Spare me the lecture about how history is bad to self-study. I just want to know which book to use, because I'm goingt to do it anyway.
Is Barron's sufficient?

PR does an excellent survey review and has good practice questions. But, for a course like this one, you really should have a bona fide textbook for all of the facts that the study guide misses.
You should pick up a copy of the latest edition of Palmer and Colton (ninth I think) and read it along with PR.
Also, make sure you understand how to write the kind of essay the readers look for on this test. In other words, deviate from the five-paragraph essay AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Finally, spend the balance of your time from the from the enlightenment to WWI focusing especially on the nineteenth century.

Great stuck with Barron's...Should have asked first, eh?
Ill get PR, trying to afford/find Palmer and Colton's will be a reach. Anything that is good in the way of textbooks other than P&C?

Check out half.com . You should be able to get Palmer for less than $20 (maybe even $15 if you go back a few edition).
This is really important. you are trying to replicate a college class. No Western Civ. Professor worth his/her salt would try to conduct a class with a review book. The best use Palmer.

For an actual textbook, try The Western Heritage. That is what my AP Euro class used, and it was excellent!

I'm sure that Kagan is more than okay, but Palmer is something of an "old standby" and really has the best description of the French Rev. bar none.
