i live in nj (northeast states) and its more common to take the SATS than ACTS up here. however - from my first SATS i did worse than expected (1100-region =X) and from practice problems ive done on ACTS, i think id do a lot better (30+). should i take them or will it be looked down upon since majority take SATS here.
and can someone explain to me how they are scored, because i don't understand how they score these.

It doesn't matter where you live, it matters where you want to apply. Some areas prefer the SAT and others prefer the ACT, but I've also read that many schools weight them equally.
There should be some articles on www.collegeboard.com, www.act.org, or www.review.com that talk about this topic and about how they're scored.
