specifically, i've heard that some schools look at your a) highest verbal, and your highest math...
is this true? (or b) do they just look at your higheest total score?
how do you know which schools look at the sat which way (either a or b) ?

Mostly all claim to consider your highest verbal and highest math (what they really do...). Personally, I wouldn't trip if I had my highest scores in one area at different test administrations. If you are very concerned though about individual schools you may want to inquire about the school's particular policy.

the reason for my inquiry is that i got a
720 verbal and a 640 math on the october sat.
720 is really high (in my opinion) while a 640 is really low...
(i expect to get an 800m by the time i graduate)
