hello, anyone out there take the SAT I back in the day as a 7th grader for the John Hopkins talent search thingy? what kind of scores did you guys get? i got 1040. i'd be interested to know what you got then and any recent SAT I scores. i remember sitting through this grueling test and hoping to pass out so i wouldn't have to take it anymore.

By BM on Monday, December 09, 2002 - 11:38 pm: Edit

Relax. I got 1090 7th grade, 1260 8th grade, 1300 PSAT 9th grade, 1420 PSAT 10th grade... and I'm anxiously awaiting 11th grade scores.

lol, I got a 1000 in 7th grade. My math was pretty good but my verbal was awful. (430v, 570m)

By Mom on Tuesday, December 10, 2002 - 09:02 am: Edit

My son got a 950 in 7th grade, as did several of his friends. He ended up w/ an easy 1420, and his friends ended up 1400 - 1500+. So 1040 is a great start.

Julian Stanley, the founder of CTY, told me about three years ago that the average score gain is 150 points each, from 7th grade to end of 11th.

Interestingly, research by the college board also found that time alone, about 1/2 year, led to a 21-22 point rise in SAT score, or about 45 points per year. This is also why Kaplan/Princeton can guarantee a score rise - besides, if your's doesn't, you don't get your money back, just another chance to sit through the course.

By Joe Peanuts on Tuesday, December 10, 2002 - 09:18 pm: Edit

but im pretty sure if u take one of them prep courses, you take an SAT at the beginning of the course, then they guarantee some type of increase on THAT score.

This discussion is really helping me figure out what high school might be a good fit for our daughter. I'd appreciate your opinions on whether she could handle a school that has such bright kids that the average SAT's are 720 and 710. Her 7th grade SAT's with CTY totalled 1110. Is it possible she'd likely be competititve with kids earning 1430's by the time she's a senior? I was concerned she might be in over her head. Please send more score increase data! Thanks - a concerned mom.

See my post, above. Your daughter received an excellent score. Relax.

By . on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 - 08:10 pm: Edit

yes she wll be fine even at the most competetive schools. but remember sat scores (especially 7th grade ones) don't define the student. if she is a hard working and relentless student, then im sure she can handle any school.

Wow, I'm so glad I found this place. I feel anxious about my scores and I hope I get them back tomorrow. Watch them give it back Monday or Friday.

7th grade, 970, 8th grade 1040 (60? probably not...it was just the requirement for my age to get into CTY), 9th grade PSATs starting here 1200, PSATs 10th grade 1300. So according to this, I increase 100 every year. I probably won't increase by 100 considering what I "learned," because in 9th grade, i was going on a few months of geometry experience. So I had everything I needed to learn by 10th grade. Hopefully I'll just do really well on writing.

By Christine on Friday, December 13, 2002 - 12:52 am: Edit

BTW, I should mention I took the same KAPLAN course twice. Summer of 9th grade and 10th grade, although, admittedly, I did no homework. The ones with 1000 and 1100 scores in the 7th grade should not be worried at all. Just make your kids study a little bit of SAT technique, and they'll be all set to get on their ways to 1400s and 1500s.

Also, if you have your 11th grade score already, please post that along with your earlier scores even if you've already posted...
AHHH *tears my hair out*

Here's my chart:

1030 SAT 7th grade (540 V; 490 M)
1120 SAT 8th grade (580 V; 540 M)
1260 PSAT 10th grade (630 V; 630 M)
1460 SAT 11th grade (770 V; 690 M)
1530 PSAT 11th grade (800 V; 730 M)

I took a 12-hour weekend SAT course one month prior to taking the PSAT in October, and I took the SAT on Nov. 2. I'm a little disappointed that my SAT score wasn't as high as my PSAT score, but I'll retake the SAT in the spring to try to raise my math past 700.

And it looks like I'll have to wait until after Christmas to get my PSAT scores.

omg david wtf? 770m in 7th grade? Did you take calculus in 8th grade or something?

By David N on Thursday, December 19, 2002 - 11:46 pm: Edit

Actually, I took Algebra 1 in 7th grade, then 8th my math teacher decided to put take me out of geometry and put me in precalculus. I still think that was crazy, but I guess it worked.

Anyway, I think this is starting to get off topic... Let's just say I'm good at math and leave it at that.

the calculus material had nothing to do with it... it's just very unusual for someone in algebra1 to make 770, that's all

(even though the test only covers through algebra2, the pre-calc and calc help reinforce your math foundation)

By debbie on Saturday, December 21, 2002 - 12:28 pm: Edit

My daughter didn't study at all and isn't brilliant and got state honors in verbal and math with combined score of 1160. If I were you, I'd limit the studying to doing a quick review of the math section if you're not a math type. Otherwise, I'd skip it. Maybe spend a little time getting familiar with the verbal analogy type questions. And remember, no penalty for guessing. Good luck. - Debbie

I toom my SATs recently for the first time (I am an 11th grader) and I got an 800M 740V, I was only trying for 800 math, should I go again and focus on verbal to go for 780-800 there? I haven't taken any prep courses either besides the PSATS that I never completed because I didn't want to try. Should I try preparation? And if so, should I bother to try on math, 800 is so easy but I would rather rest my hand than fill bubbles. Maybe taking them for a second time will help in general as well. Any comments by email would be nice.

Achhh! You poor confused children! What do you think your 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th etc.. grade SAT scores reflect?? Your developing personal integrity, compassion, creativity, or human potential? Congratulations, you have all discovered that lots of money, years of parental cattle-prodding, and intensive SAT prep will bring you the numbers that, by golly, you DESERVE. Again, congratulations. Your lives are now meaningful. Nevermind that the world is full of starving and oppressed peoples. You silly fools won't have to worry about a thing anymore (except perhaps the color of your future gas-guzzlin' college mobile -->powder blue of course~) All you sillies that are aching for recognition of your highscorin' shiznat would benefit greatly from a nice trip to Tiffany's. By momof2 on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 - 10:43 am: Edit

My advice as a mom is NOT to do much formal study per se. You do want to make sure he will be familiar with the form of the test - sections, length, whether or not to guess. You might buy one of the review books or computer reviews, but I would go over them as a parent and then share with the child. My older child, a NM Finalist, would tell you that 4 high school years of practicing and worrying over these kind of tests is PLENTY! I think there is a real burn-out factor at work after awhile.

Most boys this age are pretty good on math skills - a little basic geometry review might be in order, but I wouldn't stress over it. Best advice is to make sure he reads, READS challenging material. If he's up to it, I've always thought Tolkien was great for test preparation - and quite timely right now. The language and intricate sentence construction isn't really duplicated in most modern fiction - only on the SAT, ACT, etc! Tell your son to relax and have fun - tell him you'll take him out for his favorite meal and dessert after the test. If he starts out with a good experience, he should have a good test-taking attitude in future years. Good luck to you both.

My seventh-grade daughter took the midwest talent search sat Jan. 25. She scored 690v and 640m on the practice test sent to us by ETS. Do kids this age tend to score higher or lower than their practice tests? Also, what happens if you do score well? My impression is that even with near-perfect scores in highscool, very selective universities are usually a long shot unless you're great at a sport or instrument or something. I'm beginning to wonder what the point is of encouraging my kids to push themselves hard. They'll probably end up at public universities that will accept B GPAs and mediocre SATs anyway. Getting a little cyncial . . .

Most younger kids score a good bit better on the practice tests than the real thing, but...her practice scores are great!! I'm sure she did well on 1/25. We did the Duke talent search - and a score over 500 on one of the sections earned state recognition. Those students were invited to a ceremony at a university and got a nice certificate. We rec'd a brochure on several summer camps our child was eligible to attend - pretty $$! We also rec'd mailings for the next 5 or so years. I believe the national recognition cutoff was 600 on either section, but I'm not as sure of that. One of my children missed it by 20 pts., that's all I remember. The nat'l kids have several other opportunities. I really wouldn't worry about it too much at this time. As I said before, kids will worry enough about their scores when they reach HS. Tell her to read a lot and have an interesting and fun life!

Momof2,

You're very nice to respond to my query. I appreciate the good balanced advice. Sounds like your kids have a good mom to help them!

By momof2 on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 11:29 am: Edit

Like most people, I tend to learn best from my own mistakes. I try to heed my late mother's advice to me (repeatedly :) ) as a child: "Yes, it's good to be very smart, but it's much more important to be very good." And one more: "Always do what you can."
One wise lady.

By Northstarmom (Northstarmom) on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 11:36 am: Edit

My thoughts are that the best prep is to tell your child that it's great that he's courageous enough to take a test designed for h.s. students. Have him get a good night sleep, and send him off with a cheery, "Whatever you do will be fine because this test really doesn't count for anything anyway. It's just practice for when you are in h.s."

After the test, celebrate his courage by taking him out for ice cream or pizza.

If your child wants to be familiar with the test, you could direct him to the booklet he will get when he signs up for it. You also could get him an SAT review book.

The test really is not a big deal. Even if he doesn't make the cut off for your regional talent search, he'll still get mailings from many summer academic programs that he would qualify for just because he's smart.

And if he doesn't want to go to a summer academic program, that's fine, too. There are plenty of ways to have enjoyable, fulfilling summers.

Meanwhile, it can be a good idea to start looking at books about the college application process so you can prepare your child and yourself. Until about 2012, each year will be becoming more competitive when it comes to applying.

For that reason, parents should realize that schools that were considered safeties when we were young now are very tough to get into. Thus, avoid giving your child unrealistic expectations of themselves -- no matter how stellar their 7th grade SAT scores are. And do help a child not view test scores or elite college acceptance as the yardsticks for determining what kind of person they are.

By momwithquestions on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 02:04 pm: Edit

Northstarmom,

My sense already is that the Harvards and Princetons will be out of reach, even assuming my kids' test scores and grades are great. They just aren't huge athletes, musicians or leaders and it seems as if it takes a "hook" besides academic excellence to make it into the top schools. I know parents who are pushing their kids very hard at sports, etc. beyond, in my opinion what their kids want. My heart just isn't into that. I like to sit around with my kids, sometimes for whole weekends, just being together and relaxing from the week. So it looks like second-tier, or maybe even third-tier, for us. Life is long and maybe by avoiding burn-out at this stage, they'll have the intellectual and creative reserves left to distinguish themselves in adulthood, even with out an Ivy pedigree.

Momwithquestions,
I agree with your philosophy of enjoying your kids. My thoughts in raising my kids were to try to help them become the best versions of themselves that they could be. That meant that I tried to help them identify what made them special, and I tried to help them pursue their interests and talents, whatever they were.

In terms of what they did after h.s., I have been interested in their finding options that best meet tbeir needs. I have, though, never assumed that the Ivies or similar colleges -- or even college at all -- would necessarily be the best options for them, even though both are very smart.

As for distinguishing themselves in adulthood, what I hope is that they have good character and do some kind of work or service to help make the world a better place in some small or large kind of way.

Other than that, whatever they do will make happy. It's not the quality of college that makes a person a good person; it's the quality of their character.

Just got our son's midwest talent search SAT scores back from Jan.25. He's a seventh grader, 12 years old. Got 620v, 590m. What do you think? Any future for this kid????

By JPNJ on Friday, February 07, 2003 - 08:04 pm: Edit

Jeez... a post full of insanely smart people. Well I might as well post my scores up too.

7th SAT: 840 (verbal 410, math 430)
8th SAT: 940 (verbal 440, math 500)
9th: Didn't take anything
10th PSAT: 1220 (verbal 590, math 610)
11th PSAT: 1340 (verbal 610, math 730)
11th SAT: 1450 (verbal 660, math 790)

Took me a lot of work to get up there, and I'm still taking another test in April. Wish me luck.

By iMO on Friday, February 07, 2003 - 08:17 pm: Edit

JPNJ - Wow! Thats a 610 point improvement!
dado - 1210 is fantastic for a seventh grader. I would expect at least 1400 plus by the time he's a senior.

I just got my eighth grade SAT scores~ 1300 (670v, 630m) Do you think I can reach 1500 by the time I am a senior?

By Avatar56 (Avatar56) on Saturday, February 08, 2003 - 06:34 pm: Edit

lets see...
1210 at 7th grade, 1360(680/680) at 8th.. havent taken it since but will take it again now in 10th and psat for 11th.
what is a possible score range for this?

By lowfruit on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 - 09:09 pm: Edit

avatar,

i got 1210 in seventh this year and will be thrilled if I can get 1360 in eighth. did you prep?

By Avatar56 (Avatar56) on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 - 07:41 pm: Edit

lowfruit, i didn't spend any time preparing for the exam. you might want to do so, but its only 8th grade, so dont overdo it. i would recommend some preparation - i missed out on state honors by not getting 700 in either, and i was disappointed because of this - i should have prepared a bit. otherwise, just review, be calm, and don't get intimidated. good luck!

By lowfruit on Thursday, February 13, 2003 - 08:10 am: Edit

Avatar,

personally, I think the even score you got in both categories (verbal and math) is optimal. you're not lopsided and should have a good shot at bringing both up equally and getting into the 1500+ range. I think the honors for one really high score vs. a really high total is stupid. I won't prep a lot but do kind of enjoy the SAT game. at least the test is more challenging than school.

I'm in 7th grade now. I got a 720 on the Math and 610 on the Verbal (1330). What I want to know is do I get anything for getting above a 700? Someone told me that you get an award or something from Johns Hopkins...anyone know?

Thanks.

My 12 year old daughter just got her 7th grade scores back:
V (470) M(430)
She said she didn't do well, and omitted quite a few questions, but...I am happy we are starting the testing game, because by the time she reaches 11th grade her score should be up there with some of the best. We didn't prep, because I found the courses offered too expensive.

Unicycler:

You did well!

My son, 11 yrs old and 7th grade, is in the similar situation. He took SAT through CTY on Jan.25. (1380: 670V, 710M).

I assume that you are under 13. Please check:

ahhhh

i got a 980 in 7th grade but didn't study at all :-(

I am now a sophomore and havn't taken a single SAT II and didn't take PSATs.... i would really like a 1500 next year... do you think it's possible....any advice???

By Silentopen (Silentopen) on Thursday, May 08, 2003 - 08:06 pm: Edit

I didn't take the JH one; I took the Duke TIP version.

Anyway, I think it was the full SAT (took it with HS students).

Fall 7th Grade - 1380
PSAT in Fall 10th Grade - 221
SAT in Spring 10th Grade - 1500

I haven't studied and I took Geometry in 8th grade so I think I was uninformed/a little rusty on the tests. Prep is bunk. Although I think maybe if I study I could get a 1600? I hope so - shooting for MIT (Harvard is cake (rampant grade inflation)).

What do you guys think? 1600 possible? I hope so...
