Hey guys i live in florida and my friend(he just moved from ny) was talking about this school named stuyvesant that in new york..........and i was wondering if he was right on how god it is and how everyone are geniuses that go there and they all go ivy. Also is it hard to get into.

By Entropie (Entropie) on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 07:06 pm: Edit

yep. I heard it's the most challenging uptight school (isn't it a boarding school?)

i also heard that most people in there are snobby. and there aren't as many geniuses as they say.

It is the next best thing to TJ.

"It is the next best thing to TJ."

Nope, its better.

"yep. I heard it's the most challenging uptight school (isn't it a boarding school?)"

Challenging? Yes.
Uptight? No.
Boarding? No.

"i also heard that most people in there are snobby. and there aren't as many geniuses as they say."

I beg to differ. There aren't too many snobs here (maybe a few, nothing that'd give Horace Mann kids a run for their money though). On the other hand there are quite a few 'genuises'. The overall quality of the student body is second to none.

Well, it isn't God but it is good. The school is one of the "elite" high schools if you can say that. Well known for math/science one of the best in NYC. Very high placement for top colleges.

Stanfordhopeful- Do you go to Stuy?

By Winnerpl (Winnerpl) on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 07:31 pm: Edit

I never heard of TJ, but anyways about Stuyvesant, speaking from personal experience (I'll be a senior there this fall) I can say that if you wnat to challenge your brain then that's the school for you (it's public, not boarding). There a a few geniuses but CERTAINLY not most;but most are very smart. (I'm average at the school, grade wise) There are many APs you can take and even regents level classes are taught more at the SATII level. Snobby is not the word to describe most people there, though it may seem as if they are since everyone is pretty smart and tries to get the highest grade possible (except those who cut most classes everyday). The admission test is though. It's a lot like the SAT (20000 kids take the test every year, top 650 scores are accepted). If you want to know more feel free to e-mail me).

Apguy, yes.

Winnerpl, name please.

TJ is actually Thomas Jefferson. It is a magnet school that has a focus on math and science. Stuyvescent and TJ consistently send the most students to the IMO every year.

I haven't had good experiences with private schools. I applied for the Bergen Acadmies in Hackensack, NJ but I didn't get in. A few weeks later, there was an article in the Bergen Record (serving my county) that the academy takes the socio-economic factors into consideration when selecting students. There were none from my town Midland Park (which is upper-middle class) when I applied (3 years ago - now there are two) but over twenty from Franklin Lakes and Upper Saddle River (which have tons of houses over 1 million dollars). Since my daddy isn't some corporate executive who can donate 1 million dollars to the school, people like me lose out to the rich kid. So I happen to be a little biased toward private schools. Thanks for reading my two cents.

Although it may seem that I am still bitter, I am totally not. I wouldn't want to attend a private school for my public school has done wonders for me.

Think about it:

Stuyvesant takes the smartest kids from the largest city in the US: New York (actually, im not 100% positive its the biggest, heh). Now think of the kids. Theyre not your ordinary white kids. New York's kids are immigrants. First generation immigrants are (usually) smarter than Americans. Stuyvesant is filled to the brim with chinese kids. Then come the indian kids. Then the white kids (which consist of other immigrants, such as russians). Then come the "American" white kids. No, im just kidding, im sure there are more American white kids in Stuy.

[rant] And i had a chance to get in, too! But then my parents decided to move from Brooklyn and into the middle of nowhere New Jersey when i was in 7th grade! Argh! [/rant]

Oh yeah, the math part of Stuyvesant is very easy. I dunno about the verbal part, though (cause i didnt study it).

How does Stuyvesant compare to the Illinois Math and Science Academy?

By Montydsw11 (Montydsw11) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 03:35 pm: Edit

It is way better than IMSA. TJ is the only equivilent school in the country.

stuy beats TJ at every math competition. the freshman there take calculus. they offer every AP course. over 100 publictions including an award winning bi-weekly. 19 intel semi finalists. 2 nobel prize awards. 27 kids get accepted into harvard every year. thats the most in the country regardless of percentages. the rest go to MIT. they have the most 1600's. but the good thing is that since its in new york, the kids are really down to earth. tons of celebrities graduated from the school including the asian chick from charlie's angels. that just proves how well rounded these kids are. the most elite in the nation.

By the way, isn't Hunter College HS a more competitive and academically demanding high school than stuy? I've heard you need to be invited to take a primary test in 6th grade, and then if you do well on that test, you are qualified to take another one before you enter the school

Do you guys have masive grade inflation if 93 is only top 50%?

By Spiffybrownboy (Spiffybrownboy) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 03:51 pm: Edit

In our school class, a 93 is about 55th-60th class rank out of 283. I know that doesn't compare to Stuy, but would colleges consider this a "competitive class?" A 90 is around 75th.

That is insance by the way, i think my hs has had 1 or 2 harvard kids in like 50 years

"Do you guys have masive grade inflation if 93 is only top 50%?"

Nope. Its actually harder than your average HS and you [generally] work for your grade. Yes, the kids are just that smart.

"How is gym graded?"

Physical Education does NOT get averaged it. If it did, people would have insane average just by showing up.

How does bronx science compare to stuy?

By Sar (Sar) on Thursday, July 03, 2003 - 01:05 pm: Edit

compare in what way?

academically, i'd have to say Stuy is better, just cuz of the population. people who don't make it to stuy go to bronx sci and brooklyn tech.

socially, i don't know. depends on whom you talk to. lol

hunter isn't bad at all. if i'd known about it, i would have tried to get in, too.

grades at stuy are unweighted.

an entire school of 3000-4000 people obviously can't be the same... yeah, there are some snobby people, but they usually earn their right to be snobby. Cutters... are usually the artists. since it's a SPECIALIZED SCIENCE AND MATH HIGH SCHOOL, pure artists don't fare well here. :)

and plenty of people from stuy each year go to the city or state university.

wow...how is it possible to get like 97 percent for courses like English? The teacher must really be marking generously if he/she gives out near perfect scores for essays/projects/presentations...

At my high school, the highest English mark is 93% - this is in IB English HL course.

Yes, the caliber of students is THAT high. Most of the 97's are well-deserved.

The New York system of grading is extremely screwed up. There are some classes for which numerical grades just do not apply, like in Latin, English, and Spanish, and letter grades must be applied. My Latin teacher never looked at the questions there were nor the questions right, just at the numbers wrong, and gives a curved-based letter grade on that, he said he hates thinking in numbers, same with Span. And how can you tell the difference between a 98 paper and a 93 paper in New York--in my school--they are "A"

Sorry, I'm a little late on this but yes, Canadian Idol, it is weighted. Unweighted I would say around an 88 or 89 is 55-60th class rank as well.

By Sar (Sar) on Friday, July 04, 2003 - 06:05 pm: Edit

Not all teachers give numerical grades for papers. Well, in stuy, anyway, most of the english teachers i had gave letter grades on papers, or graded on a scale of 1-5 or 1-6. some eng teachers refused to let us know about our paper grades. said we shouldn't be as concerned about those as we were about just reading our assigned works and thinking about how we could relate to them.

Meaningful class participation was always a must.

gosh, i'm talking about stuy in the past tense now. so sad.

Students also get 80s and 70s. tho 70s are mostly for ppl who just don't show up often enough. 80s are for those who don't try hard enough on their papers, or who write obvious BS. ("i liked this poem a lot because it sounded peaceful. the end.")

some teachers believe literature is subjective and that the purpose of English classes is not to evaluate students' writing but to teach them how to write better, so they give students a 90 for being enthusiastic about the works they read and showing up every day, then add points for other things like participation and quality of writing. (some people might call this "grade inflation.")

I had an english teacher once who counted class participation as 10% of our grade. I had him twice. both times, i got 90. dangit, i tried my best. i just couldn't understand the western way reasoning and ideals yet, so i didn't raise my hand cuz i couldn't fit in my comments anywhere. lol

wait, where have i wandered off to?
*sighs* I'm going to City College over Cornell HE(my first choice after med programs... well, Cornell and NYU). it seemed like a good idea at the time, cuz i got into the med program at City College and it was the closest one to home and the cheapest, and i didn't fancy the idea of applying regularly to med schools, but what i'm seeing during the summer program is making me doubt my decision. it's like a month of remediation, or something. i've never felt so... unchallenged... before. i hope things get better in the fall, or i'm seriously considering trying to get into barnard next fall, regular med school applications and weeder biochem or no.

great, i've wandered again. probably cuz there's nothing more for me to say about this topic. lol okay i'll shut my trap now. :)

For Stuy, does the teacher have any say in the grade? For my school the teacher has no say - its just your tests and quizes. So if you want to get a 98 then you gotta get 98 average on the tests and quizes. In the grades that you posted, i see a lot of XX.00's. No way is that an average - meaning a teacher had to have some say. Although there are some random decimal numbers, too.

TJ is sooooooooooooooooo much better than Stuyvesant.

Haha, no, I'm just saying that because I went to TJ. :)

Crystal Baller: (in response to "stuy beats TJ at every math competition") *ahem* ARML 2003!!!111 ;)

Um... TJ has students taking Calc as freshmen too. Yan Zhang took Diff Eq as a frosh... or maybe it was a more advanced math course.

Blahty blahty blah.

eh. high school, college, big dif. i know i didn't have much to contribute to stuy's prestige. i just didn't drag it down. lol

Well, individual class grades are given in whole numbers on a scale of 0 to 100 (actually i think the default grade for someone who just can't do the work is a 55, and then they use codes to denote special circumstances) by the teacher. the teacher weighs scores on tests and quizzes and projects and class participation and attendance and effort and anything else he or she wants (gender included--can't be ignored when there's only one girl in the class after every other girl transfers out in the second week of classes... but it's really rewarding persistence and enthusiasm more than gender; if the girl just sits there frowning the whole time, her gender wouldn't do her any good lol), and then the admin averages the grades for our subject averages. sometimes it comes out whole, and sometimes it doesn't.

so in short, the teacher has almost total say in the grade, though the way the grade is given must be approved by the administration. the student can complain and go to the admin or to the student union if there's a disagreement, but the teacher still has the final say, unless the grade is truly and grossly unfair.

And yeah, if u did any practice problems for the specialized HS test and if u just studied ur subjects throughout JHS, it should have been pretty easy.

I'm sorry. But i didn't hear Montgomery Blair Magnet recognized here. Does 17 intel semifinalists out of a class of 100 in 2002 matter? Most ever. Or should I go with plenty of semifnialists this year and the 3rd place winner. We rival Stuy and TJ.

By Crystal_Baller (Crystal_Baller) on Saturday, July 05, 2003 - 10:24 pm: Edit

By Haiyaa (Haiyaa) on Sunday, July 06, 2003 - 02:13 am: Edit

Crystal Baller, you're just out of it. Montgomery Blair is very prestigious. It's just not a completely magnetized school like TJ and Stuyvesant, which is probably why it wasn't mentioned. The magnet part of the school is pretty small.

That's not the NY grading system. I go to school in NY and have yet to see such grading being done. It must be limited to your school and a few others.

I remember a couple of years ago TJ had 123 National Merits. That was the most any high school in the country had. Trouble is - TJ bleeds the best out of the regular schools but that is what happens when you have a magnet school.
Great school and so is Stuyvesant.

By Pimpdaddy (Pimpdaddy) on Monday, July 07, 2003 - 07:31 pm: Edit

123 national merit scholars doesnt seem like that many. Though i dont know exactly how many stuy has, i just know that when we recieved our letters for national merit, every person in my homeroom recieved one, save for about 1 or 2 people in a class of 30

11 Yale
4 Harvard
1 Princeton
2 Dartmouth
2 Cornell
5 Columbia
8 UPenn
3 Brown
1 Stanford
1 M.I.T.

And I thought THAT was insane.

1 Harvard
10 yale...

Personally knowing people from both schools due to MOP, i know a bit about both these schools. Stuyvesant and Thomas Jefferson ARE on the same caliber. Individually however TJ at least has more mathemtically talented individuals. Montgomery Blair is also a very good school also. And for those of you who have never heard of TJ or Stuyvesant or Montgomery, well you are just too ignorant and not intelligent enough to meet some of these people at academic competitions/etc.

Ali if you're talking about Stuy then you can be either and take the test (9th grade one is harder, of course, and a lot fewer people take it).

And Haiyaa stop generalizing. Very few kids that I know (and I go to the school) are "stuck-up snobs". And I'm not so sure that (all) TJ students "acknowledge that other schools have extremely gifted students".

This post is exceedingly stupid.

But so everyone will just shut up about which school is better: http://www.auap.com/prepschoolclass.html

That is from an objective viewpoint. From a subjective one, I say that while the environment can mold a person, attributing personal success to any given school is both degrading and foolish.

By Ali_Liu (Ali_Liu) on Thursday, July 17, 2003 - 04:52 pm: Edit

Q for Everyone: Can u get in stuy after gr.9????
(just curious)

By Sar (Sar) on Thursday, July 17, 2003 - 11:42 pm: Edit

percentages are results of the class sizes. the comparison is not as objective as we think. better to see it as all schools on the list being just as good as each other. and prep schools send to elite schools students who are not necessarily a good fit for those schools (they just don't get along with the environment--this is where extreme stress comes from). i don't like prep schools/courses. too forced.

yes. i know at least 2 people come in each year at the 10th grade level. there are probably more, but i don't know about them.

here's what i posted on a convo that no1 will ever read cuz it's from march archives..man i'm soooo bored at work...lol

"I just graduated from stuy. Great school i must tell you. Great facilities. so liberal cuz they let u choose from so many classes and scheduling options (esp senior year). but what i must say is that magnet schools tend to have kids come out as herbs...such as pimpdaddy and that TJ person above...why are u so cocky for? so you go to stuy/tj? so you think it's the best...good for u!
Altho, i do understand that this is kinda like a competition against that TJ person, I still dun dink we should waste time like this arguing over who's the best. It may be fun at times....haha rite now i'm wasting my time writing this cuz I'm so bored at work.

In June, my last month at stuy, at first I felt kinda disappointed with it. I felt like I should have learned a lot more about myself, and about my values, rather than all school stuff. And i felt like the school just had a lot of people that were so herby...but later on, i realized that stuy does have a lot of kool ppl, and that it sucks have to leave all of them. And that I realli did come out learning a lot more than i thought.

Sorry to offend you competitive pplz...
Overall, based on my biased opinion, stuy is much better than TJ hahaha
go Stuy! 2003! "

what i'll remember most from stuy, are the best friends, all teh fun times on the 2nd floor after school, cross country and track, and having winokur as my calc BC teacher. haha scratch that last one..

This was from a while ago, but TJ's 123/400 Semifinalists is no big deal

This year at Blair we got 51 National Merit Semifinalists out of a class of 99. Do the math. The average PSAT score out of all 99 people was 233.

Our average SAT score this year is 1530. I know this is pretty much all mindless bragging, but it's true, not all that many ppl have heard of Montgomery Blair, but we're still an awesome group of students.
