a certain satellite passed over DC at midnight on Friday. If the satellite completes an orbit every 5 hours, what is the next day that it will pass over DC, at midnight?

LCM(5,24) = 120 hours later. i think. that's 5 days later which'd make it wednesday midnight.

oh oh oh!!...i got another one...

the cost of a drive-in movie is $y per vehicle. A group of friends in a van shared the admission cost by paying $.40 each. If 6 more friends had gone along, everyone would have paid only $.25 each. What is the value of $y?

Regarding the first one and this one, I solved both them but by the stupid way. The first one by drawing a pic of earth and a clock on on one hand and marking the times it would orbit the earth. (hehe...oh boy...the things i do to solve a damn problem) The second, I just plugged in numbers and played around with it for a while. Ergo, i wasted a lot of time in these questions. I have seen a lot of problems like this but i dont even know where to begin with these problems. So, can you guys tell me your mental though process when you see this type of questions.

40x=25(x+6), x=10, 10*(2/5)=$4.

y cents is constant, while the number of people is variable. We call the number of people x. Each pays 40 cents, so 40x=y. When the number of people becomes 6 more, it is x+6, and 25(x+6) is still =y. So, solving, x=10=number of people. Substituting back into 40x=y, y=400 cents=$4.
