforce it everywhere...yea this whole thread doesnt make any sense..

WTF are some of you expecting me to say? Do you want me to say, "OMG, CB is gay. I'm going to lose my AP credits!" There's something that's called maturity and you learn to deal with adversity by being optimistic instead of being pessimistic.

Hey, you can do whatever you want. In fact, you can call your sisters, cousins, and friends across the states after the exam. The point that I'm stressing here is that don't post any AP material on CC or other websites before the 48 hours period. I'm sure that most of you ignore the 48 hours rule and run to your teacher right after the exam.

Finally, you're an idiot if you think you can feel people's emotion through a message. A lot fo people act differently in real life than they do on the net. What's the purpose of whining about the consequences when CB isn't going to change their mind? Instead of whining about my life and its severity, I'm handling the situation with dignity and integrity by telling others not to make the same mistake. Perhaps I'm being too nice. Instead of being nice, maybe I should be a heartless jerk and let CB catch some of you.

and collegeconfidential really DOESN'T need to do the confirming, we do it ourselves. i myself have given enough information to reveal who i am...in any given week probably. saying your rank and county would be a giveaway, and just random things...YOU give yourself away, not them.

and they CAN'T enforce the 48-hr rule everywhere but they're doing a pretty good job of enforcing it where they can.

i think the reason why people resent the 48 hour rule is not because they dont want to follow it. Its the way CB conveys it. They demand absolute obedience from us and intimidate us too much. Some of us hate that. The fact that they threaten us and track us down like this is stupid.

And the reason why some people dont believe TriN is becase:
1. he never proved the situation and exlained how they caught him
And most importantly, Tri_N is the source of some people's anger because many many students hate the CB. When a student student actually ACCEPTS the authority of CB, does nothing about it, and warn people to obey CB, he is doing something that most members here wont do. SO I think this is why.

And once again, its not that people here hate the 48 hour rule, its that people hate the CB and can't stand people defending it and telling people to obey

Hundreds of posters have no problem to follow simple rules. Let's hope that careless posting on CC won't cause additional cancellations of AP tests.

Why has this turned into some sort of forum for attacking Tri_N? WTF!? Whether or not Tri_N is a student or some top secret undercover secret spy-agent working for CB intellegence, (sarcasim), i think its wrong for everybody to attack like this. The message is real, s*it happens, people cheat or say things they shouldnt and get in huge trouble for it. The warning is real, and if you read the Calc thread in which Tri_N was warned repeatedly by Moderater Trinity, i think you will see that Tri_N is for real beacause whatever he said was a violation of the CB rules and was edited. DO you think the CB would go so far to catch students breaking their rules as to violate them? That doesnt make anysense. People should be more appreciative of the warning they have recieved because we all know that the CB is being much tighter with their security and enforcing punishments more stringently this year. Regardless of whether, like I said, Tri_N is a student in some deep shtroubleit or whether he is an undercover secret agent for the CB, he was posting merely to warn people of the consequences of CB rules violations. It doesnt matter what his motives are, punishment still sucks.

I hope that my post will be the last to this thread. I hope that everyone is noticing this warning. Just for clarification, my principal exaggerated the situation for me when he said that ETS threatened to close down the school. Technically, they cannot close down another private institute because this will break all antitrust federal laws. However, ETS can forbid a school from administering any AP exam for a brief period of time. I'm sorry for the confusion. I hope that this will erase any doubt you have for me. Hey, guys, it's Friday. Just wait for one more day!
