Yup... It's kind of weird, since I took the October 11 SAT, I'm taking the PSAT after I've taken the SAT... XD

Yeah, I'm taking it too (I'm a junior). How did you guys study for the psat? I read two psat review books and took a bunch of practice tests. Good luck all!

By Volleygenius (Volleygenius) on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 12:49 pm: Edit

By Curiousstudent (Curiousstudent) on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 12:57 pm: Edit
how are you guys preparing? Which books do you use?
By Volleygenius (Volleygenius) on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 01:11 pm: Edit
i used the underground guide to the SAT. it was pretty cheap and gave the main strategies, plus it gives around 200 vocab words that commonly show up

I need to get my writing score up on my PSAT... I got 213 total last year, with a 67 writing, but I live in NJ and the cut-off is usually around 220 for National Merit. I may be able to pick a few points up on math and verbal, but I'd feel safer if I could improve on writing. Any tips on how to study for that section?

Any seniors here taking the PSAT?
By Aravis (Aravis) on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 03:30 pm: Edit
I'm a soph taking the PSAT this year as well. My school district makes everyone take it... including the freshmen. So this is my second time taking it. I'm hoping for at least a 1300 this time. Last time I took it I messed up on a lot of stuff 'cause I wasn't used to taking tests in English yet. (took it a month after I transfered to a USA school)
By Justice (Justice) on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 03:30 pm: Edit
Actually, seniors can, but only seniors who are in their 3rd year of high school can have it count toward National Merit.

I'm a junior and i'm taking the PSAT for the second time. I found it harder than the OCT 11 SAT this year.
By Frenchfries (Frenchfries) on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 05:47 pm: Edit
I'm a junior and I'm taking the PSAT for my second time this year. Last year I got a 199, but I'm hoping to get a score high enough to be a semi-finalist this year. Two weeks ago I took the practice test included in the 2003 student bulliten, and I got a 216. Yesterday, I took the practice test included in the 2002 student bulliten since I never took it last year, and got a 226. I'm really nervous about the test and my flucuating scores, especially since NJ's cutoff is so high.

ya...ya...ya, Frenchfries...you know you will be a finalist. If you won't, well....I know it won't happen. Lol. Ya, i am taking it. Have to see...want to be above 210, since i am from the "stupid" south Carolina. Ha, ha..ha

By Thedad (Thedad) on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 06:49 pm: Edit
For California, I believe it was 216 this year, 215 last year.

I'm a junior taking it for the third time, and the first time that counts. I remember getting 70v 64m and 70w last year for a total of 204, but I've been studying (I used SAT II writing and SAT I Barron's) for the past few months. Just took practice test in the 2003 bulletin, and I got 80v 70m 80w, and was amazed at the progress I've made. I'm hoping to score high enough for Semi-Finalist. BTW anyone know the cutoff for Oregon?
By Ilovemath (Ilovemath) on Monday, October 13, 2003 - 10:40 pm: Edit
I thought the test in the bulletin was unusually easy this year... I got 233 (80V,78M,75W), but I only got 213 on the regular PSAT last year (74V,72M,67W), and in the 10 Real SATs I rarely score above 750 in a section. I hope the PSAT is equally easy, but I doubt it will be.

Can u find old PSATs somewhere?
By Joel_Set (Joel_Set) on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 - 07:37 am: Edit
i love math what do you usually score on the 10 reals?
By Ilovemath (Ilovemath) on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 - 03:29 pm: Edit
eh... usually from 700-750 in each section. Stronger section and score depends on the day and the difficulty of the test. I've taken like 5 of them, and I've gotten 800's in each section 1 time, but other than that I've only gotten above 750 in a section 1 time (math, 780).
By Encomium (Encomium) on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 - 05:57 pm: Edit
I just took the practice test in the bulletin
i got 75 V, 80 M, 78 @
How do I repeat my performance?
By Encomium (Encomium) on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 - 06:04 pm: Edit
By the way, this is the highest practice test I've ever gotten
75 V, 80 M, 78 W = 233
Last Year:
69 V, 72 M, 53 W = 194
(Grammar Smart and Kaplan SAT II Writing for W)
I also got myself tutored
I'm psyched, that's 39 points
