Discus: SAT/ACT Tests and Test Preparation: March 2004 Archive: AP US History + Princeton Review
By Mtstudent (Mtstudent) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 12:57 pm: Edit

Our school does not offer AP Us History so I am taking it on my own. Basically, I just purchased the Princeton Review for History and read through it.
I took the practice exam today (mult choice) and got a 4. That seems to easy. I haven't even taken the AP course and I received a 4?
My question is this: Are the PR practice tests similar to the actual ones? So many of the questions I felt refferred to specifics in the review, as if the they went back through the review and wrote questions based on the information in the book.

Any advice would be great.
Thanks.

I thought the PR book was a big help for the AP test... but then again, I also read my text book.

I'd see if you could find a copy of a US book (maybe at the library?). We used the American Pageant, which I really liked (although it is kind of verbose).

I wouldn't be surprised if you could pull of a 3/4 by only reading the AP book, but you might get in trouble in the areas where PR is weak, or with the essays.

Try REA's practice tests. The book is praised by many, and the tests are harder than the actual AP. If you do well on those, you should be in good shape.

I'd suggest reading through a textbook, too. American Pageant, American History: A Survey, American Spirit are all good ones.

Thanks for the help. I'm aiming for a 5, so I'm going to review quite a bit over the next few weeks.

Another endorsement for Kennedy American Pageant...
Avoid Boyer's Enduring Vision--too much nonessential stuff you don't have time to read...

Haha, in my APUS class last year we read both American Pageant and Enduring Vision. Yeah, EV is boring is crap, so we never ended up reading that.

Yeah our textbook is supposed to be EV, but nobody reads it. Literally. It's just that boring. Everyone just takes notes on the lectures.

PR is ok for a cursory review but they give a shallow paragraph on many very complex issues that quite possibly will be tested through essays. So its good for just refreshing your memory and it won't hurt you, but if you want something comprehensive you should probably look at Barron's, which is very very good, and REA.
