Anyone have info? In new england they're having it on April 15. Know how many students take in nationally? How many get called back?
By Avatar56 (Avatar56) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 01:19 pm: Edit
I'm taking it on April 18th.
Approximately 900 students take the National Exam, and 20 get called back to join the study camp.
Pretty good odds, no?

Hey finally! Other chem people!
Yeah, I got chosen in MD. Taking it April 16th.
Does anyone know if it is just MD, or is it MD/VA/DC? Looks to me like the latter, but Im not sure.
Hmm... top 2% go to the study camp...eek.

Allencheng and I are taking it the 17th in CA.

I'll bet it's some hearty competition, but quite an honor if one gets called back. Are all of you in AP Chem or further in your Chem studies? to be honest, it seems improbable that i'm one of the top 900 in the nation. i got 710 on sat2 last year(after chem 1). whadyall get? y'all brilliant?
By the way, is Chem your best subject? Most interesting? I HATE Ka Kb pH SOLUTIONS NaOH HF.

Heh, I love equilibrium, acids/bases, and titrations. =)
By Frozentears801 (Frozentears801) on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 08:11 pm: Edit
Yes, I must say it's my best subject, and most interesting. I love thermodynamics and kinetics, okay at equilibrium. Can't stand buffer solutions.

Cutoff here was a 52 on the local exam for Nat Chemistry Olympiad. Taking it on the 17th here in IL. I like chemical kinetics and spontanaiety =). Hate acid/base and redox!

How is everyone studying?
Any USNCO vetrans, please share any hints on how to prep!

Did yall get 800 SAT2?
By Kewlkiwi102 (Kewlkiwi102) on Monday, April 05, 2004 - 11:08 pm: Edit
Taking it May 1, expecting somewhere about there.
btw, hows the curve on that SATII?
By Qwert271 (Qwert271) on Wednesday, April 07, 2004 - 03:02 pm: Edit
I think about 6 WRONG is the cutoff for 800. After that it goes about 6 or 7 points off per raw point off. That is, 790, 790, 780, 770, 770, 760, 750, 750 or so.

I got selected for the national chem olympiad...I was in the top 12 of Massachusetts and CT and I win money! But I can't take the test because it's scheduled during my april vacation, in which I'm going somewhere else

Top 12 on the local test?
By Kewlkiwi102 (Kewlkiwi102) on Wednesday, April 07, 2004 - 05:33 pm: Edit
Hey wait a sec, why dont we get any $$ for being in the olympiad? (I'm in MD)

That's the national test.... what test did you take to get in the top 12?
By Kewlkiwi102 (Kewlkiwi102) on Wednesday, April 07, 2004 - 06:16 pm: Edit
Hmm...some regions have local tests (60 min MC) to qualify for nationals.
Others have nomination letters by teachers.
Some use a combo of both.
Im still intrigued by this money buisness though...
By Encomium (Encomium) on Wednesday, April 07, 2004 - 07:27 pm: Edit
No, my local test went as follows
We did the multiple choice 60 question thing...the "local test"
Then they took the top 32 scorers and had them do a lab and 3 problems...then they took the top 12 from both Mass and Conn regions
At least that's how they do it in our district (I'm from CT, and they take the top 12 from CT and MA)
It reminded me of American Idol cause there were like 200 people there to start with, then it got whittled down to top 32...then a top 12...haha
I'm a dork
But my teacher says I win money for being in the top 12...even though I can't take the national

LOL! you all had a tougher time of getting into it! my chem teacher invited me because she thinks i'm bright! everyone takes everything seriously if it can possibly affect his/her college chances! Just being especially politically correct! overuse of exclamation points! By the way, I hope I get some $$$$$$$$$!
By Frozentears801 (Frozentears801) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 05:26 pm: Edit
So what did you get out of the 60 question local? I only got a 55, 6th place in Los Angeles.
By Athlonmj (Athlonmj) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 05:29 pm: Edit
Don't know, we just know that over a 52 was needed to qualify in our section. I think I got a 57.
By Encomium (Encomium) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 05:29 pm: Edit
Hm...I don't know why you'd say "only got" cause that certainly doesn't merit saying "only"
And they haven't given me the results-actualy scores yet...my teacher says he hasn't received them in the mail but will soon
By Dryitchyscalp (Dryitchyscalp) on Thursday, April 08, 2004 - 07:17 pm: Edit
ha, "only" a 55 or 57. i "only" got a 36, which is not too terrible for my standards.

any ideas on how to prep for nationals?
By Ali_Liu (Ali_Liu) on Friday, April 09, 2004 - 11:38 pm: Edit
bump?
By Frozentears801 (Frozentears801) on Saturday, April 10, 2004 - 02:20 am: Edit
"Only" was referring to my score's being too low to even be in the top 5 in my county, let alone top 12 in the state.
By Louman226 (Louman226) on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 - 07:20 pm: Edit
we know that 900 take the national test.. about how many took the local exam?
By Frozentears801 (Frozentears801) on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 12:42 pm: Edit
I think on the site it says we're already the top 3% who took it. Figure the total number from that...
Out of curiosity, what does it take to get an "honors" in the national exam?
By Athlonmj (Athlonmj) on Friday, April 16, 2004 - 06:43 pm: Edit
Bump, I'm also curious as to what Frozentears asked.
