For me, that math score sucks. I usually get around 750's. :(

By Tree (Tree) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 05:17 pm: Edit

Lauren, I would take your 770 V over my 780 M anyday since I usual get 800's in math... I wish I was better at verbal. Oh well, I guess it's just an asian thing. :( *sigh*

By Laurenh87 (Laurenh87) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 05:21 pm: Edit

Ahh well thanks. I'm just so mad about the 690! You and I should take a combined test- I'll do the verbal and you can take care of the math, ok?

Math--700
Verbal--780

Darn that baka stupid math section! I thought that I had aced it! Anyway, what are you guys like? Are you all mostly Asians as well? And congrats, tsunashima, on your perfect score! That's really hard to come by! Any tips? (And also, are you Japanese, or are you just an anime fan?

Well, this site seems to be pretty cool, but message boards are very addictive! lol, I have a friend that can attest to that! But...is there anyone else here who feels as bad as me about their test score? Are any of you all going to take the SAT again?

By Tsunashima1 (Tsunashima1) on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 10:42 am: Edit

Hi Gfefe,

You have a stellar verbal score, and if you retake it you'll have a great shot at getting perfect verbal.

You can remedy your math if you just do more and more practice problems. You'll learn to work faster and therefore end up with enough time to complete hard problems and to check thoroughly for careless mistakes.

And yes, I came from Japan when I was seven. Hajimemashite!

By Foreigngirl (Foreigngirl) on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 11:18 am: Edit

Hey all you guys....how long and how did you prepare for the SAT? I will take it in May for the first time, I'm international.

By Gfefe (Gfefe) on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 11:47 am: Edit

Arigatou-gozaimasu for the tips, Tsunashima! Hajimemashite, douzo yoroshiku! The weird thing is that, when I took the junior PSAT in october, I got everything right (80-M, 80-V, 80-Writing)...and now, the scores are slipping. I've been working hard, but maybe I was overconfident when I took the SAT. Darn, now I'll have to take it again in June! Anyway, it was nice meeting you!

V 800

By Tsunashima1 (Tsunashima1) on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 12:55 pm: Edit

Douitashimashite. Nice meeting you too!

Congrats on your PSAT! That will definitely look impressive to colleges.

I think getting a great score has a good amount of luck involved, so I wouldn't be disappointed with your score. Often the cause of low scores is simply careless mistakes, which can be eliminated through practice.

The PSAT seems to provide only a rough estimate. I had a 228 PSAT score (80M, 79V, 69 W), but I didn't lose any points on the SAT I or SAT II Writing. The disparity is probably due to the different timing conditions and the number of questions. But if you got a 240 that means you definitely have the potential to score perfect on the SAT I and II's. Just keep trying and you'll do better.

Ganbattene!

"Ota: dude, if you measure your intelligence by the SATs then some idiotic people are "smart" and some geniuses are idiots. SAT doesn't measure jack ••••"

Crypto86,

I registered for the Math 2C by mail, and then I created a CB account. I could then see my Math score online. All he has to do is enter the registration number (that's on his admission ticket) into the CB registration form. If he's already created the account without entering that number, I guess either he can modify that account or create a new one.

Konnichiwa, Tsunashima (is it -kun or -chan?)! You know, I took 3 of the 10 Real SATs (from the book) this weekend and I only got 1 math question wrong on each! (My dad took away my calculator since he thought that I was using it way too often! The weird thing is that I'm doing better without it!) Did you take the SATs without using a calculator? (I think that next time, in June, I'm definitely NOT going to use it!)

Also, I read in a book that students are allowed to use scratch paper, but it it true? (I didn't see anyone using scratch paper when I did the SAT.) Oh yeah, thanks for wishing me good luck! Next time, I'll definitely (zettai! zettai!) strive for that 1600 score! I looked at that screenshot of your scores! Hontou sugoi ne! (By the way, how do you take screenshots anyway?)

Well, I gotta go do homework, but I hope you can reply back! (It's fun talking partly in Japanese!)

Do they ever...make mistakes? Is it possible that when I get my mailed report they'll be like BAM YOU SUCK 400? And that my online report was incorrect?

By Ohlookasquirrel (Ohlookasquirrel) on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 - 06:40 pm: Edit

Also, I think someone asked, I was curious as well, apparently the college board scales the SAT such that NO MORE THAN seven out of ten thousand students gets a perfect score.

So, usually, there will be between 500 and 600 students each year who get it (and that's including multiple tries and overeager parents who coughed it up for private tutors with heavy price tags), though last year as 1.4 million students took it, the number was in the 800's.

So, not many, is the answer. Get out your calculator, that's 0.064%.

Hey Gfefe! I'm a -kun. How about you?

I did all the practice tests without using a calculator, but I used a TI-89 on test day to avoid calculation errors. If you're doing better without the calculator, then by all means leave it at home! But I believe sometimes it helps you solve the problem much faster, esp. ones involving quite a bit of arithmetic.

I don't think scratch paper is permitted. Collegeboard seems to always say that you can do scratchwork in the test booklet but never mentions anything about allowing it.

There's a print screen key usually immediately to the right of the F12 key. When you press it the screenshot is saved to the Clipboard, so that you can then open up Paint and hit Ctrl+V to paste it.

By Ohlookasquirrel (Ohlookasquirrel) on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 - 12:44 am: Edit

Oh god use your calculator people.

You can do all the stupid plugging in stuff and checking your answers so much faster by just putting equations and using the table-ask? feature.

Not to mention all this other neato stuff you learn in calc and other classes on your calculator that pretty much solves all those problems for you.

It saves SO much time.

I agree with squirrel... There's no way I could have gotten my 1600 without my calculator. I work pretty quickly through the math sections, so I usually go through once, using the calculator rarely, then go through again and check my answers using JUST the calculator (often plugging my answer choice back into the problem, or something like that). Usually I find 2 or so arithmetic errors.

I also agree. In addition to the basic four functions that are useful for checking arithmetic, the solver feature of the TI-83/89 comes in really handy sometimes too.

i dont know how the solver feature works, can u tell me? and with what kinds of equations can u work it with.

Thanks in advance

By Tsunashima1 (Tsunashima1) on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 - 03:25 pm: Edit

For an 83, hit Math and then 0. Hit the up arrow key, and then enter the equation with 0 on one side. Then press enter and then Green button+enter.

For an 89, hit F2 enter and then type inside parentheses (equation, variable).

So for example, if you type 0=5x+10 the solver will yield -2.

how do you use the table-ask? on the TI-83?

By Ohlookasquirrel (Ohlookasquirrel) on Thursday, April 15, 2004 - 12:47 am: Edit

Ok, the table ask? is my savior, saveur, sole light in a dreary life, etc.

Step by step:
1. Turn on your calculator
2. Press the 2nd button, then the "Window" button, to access the "tblset" feature.
3. Where it says "Indpnt", it will probably be set on "Auto", move your cursor over and select "Ask". This basically means that now you can ask the independent variable (x) for your tables.
4. To see it in action, put an equation into your Y=, then hit 2nd "Graph" to access the "Table feature". You can now hit a number to put in for "x", and where in the Y column, it will give you your answer, or what would happen if you plugged that number into x in your equation.

This is a real timesaver with messy equations.

Other cool features:

For infinite series, you can go under 2nd-List (the stat button)-math and select sum, then 2nd-List-ops and select seq.

This will then give you the sum of a sequence. Plug your sequence in like this, for example if I wanted to find the sum of the sequence 1/3^x from one to infinity, I would plug in:

sum(seq(1/3^x, x, 1, 200)

The calculator can't go up to infinity technically, you need an 89 for that I believe, so if you try from one to varying large numbers it will give you an estimate. For example, with this problem, your calc should yield 0.5.

Ohayou-gozaimasu, Tsunashima-kun! (yay! I guessed right! I had a feeling that you would be a guy, hehe.) (It's morning! Well...12:48 AM over here, that is!) Anyway, as you can see from my over-hyperness (well...can you blame me? I'm going on a choir trip to New Orleans tomorrow!), I'm a girl. Some of my friends call me Chiharu-chan, but that's only my Japanese anime nickname. Do you like anime as well? (I love reading manga and watching anime!)

Anyway, thanks for the tips! (It's too bad that collegeboard won't let people use regular scratch paper! The space in the quantitative comparison section is way too small to do any work!)

Thanks so much for the screenshot tip! I never noticed that key before! Well, I really ought to be studying for my Precal test tomorrow (and it's already morning...darn), so I'll talk to you later! Oh, but by the way, do you have any Asian friends (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, etc.) in your school? I haven't met any Japanese students in my school, although there are plenty of anime fans!

Wow, there's so many perfect scorers on this website! *sigh* I'll have to do my best next time! I have a feeling that one of the reasons I got a low score was that, after I realized that I had bubbled in a question wrong just as the sponsor called "time," I couldn't get that question out of my head! Since that question was at the end of Section 3 (Math), I was thinking about it for the rest of the test and didn't concentrate as much as I should have.... Oops...big mistake...

Nice Calculator Tricks!
But, can you guys tell me when its usefull?
I can't seem to figure when to use it in the QC part of math.
Give some examples of hard SAT questions u easily solved using this technique.

By Crypto86 (Crypto86) on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 03:37 pm: Edit

Just got my SAT hardcopy in the mail (early i think?) Math raw score was 55 for 730 - by 10 REAL scaled scores that means it was a nicer curve for the math. For verbal, had a 52 raw score for 590...

For CR, I only had 25 right, 10 wrong!!!! 5 omits = 23/40 raw score.... 55th percentile... ouch.... Bigtime held needed there (Had 16/19 and 13/19 for Analogies and SC, respectively - for 95 and 85 percentile). Any suggestions on good CR books and other tips. I hear Up Your Score is really good for CR. Thanks.

so verbal prob. went: 800,800,800,800,780,760..
math went..800,800,780?

i'm actually an anime fan... but only for "furi kuri" (FLCL). other animes can be sorta sappy. NGE has some merit, though =\
