I was surprised that when my son received his scores in the mail yesterday (from the 1/25/03 SAT I) that the score report says most people who re-take the SAT actually drop a few points. That doesn't make sense to me. And I'm curious, when do most students take their final SATI? Junior year or senior year? With many colleges doing ED, I thought he should have his last SAT sometime before senior year, but is he then competing against older students (seniors) who have had longer to mature and prepare?

Was the score report referring to the students who get a high score and retake it? Because if your son got an 800 verbal, it woulld say that 80% of people who retake it do worse, which is kind of what one would expect. Overall, people do better if they retake it.

No, he didn't get 800 on either section. Yeah, with an 800 that would make sense that the score might drop (it sure can't go up!). He did get 700+ on both sections, so there's room for improvement, but I was surprised that at that level, over 50% of re-takers do worse.
