I took the January SAT and while I did pretty well on my verbal, I did pretty awful on the math section. Is getting an SAT tutor really that helpful, or should I just work harder on my own?

that depends - if you know how to do the problems but run out of time, a tutor won't help you as much as practice. If you have no idea how to do a significant chunk of the problems and cannot figure out from the solutions where you are going wrong, a tutor might be helpful.

Agreed. Are you having trouble with math itself or timing? Do some more studying on your own to pinpoint the weaknesses, and if you can't master them on your own, a tutor would be a great idea. I would get an SAT tutor, though, not just a math tutor.
