10 real SATs ... 200 points in 3 weeks is very possible

By Nemo (Nemo) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 11:20 pm: Edit

That's true. It's always easier to do if the 200 is coming from a lower score.

Apples and oranges. This is like asking if it's okay to replace a textbook with a legal pad. You need both.

i know
but what i need to improve is the verbal part! so maybe take the whole test won't help me much .

HERE'S HOW TO IMPROVE

Obviously, the test isn't going to change. Questions may change, but the structure is the same.
*Study SAT Structure
*There's timelimit for each part, know each.
*Buy a VERB vocabulary book, and STUDY THE COMMON WORDS. Use a notecard!

If the SAT Verbal was written so a 6th grader could read it, we would have no problem. The diction and vocabulary used is the only problem. LEARN the common verbs used in the SAT Verbals, n you won't have a problem at all.

Read those books though that everyone suggested. They actually do help. The structure of the sentence or words could help you cut down your choices from ABCD to just A and B.

Goodluck

I raised my score from a 600 to a 740.
Here's an email I wrote to someone who asked me how I improved:

_________________________________________________
Hey!
I kinda surprised myself with such a pleasant jump from 660 to 740- though I was also hoping to jump to 800 in the math department.

Lets see... What did I do different this time around? Hmmm
1) Last time [Jan], I'd done quite a few of the 3500 words from Barrons, but hadn't practiced too many analogies, and most improtantly, hardly practiced any critical reading passages. I'd done the barrons tests, and had done a couple of old SAT papers.
This time around, I just bought the must have book, 2003 edition of TEN REAL SATS, and just practiced a paper-a-day leading up to the SAT. My scores in these papers ranged from my already 1420 to as high as 1570. Basically, it helps getting you acquainted with the different question types- my suggestion, practice as many papers as you can leading up to the test [start around the 30th of September, doing a paper a day from then]. I went trhough the word lists again in the last 3 days, writing down words i didn't know in a register, after which, I started learning them from the register, and started striking out words that started to stick. Basically, READ and attemp many many critical reading passages. Go through analogies, and do a few sentence completion exercises [these are not that crucial, since it all boils down to how well you know your words].

2) For math, I've never had any problems right from the beginning, other than one-or-two terrible stupid mistakes per paper, which I wasn't able to get rid off. The SAT math is very very easy- and there's where the problem lies- you start rushing through questions, thinking of them as DAMN easy... But remember one thing- if you find a very very simple question toward the end of any section, be cautious- it means that there is some trick to the solution. You have to pay attention to these questions and spend some extra time on them. For example, in the June paper, I remember the last question of the first math section, and it looked soo soo simple. I arrived at the answer in seconds- but then, i realised it was too simple. I reread the question again, and I found a catch- I saved 20 points!!! My advice- read the questions nice and slowly, think about it [rather than rushing], solve it on paper/calculator [rather than in your mind], take a deep breath, and answer. The only way to study for it is by practicing exercises and papers..

To tell you the truth, in the first 7 papers [10 real sats] I hardly every touched 700. It was towards the end [three days before the SAT], that I smashed the 700 barrier, reaching scores like 740,750,770! Math was unpredictable, for I never went below 720, but rarely touched 800. Just do your math sections with your fullest concentration, and READ the questions very well.

If you haven't already bought/ordered it, BUY TEN REAL SATS!
Good luck with your October SAT. I hope my advice helps you- I think I just got lucky. But maybe, just maybe, it was my work regimen. I hope this is what you wanted.

I agree fully with everything Smac86 said. I have the 2003 edition of 10 REAL SATS and it is great. I took the first one (Nov. 95) and got a 1300 (580 V - 720 M) with no prep. My math raw score was 55 out of 60, so I am very pleased. I got five out of seven "5" ranked problems right, but unfortunately I got a couple of "3s" wrong as well. I know my verbal is bad, but I guessed on a lot, but on the real test I won't do that. Also, I haven't begun preping at all, so I think that a 1300 is quite good for that. I'm gonna go over vocab a lot and do lots of critical reading sections.

well. fist of all. thanx guys.

em it´s actually really embarass to say. the first time i took the SAT practice test i had 300 in my V part. after i did KAPLAN SAT it improved to 450 but still i found it hard to even across 500 line. and i was hoping get a 600 later......

i tried to memorize the voca list ,and it turns out that i only learned one fifth of the whole list. face the paper. i am still half doing and half guessing.

it´s really bad. .
