By Mitodnaman (Mitodnaman) on Friday, July 04, 2003 - 09:31 pm: Edit

I need a really, really good book that will help me raise my verbal part of the SAT. Can any one help me with their past experiences with SAT books, and how they helped them in the verbal part?

Thanks:

there is a 3,500 SAT I vocab list on the "Barron's how to prepare to SAT I" book, some people say that if you know all the words on that list, you'll score above 700 on SAT I verbal. I brought the book, it's very helpful.

Try Kaplan too. I liked it.

what about critical reading? What's the best book for that?

I think you cannot prepare for critical reading with a book. All you need to do is concentrate really hard on the test day, keep your cool and put a bit of logical reasoning into your answers.

Know the vocabulary also. Sometimes the questions refer to unusual words and expressions.

I got a question, if we are taking the october sat is it possible to learn all of barron's 3500 list by then if we haven't done any word lists at all before (say i started now)? Im thinking about first memorizing the ~550ish hot prospect words first and then going straight into the bigger list. I will also be out of country throughout august so that might hurt me, but ill still try to review my lists during that time. Is it possible?

Wizz-
YES ITS POSSIBLE
I am memorizing the Grubers 3400 vocab list at one column (35 words) a day. This would take me about 97 days ( I hope my math is right)and I will be finished by October SAT/PSAT time.
If you work on the barrons list at a pace of about 50-70 words a day you too could be finished by October. Also remember that of those 50-70 words a day you will probably know at least 5-10 of them so it isnt that bad.
The key is to pace yourself.

P.S
don't forget to circle the words you have trouble with and go back to them, otherwise they may slip your mind
