to those people who have gmail: what do u think about it? and how did you acquire your code?
By Zantedeschia (Zantedeschia) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 01:41 pm: Edit
I love it (thanks again congressenator)
It's still developing and they're adding new stuff, 1GB of space? How can you not love it?
Um there's no code, just an invite email.
By Jenesaispas (Jenesaispas) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 01:52 pm: Edit
Meh. It's okay. I don't really care about archiving things. I mean, I guess it's kinda cool for future reference, but... I want more features and no ads.

They say its actually very dangerous bc its sort of a "big brother" thing. Google is achiving things permantantly, even if you delete them. After 180 days, under fed law, all emails can be accessed by only a subpoena... Google has been actively recruiting hires with gov security clearances. The conspriracy theorists makes it sound like google is teaming up with in'l govs to spy on electronic transmissions... and help figt terrorism or other crimes.
Also, google is doing specfic marketing-- who is to say they won't sell your info later? Ie: imagine if an insurance co asks google for your records, and google hands them over (for a fee). If the insurance co finds you engage in risky behavior (snoker for example) they could deny you insurance... this is a total violation of privacy.
In fact, 31 separtae privacy agencies have requested google NOT go forward with gmail until they legally formally define the parameters over which they will look at your email.
Google says its not an invasion of provacy bc only the "computers" read your email... but privacy advocates say that is not the issue. The issue is who might get this information from google at a later date.
I don't know how I feel about any of that-- conspiracy theory or valid priavcy concerns? But, I am very curious to see how the gmail system works.

By Astrix (Astrix) on Monday, July 26, 2004 - 10:32 am: Edit
Smhop, Google isn't storing usage data and such, unlike Yahoo and MSN. The targeted advertisting that is displayed is dynamically generated. You're right, that no human reads the mail is not the point. The point is that Gmail is not creating a profile of its users.
Ah. I love Google, with their 'Do No Evil' motto

Oh and I think Gmail kicks ass!!
The interface is simple and uncluttered, the address prompting works great, and most of all 'labels' instead of folders is a fab concept

If anyone wants to share one of their precious g-mail invites with the oldest, meanest, prolific-posting PARENT of all time...
... I have a worthy purpose I would apply such an account to. (Don't even think about asking what the purpose is. I'll give only one clue: it will be helpful to college students majoring in a particular field. All other details are Top Secret!)

I got gmail!!! Yay! I'm so happy!
Thank you SO much, Scott! (sorry, I don't know what your CC name is!)
My first two invites are promised to my best friends, but if I get any others I'll be sure to give them to CCers!
