does anyone know how much longer it will take to get back our psat scores? is there any way to find out sooner by paying money or something, cuz i really want to know. also, do psat scores go on the transcript?

By Smiles on Friday, November 01, 2002 - 09:38 pm: Edit

No, there's no way to find out sooner (unlike SATs, APs, etc)... I think we get scores around Thanksgiving...I too am getting sick of waiting. Good luck!!

By john sherlock on Monday, December 02, 2002 - 07:37 pm: Edit

do you know any of the questions that were on the november 15, 2002 PSAT exam and if so the correct answers to them. I was wondering where i could possibly find a copy of the exam online or some of the questions cause i was wondering if i got them right and how i did on them and the PSAT exam in general. Thanks!

By Hello on Thursday, December 05, 2002 - 08:38 pm: Edit

John, they give you the test manuel with answers when you receive your scores...

By john sherlock on Thursday, December 05, 2002 - 11:11 pm: Edit

i know that but i was wondering where i could find the answers to the questions on the October 15 2002 PSAT exam so that i could figure out how i did before i got my scores. That way i don't have to wait anylonger. I've waited long enough and am getting very anxious. Hello, do you have any ideas? Can anyone help?? Thanks.

By Hello on Friday, December 06, 2002 - 08:00 pm: Edit

You will get the test results back by next week... Only 4 more days... Thety sent the tests out through regular mail on monday.

By john sherlock on Saturday, December 07, 2002 - 01:55 pm: Edit

my school holds our test results and bookelts till after exams which is the 20th of december so i have to wait til then to get my scores. So when someone gets their scores could they be kind enough, maybe hello you could do this for me since you get your stuff back in 4 days, to like scan the test questions or write down some of the test questions and the answers to them so that i can get a good idea of how i did so i dont have to wait anylonger. Preciate that! Thanks!

By stressedout! on Saturday, December 07, 2002 - 03:21 pm: Edit

Maybe I'm stupid or something, but I couldn't understand what they were asking for in the math portion. The way they word their questions...I don't know, I couldn't get them. Anybody have any advices? Tips?

Hmmm, I got my test scores back today, and I got a 1570. Okay, here is one of the hardest questions. Vignette is to scene as cameo is to appearance.
Sorry, can't send the math problems: too messy.

By ace on Monday, December 09, 2002 - 02:41 pm: Edit

I remember that vignette question and I'm pretty sure I got it right, it's fairly easy. What was your composite score abcd?

By hi on Monday, December 09, 2002 - 05:51 pm: Edit

if u didnt know vignette it was hard

By ace on Monday, December 09, 2002 - 05:55 pm: Edit

you didn't even really have to know what vignette was to get it right. I didn't I just used process of elimination and basic logic. To anyone who got their scores back already: was that question a medium or a hard one?

By hi on Monday, December 09, 2002 - 05:59 pm: Edit

i eliminated to two and i got it wrong

are you guys calculating your estimated sat score using the PSAT selection index? it's generally very accurate; I got 80 V, 80 M 74 W last year and my SAT I's and II's scores correlate with the PSAT results.

By the don on Thursday, December 12, 2002 - 06:09 pm: Edit

I live in Dallas, TX and received my PSAT scores today. I got an 80 V, 77 M, and 57 W, giving me an index of 214. Last year, Texas' cutoff was 215 but my college counselor told me that judging by the scores he's seen, that this year's cutoff will be lower, at 213 or 214. Note this is only for Texas so don't get nervous if you're from another state.

I haven't. They probably want to give it back Friday before vaca for me when we're all in the holiday talkative mood. Maybe this Friday since it's a Friday...or even monday. omg, i'm stressed. I get it by school, because that's how they did it last year.

yea so i got a 155 and i actually want to kill myself..i thought i did good..if my sat scores reflect this then I won't get into anywhere..i shouldn't even bother trying to get into good schools :**(

By Christine on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 06:06 pm: Edit

notgoing, all you have to do is take some practice tests and buy a review book, and spend some time in the summer studying it as much as you can until you complete the book. It will raise your score! It won't be too hard. Those really help a lot.

By ben on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 06:31 pm: Edit

I got a 214 (80V, 66M, 68W). I am really surprised that I did so bad in math as I'm the only one in my junior class that's in AP Calc. What will a 214 get me in Pennsylvania?

By so not fair! on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 06:41 pm: Edit

its so unfair! i didnt even get my psat back yet! my school's taking forever!! i think they already have the scores they're just waiting to give them back!

By CuriousOne on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 06:55 pm: Edit

Ben, I'm in Honors Pre Calc (junior) and I have to say that I got the same exact score as I did (67) soph year at the beginning of Honors Alg II. I don't think any of the math you have learned in the past two years is relevant to the math section...which is why we both did so badly, I think. Get an SAT review book from Barron's or REA or something, and the 10 Real SAT's book and study really hard from it...that definitely should bring it up.

214 a few years ago WAS the cutoff for semifinalists in Pennsylvania according to info on this board. So with a little luck you will make it...if not you will be a point or so away from semifinalist, but you will definitely get Commended Scholar designation. :)

Hey, just found this place. i got my scores back today, and I thought i did pretty well, but, according to what ya'll got, i did BAD! I got a 58 verbal, 63 math, and 54 writing...but I'm on a sophomore so.....

By Jon Mango on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 09:55 pm: Edit

Dude you gotta 1210...
Tha an't bad for a sophmore...
most seniors can't make that...

hey i got a 170.....on my psats..i'm a sophmore.....is that around a 1200?
thanks

By College on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 09:26 am: Edit

Listen to me... My score was a 184 sophmore year. I spent some time memorizing word lists, and brought a book by gary gruber for the sat. Now my psat score is a 215!, and my sat practice test scores are coming up around a 1540! To Big foot you can indeed increase your scores...

By Christine on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 05:35 pm: Edit

judith, that is around a 1200 if you scores were spread out evenly. Just tack on a 0 to your verbal and math scores. I get mine TOMORROW! WOW. ONE DAY BEFORE XMAS BREAK.

By ChicagoJen on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 06:09 pm: Edit

I got my scores back and I got a 63 Verbal, a 54 Math, and a 63 Writing Skills. This isn't too bad since im only a sophomore, but do you think there is any way I have a chance of improving enough to be a semi-finalist? And if anyone has any suggestions of how I could improve, especially my math, they would be greatly apperciated. Thanks so much!

P.S. What would my score be if it was converted to the SAT?

By hey on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 06:16 pm: Edit

Dont get the books, there a waste of time. Last Year i think i got a 49V 69 M 53WS (171), i didnt take any SAT courses or books, just reviewed for a half hour the day before and got 75V 80M 63WS (218) An increase of 47. So dont go out and do tons of test prep, just review the rules and some of the sample problems the day before.

By Christine on Wednesday, December 18, 2002 - 06:25 pm: Edit

hey, maybe the only problems were that you were taking your time reading the directions and getting familiar with the style of problems because you didn't thave the SAT strategy or knowledge ofwhat teh SAT was, but that's a GREAT increase.

Chicago, look at the post above your own, LMAO....
Review Geometry's triangle and angle theorems.

By Jim Johns on Friday, December 20, 2002 - 08:29 pm: Edit

I got a 77 V, 78 M, 75 W for an index of 230. I was shocked I did so well on the verbal, my verb SAT is only 720. I am angry at the math score. I do an awful lot of competitive math and have gotten 800 on every practice psat I have taken. I realized the one question I got wrong on the math test about five minutes after we took it. It was one of the most powerful temptations of my life to go back and change it, but I think I'd have regretted it, so I didnt

I'm going to go take the PSAT's from a kaplan computer program right now. It's probablly a little different, but we'll see. I'll post my scores later...

By gymnast3218 on Sunday, December 22, 2002 - 10:24 am: Edit

All the sophmores out there, don't worry about your PSAT scores this year because they are absolutely not reflective of your junior year scores. Last year as a soph, I got 183 on them, something like 59V 61M and 60 something in W. Took an SAT in the spring to see how I would do, got 750V 660M. Finally got junior PSATs back yesterday 74V 73M 76W= 223. Up 40 points since last year. So don't fret if you're a soph. It's not a reflection of you this year.

By jim johns on Sunday, December 22, 2002 - 02:53 pm: Edit

Yeah I didnt think I'd do much better junior year, but then I raised my score from a 209 to a 230. I think the experience from sophomore year helped me be more comfortable junior year

By not much help on Thursday, December 26, 2002 - 09:37 am: Edit

No - your high school is the only place you can get your PSAT scores. They will give them out when they feel like it. You may not get them back immediately on your return. Out daughter's school waited until February last year to give them out. I hope your school is a bit more prompt.

By Lena on Thursday, December 26, 2002 - 12:12 pm: Edit

Gah. I`m going crazy for my PSAT scores. I`m a junior, this is my second time taking the test, and last year our results were reported to us around Thanksgiving. I have at least another week or so because of Christmas break to languish in a PSAT-less hell! I want my scores!

V #22: ..., the author most directly emphasizes her earlier sense of (D) naivete.
You could have come to this conclusion from the phrase "too limited/thick to comprehend my family's suffering" (47-48).

M #31: xyz=1; yz=1
Column A: x Column B: xy
It cannot be determined b/c, while x has to be equal to 1, y is possibly greater than or less than 1 (either y>1 and z<1 OR y<1 and z>1).

By TJ_guy on Monday, December 30, 2002 - 09:39 pm: Edit

What difference a year can make. I got 188 last year (65v, 67m, 56w). After some vocab work, more familiarity with math questions, and a little studying for writing, I scored 225 this year (70v, 80m, 75w). I also took the Dec. SAT, but havent gotten those yet (hopefully, I got 1530+). To all those out there with 1300 SATs, you CAN get 1500+ if you just be careful on math and learn some reading strategies. Im from Virginia, cutoff last year was 218 i believe.

By beck86 on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 08:24 am: Edit

As far as math goes: I'm a junior this year taking AP Calc. I know a lot of my friends in this class had a hard time on PSAT math (too busy remembering derivatives to remember the algerbra 1 on the test).
In addition, most of us havent had algerbra 1 since 8th grade. I don't think they had lost the ability or knowlegde required for the test. It was probably that they had just lost the facility with the concepts needed to complete the test in the required time. If you are a sophomore taking a high level math, remember to go back and practice math a lot!

By junior on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 04:11 pm: Edit

In response to beck, I really think that is a problem with a lot of schools these days. They rush their students through geometry/algebra/trig, then they brag about how many of their juniors are already taking Calculus. Calculus is useless if you dont know how to apply more practical and basic algebra. I am a junior and I am taking Pre-Cal. Most of the other kids in my class are lost because they have to whip out their calculators for one-digit multiplication. The SAT and PSAT should remind teachers that it is not how quickly the students move through the material, but how well they learn it. That's just my 2 cents...

By twilite on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 06:01 pm: Edit

I have been hounding the people who work in my school's main office for the first two weeks of December before break. They kept saying that they would send the scores out as soon as they got them from the college board people. Why hasn't the scores come to my school yet, does anyone know? 'Cause I still haven't received my scores, and it's going to be 2003!!!

By yourhelpfulcynic on Tuesday, December 31, 2002 - 06:53 pm: Edit

Relax, twilite, you need to take a more lenient view of the whole thing. MY school hasn't sent the scores out yet either, but I'm not really surprised :) Yet another symptom of a diseased school district, perhaps they'll get a new one, one of these days.

By DianaBoyd on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 03:38 pm: Edit

Well I took my PSAT on Oct 15 and it's Jan. 1 and I still haven't got my score back. No body at my school has gotten them.

By beck86 on Wednesday, January 01, 2003 - 04:02 pm: Edit

I agree with junior(sort of). I have noticed that problem as well. My school even offers an over the summer pre calc to better rush u into calc as a junior. Some kids end up not knowing their math as well as they should, because junior year AP calc becomes the goal, instead of mastery of fundamental math.
I also see another side to the issue. They are taking this math now, while we are taking other stuff. Even if we knew the math well, it still might take a little review. We shouldn't have to relearn it (if we learned it well the first time), but not using it on an everyday basis could still put us at a disadvantage.

I'm happy, I finally got my scores: 230, 70v, 80m, 80w. But what doesn't make sense to me is that I got 80 writing even after missing two hard ones. We go over scores on Wednesday, maybe it'll make sense then...

screw you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By yourhelpfulcynic on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 11:49 pm: Edit

David, it's probably because they curve it. Just like all other standardized tests; depending, you might be able to get four or five wrong on the language portion of the SAT and still get an 800. I bet this is the same way.

By curious on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 01:37 am: Edit

new to this boards—what's the rules on duplicating someone's name? I suppose you can't do it if they're registered, but otherwise... :)

By Bigtom on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 02:54 pm: Edit

You can't miss 5 or 6 problems on the SAT verbal and still get an 800. One is the absolute minimum

By twilite on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 09:39 pm: Edit

Wait a sec... I also got only two wrong on my PSAT verbal - but I received a score of 77. How's that possible?

By Justwannahelp (Justwannahelp) on Friday, January 10, 2003 - 01:48 am: Edit

i'm a freshman at an extremely small private school in california, and i got 70V, 64M, and 67 W. the scary thing is, my scores were the second best in the entire school. as proud as i am of my respectable scores as a 9th grader, that's frickin scary that only one person did better! god. am i in a school of idiots?

By asdf37 on Friday, January 10, 2003 - 04:00 pm: Edit

I got a 236 (80v, 80m, 76w), which I am definitely happy about...

But I took the Dec. SAT and got only 670 verbal....wtf....I thought the PSAT and SAT test the same material...

Any idea what the 2002/2003 PSAT cycle's (i.e., this year's seniors) cutoff for Semi-Finalist and Finalist were in California?

By Dori on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 - 12:56 am: Edit

i FINALLY got my scores today. Verbal 67, Math 64, Writing Skills 66. Selection Index: 197. 95% percentile. what's the cut off in california for awards?

By Justwannahelp (Justwannahelp) on Saturday, January 18, 2003 - 12:50 pm: Edit

i think if u make a 95 overall percentile you get a letter of commendation.

I think it's time to check with your school counselor! If the school has not rec'd the scores by now, it's time for him/her to call the PSAT folks. Here in Texas, the schools rec'd the scores around Dec. 16th. Possibly the PSAT envelope is piled up in the school office somewhere? Good luck to you.

"notgoing, all you have to do is take some practice tests and buy a review book, and spend some time in the summer studying it as much as you can until you complete the book"

HELLO, REALITY CHECK! Do you guys really think you have to spend your entire lives working to get into college??? Sure, I study, and I work on my tests, but I don't spend my summer "studying it as much as you (I) can until you (I) complete the book"

Sure, it would be great to get into an awesome school. But, judging from your outlook, I think some of you would benefit more if you were in a slightly easier lifestyle for four years. college is supposed to be a CHANGE. Sure, it should be challenging, but if you have to work all summer long for four years just to get in, do you really think you're going to make it in the classes? And while you probably will, are you going to learn anything but your major while you're there???

Does anyone know of any good PSAT or SAT review sessions for sophomores? I took the PSAT this year and did horribly: 59V, 62M and 54W.

I AM motivated and those scores...ugh...well, I really want to improve, but the Princeton Review is only for Juniors right? Is there any good ones I can take THIS year?

By Eileennp (Eileennp) on Saturday, March 15, 2003 - 11:11 am: Edit

Does anyone know what the cutoff in NY is? Will a combined score of 237 guarantee anything in terms of National Merit?

By Dolce (Dolce) on Saturday, March 15, 2003 - 11:36 am: Edit

A combined score of 237 pretty much guarantees great opportunities for scholarships! I'm told that the highest state cut-offs are around 222 (the lowest states are around 202). Of course these vary a little from year to year, but a 237 is practically a perfect score--you should be a semi-finalist for sure. Then just do the required paperwork, and you'll be a finalist. Congratulations!

By Eileennp (Eileennp) on Saturday, March 15, 2003 - 11:43 am: Edit

Thanks for the info. I don't know why there's this shroud of mystery around the PSAT/National Merit.

By Jimjunior (Jimjunior) on Saturday, March 15, 2003 - 05:18 pm: Edit

wow,237 is the highest score I have heard of. What were your scores for each section. I got a 230 with 77V, 78M and 75W. The math should have been an 80 becaused I solved the last problem correctly then wrote down the wrong variable

damn - wow dude. you think I'm some super-nerd or something, no way man. I don't even hang with those geeks. True I am only 14, but I am 6'1' and really athletic (200lb), and all of my friends are juniors or seniors. Dont think that just cause of my age I'm some nerd with no life, I play 4 varsity sports. I actually barely study except for a couple days before a test lol :) and the math comes easy for me. Yea, I know it sounds hard to believe but you'd be amazed, maybe well talk sometime. Anyways, peace out man.

By Dxiw (Dxiw) on Saturday, March 15, 2003 - 07:18 pm: Edit

damn - btw, to correct a mistake in my last post I am 15 not 14. I started junior year at 14 but my birthday was December 17. Anyways, peace man.
