FOW~

I saw that message in another thread:

Quote:

I strongly suggest that you take some time and read a SAT word list--most of the words that are in my textbook's analogies are at the same time on the word list. In addition, the textbook that I use is widely acclaimed and used in numerous high schools across the nation.

Would you be kind enough to enlighten this community as to the nature of the book you use? If the book is widely acclaimed and used in numerous HS, it sure won't be a secret.

I am EXTREMELY interested in reading about any SAT book and I am afraid that I have not seen the one you have mentioned in your other post. So please tell us what it is?

Also, if you could, could you clarify the relation between your analogies and THe wordlist? Do you mean that all the words in the analogies' section of your book are also in a wordlist in the same book?

I believe that I qualify as a person who has read a few wordlists and knows a little bit about the SAT-1 analogies. I would like to read your clarifications before posting my opinion on the subject.

Thankies!

Nothing ... just to highlight your perspicaciousness!

Oh...Thanks.

Hey,

I am referring to the Sadlier-Oxford vocabulary workshop series. There are 8 Levels, from Level A to Level H. The wordlist I am talking about is the 300 words from Level H.

By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 08:27 pm: Edit

Cool - let me check it out.

By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 08:40 pm: Edit

From what I gathered so far, this seems to be a series of generic vocabulary books. There is an impressive list of schools that use the books as well as a great number of homeschoolers.

Just one more question .... Are the 7th and 8th level supposed to be representative of college admissions or standardized tests?

By Logic447 (Logic447) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 09:36 pm: Edit

Yeah, my school uses those books too. I think they're horrible. You have to determine the vocabulary definition yourself by matching it up with the word and then you proceed to do exercises like antonyms and stuff. If you got one incorrect definition you could have messed up big time.

By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 09:46 pm: Edit

The reviews on Jerome Shostak seem to be HIT or MISS. Most of the reviewers give 5 or 1. The books sell for $8.44.

I could not find any "bootlegged" list of the 300 words that could be compared with the 10RS. However, if the few analogies posted by FOW are indicative of the 300 words, it does not bode well for the effectiveness of the series to improve a SAT-1 score. As anyone familiar with the SAT knows, vocabulary does not carry the importance of strategies and time management. Considering that the "alloted" time for an analogy is between 20 and 45 seconds, there is virtually no chance that FOW's analogies would ever surface in a real test.

Oh well, that is my uneducated guess of the day :)

By Fairyofwind (Fairyofwind) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 09:51 pm: Edit

I agree with Logic, the book is quite difficult to work through--but the analogies and "review" sections are particularly difficult. The words in the wordlist themselves are highly representative of college admissions/standardized tests, though the review units are very challenging. I highly recommend this set to anyone preparing for the SATs; the wordlists are highly relevant.

By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 10:10 pm: Edit

Fairy~

How many real SAT have you taken? Please answer truthfully. It is not a loaded question.

Do you honestly believe that the words and the analogies you have posted so far are relevant to the SAT-1 test?

FYI, I WILL order 2 books from the series and then run them in my program that compares the words with the real tests I have. If you want to save me time, you could type out 50 more words to add to the analogies that you posted. That should make a credible sample and a reasonable test of relevance.

My school uses vocabulary workshop as well. You can get the answers online too!

By Logic447 (Logic447) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 11:04 pm: Edit

Yeah, most of the sites were closed down though like vocabularysucks.com.

What is your current SAT score Xiggi? I think it can only help if you are in a specific score range.

By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Monday, August 11, 2003 - 11:08 pm: Edit

I saw one link to a closed site but I did not see any sites with answers.

Logic, I took the SAT in June and I am done with it.

Oh. Then forget about the SATs! Spend your money on something else! LOL

Does anybody know the website for the answers to the Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop? Level E.
You probably won't believe me, but I'm not going to use it to cheat, I'm going to use it to check my answers. I hate being in class, answering one of the questions, and getting it wrong. I mean, if I cheated, then chances are I wouldn't do too good on the tests, because I would have just copied stuff down instead of actually doing the work. And I'm an A student.. I haven't gotten anything below a 100 on the vocab tests yet this year. I wouldn't want to blow my grades just so I don't have to spend an extra half hour doing the homework. So if anybody knows the site, please, email me at sweetsnsuch49@hotmail.com . It would really mean alot =)
