Well, i haven't really studied math in 5 years, and took my first practice test today. The test was from 10 real sat. I haven;t really started to study the math portion of the sat yet, so my scores got me a bit down. I scored a 600. I'm planning on taking the dec test. I understood all the questions, but just didnt know some of the basic formulas, such as the formula for slope. I was also honest with myself. If i didn't know the formula let's say for a question, i left it blank. Also didn;t use a calc. I think i just need to practice i guess. Any thoughts?

Why didn't you use a calc???You really should; they're not only helpful, but they're allowed on the test. Plus, some formulas ARE given to you on the SAT, fyi.

calculator isn't that helpful on SAT I math section. i doubt the score would have changed much if s/he did.
you haven't studied math in 5 years? if u r a senior now that'd mean you stopped taking math in 7th grade?

a calc is super helpful. Prevents stupid mistakes and saves a hell of a lot of time.

Parsifal,
A score of 600 on a first test is .... very good. Do not worry about it. Just think how much time you spent reading instructions and identfying the type of questions.
The scores on your first 3 or 4 test is not IMPORTANT at all. What you want to accomplish is identifying the type of questions, recognizing patterns and start learning the few strategies.
I always recommend to take 1 or tests with all material all your disposal, including the answer key. The idea is to get a good handle about the test. If you are next to a computer, remember that they have answers for 99% of the questions at www.studyhall.com.
Keep your chin up
