does anyone know this year's cutoff for commended?

I think i depends on the state. In highly competitive states like Connecticut and New York its around 200 but it might be less for other states. I got a 205 and I got a letter friday so it can't be higher than that.

The Commended index is national, some where around 200-201 while semi-finalist and up are set by state.

Yeah...i got a 200 (96th%) ...i didn't get a letter (althought i have an absent-minded guidance counselor)...i was hoping for commended, but it doesnt look like that is going to happen. I guess it was 201 this year. Oh well.

In reality, does commended actually look good on apps? I thought only semi-final and finalists were of importance. how good is commended, really?

commended is probably of little value a first tier schools.....however it will get you full tuition or partial tuition at some tier two and three schools....for example http://www.wright.edu/admissions/dollars/scholar.html
