I just started playing the guitar and my fingers are killing me. Any advice?

Even if your fingers hurt, just keep playing. Your fingers will eventually become calloused (yes) and it will hurt less eventually. But there definitely is a "break in" period.

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I'm losing feeling in teh tips of my stupid fingers and I ight have permanent indentations from the strings but hey, no biggy

Yeah, just keep playing. I myself never developed actual callouses, but my hands never hurt nowadays, and I've only been playing for about 3 years, even though on average I practice about 20 hours a week at least. I also only have an electric now, since I sold my acoustic, and that might have something to do with helping to condition my fingers well without any callouses. Whenever I play acoustics, however, my fingers still do not hurt. Feel free to contact me, though, because I have a lot to say that might help beginner guitarists that not many others seem to say.

I've played about 4 yrs...i started on electric, which is a lot easier on the fingers and by the time I moved onto acoustic my fingers were pretty well broken in so it was no big deal. just keep playing...

i've been playing for 12 years now. take everyone's advice - although it hurts, you have to keep playing. you fingers will callous soon. that's the trick.
