By Riflesforwatie (Riflesforwatie) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 01:16 am: Edit

A lot.
My mom's mother was nearly totally Irish (her ancestors immigrated after 1870).
My mom's father was totally German (ancestors immigrated sometime around 1900 or possibly slightly before).

My dad's mother's mother's father was Dutch (ancestors came over to America at least before the early 1700s).
Dad's mother's mother's mother was full French (ancestors immigrated sometime in the 1800s).
Dad's mother's father's mom was Irish (ancestors immigrated after the 1830s).
His dad's family was an old English family (ancestors at least here since before the Revolution).
My dad's father's mother was American Indian (probably Iroquois).
My paternal grandfather's father was English (we don't know when their ancestors immigrated).

So, lol, I'm German-English-Irish-Dutch-French-Native American. Or to put it more concisely, I'm American. :P

i'm filipina! woot woot (doesnt seem to be that many filipino's on here). i am also around 1/8 or more white (Spaniard) (grandparent's have a mix of Spaniard blood due to the Spaniards coming to and ruling the Philippines for a long time)

p.s. i've met some people who don't consider filipino's as asians (although the philippines is in south east asia). they call us "pacific islanders" (which we are too). whatever.

My chance to tick you all off I guess? I have always believed that one of the main problems with attempting to obtain unity in the USA is that rarely does anyone consider themselves American. People say to me " I am Italian,Irish,Chinese etc.... or others say to me "well you should know about cabbage cause your Irish" And I say "I was born in America what do I know about Ireland or Italy. If someone is born here or if they became a citizen they never say "I am an American" So who is an American? Funny I have never heard a WASP say that they are british or anglo. They either say nothing as the assumption is that they are American or they say "I am an American" After 911 there was a public ad that showed people from every background and they all said "I am an american" .I liked that ad.....Bring it back! Any Americans out there?

^ I'm French Canadian but moved here when I was one and a half... Plus, I interact with my culture. My parents barely speak to me in English, always in French. I eat French and West Indian food. We always follow national traditions such as eat squash soup on Independence Day (Jan 1). I see not only my black heritage but my white european ancestry. I see alot of Irish and Italians do the same. So...you don't know what you are talking about

By Conker (Conker) on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 11:12 am: Edit

Songman, the problem is that many minorities do not feel like Americans, especially Asians and Hispanics. There are whites who continue to make minorities feel like foreigners, and thus you will find that minorities are more reluctant to call themselves Americans.

When a white person talks about their Irish or Italian descent, they're casually discussing their genealogy. Most would still call themselves Americans. You'll find that it's minorities who refer to themselves as Chinese, Hispanics, and blacks, or at the very most Chinese-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and African-American.

By Thebarnrat (Thebarnrat) on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 - 09:50 pm: Edit

Born and raised in SoCali. Same with Dad. Mom from New York. My Dad is pretty much Irish (Black Irish....black hair and blue eyes). My Grandma had the red curly hair and green eyes. My mom is half Irish and half Italian. So I'm a classic Irish Italian mix. I got the Irish looks though, thankfully without the freckles :). Really thick, curly red hair, insanely pale skin, and greenish eyes. I don't tan....but I do the whole burn thing real well.

I'm half Colombian, which gave me some...exotic.. features, and 25% Czech or something in that neighborhood. The last 25% is just...white. I tan fairly easily, and I've only gotten sunburnt a few times.

Poison_Ivy - were you born in Haiti or France or were you born from the Haitian diaspora? If you were born in Haiti, where? Sorry if I seem nosy, but I just spend the last 4 years working for a Haitian company (in Petion-Ville).

I was extremely shocked when I began to read a little Haitian history and what actually happened (the dissolution of family farms/plots and the forced introduction of corporate megafarms) to bring Haiti to the state it's in today.
