Do you think that with the new Sony mp3 player being introduced on July 10th, the prices of the 15 gb ipod will go down? Because I want to buy an ipod and was wondering if I should wait a few weeks...

Is the Ipod really that much better than the Rios and other mp3 players out there? I like them, but 300 dollars? Sheesh. I'm tempted to go with one of the imitations.

dell digital jukebox has pretty much the same features... and the 20 GB one is on sale for $223 on Dell's website.

By Tropicanabanana (Tropicanabanana) on Tuesday, July 06, 2004 - 02:04 am: Edit

is the dell jukebox any good?

By Demonllama (Demonllama) on Tuesday, July 06, 2004 - 12:17 pm: Edit

yeah it's pretty good. the 20 gb stores up to 9000 songs (well depends on the size of your songs). it comes with a usb cable and headphones and a remote control and the music match jukebox program which allows you to rip your cds and convert the music files to mp3s and wavs. you also get a cover for your dj, a charger (the battery lasts up to 20 hours after you've charged it for the first time for 6 hours) and you can also record stuff with it. like at lectures, meetings and stuff, and then whatever you recorded will be stored in your dj. you can also transfer data files from your computer to your dj if your computer doesn't have enough space or whatever.

i got it as a graduation gift and i'm pretty satisfied with it. i just need to get speakers for it so i can listen to all my tracks without having to wear headphones all the time.

i got HP handheld for graduation. is that good to use as mp3?? i know it cant hold 300 songs. that's fine.

I think the ipod price won't drop dramatically unless the sony one is such a dramatic improvement that its like "woah..." the ipod has becaude an icon of this decade. it always be the "original."

By Korinfox (Korinfox) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 08:04 pm: Edit

the "original"? I think archos made the first hard drive mp3 player, and I know for a fact that the iPod definately wasn't the first mp3 player... (but one might consider it the one that made them popular because well... apple came out with one) yeah, my only mp3 player is a D-link that I got for 50 bucks wayyyyyy back in the day, 1999 maybe, 32MB, and parallel port connection...

By Eyesclozedtight (Eyesclozedtight) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 09:23 pm: Edit

i think for a limited time if you buy an ibook or a powerbook you get a $200 rebate on an ipod. you can bet your ass i'm gonna take that deal.

By Iamqueena (Iamqueena) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 10:25 pm: Edit

I was saying the "original" (note the quotation marks) because it made mp3 players an icon and extremely popular. I know it is not the first invented mp3 player. :-) . I wanted an mp3 player for a really long time then ipod came out, and since i just bought a new cd player I didn't by another one.

By Rachelvishy (Rachelvishy) on Saturday, July 10, 2004 - 11:30 pm: Edit

I got an ipod mini... okay I never thought it was expensive personally, because me and my dad bought mp3 players 4 years ago and they were near the price but it held 64 megabytes... it ended up being like 14 songs.

SPEAKING OF IPOD- i need music suggestions- because I don't really know many bands or good songs. Everyone who gives me suggestions (my friends) give songs they dont really like but just are 'cool'. Anyone have any good songs they like- I like hiphop, rock. Thanks, lol

By Daffodil22 (Daffodil22) on Monday, July 12, 2004 - 03:20 am: Edit

For the ipod, or for any other mp3 players, is it possible to rip original cd's from your collection to your computer? Then you can play them on your comp or move it to the ipod. I tried this once: copy + paste individual songs to music folder. However, they didn't play in musicmatch jukebox or any other comp player. If its possible to rip cd's to the comp, how is it done?

By Buddnutz (Buddnutz) on Monday, July 12, 2004 - 07:08 am: Edit

Daffodil, there are innumerable programs to "rip" your CD's. I have tried dozens, the best is windows media player, free download from microsoft.com . It can read cd's automatically and rips and average cd in between 5-10 minutes.

Try itunes. It works for macs or pcs, and isn't made by Bill Gates.

By Demonllama (Demonllama) on Monday, July 12, 2004 - 01:45 pm: Edit

i have dell musicmatch jukebox and it has an option for ripping CDs...that's how I do it.

I am thinking of buying an Ipod mini and was wondering if anybody here has one because I am concerned about the amount of memory. Does it make more sense to get the 15 mb one for 50 dollars more?

By Rachelvishy (Rachelvishy) on Monday, July 12, 2004 - 06:16 pm: Edit

jer... it depends on how much music you have. For me, 4 gigs is definately enough. Right now, its only half filled, and I have a lot of songs there that I don't like. I like the way it looks (the green is really cool) and its very small and light-weight. However, if you do have 4,000 songs that you really want there at one time, then I would say definately get the 15 gigabyte one. Depends on your priorities.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. on Monday introduced lower-priced versions of its iPod digital music player with longer battery life, positioning itself against rivals trying to use lower prices to undercut iPod sales.

Apple said the new model iPod has up to 12 hours of battery life, compared with eight hours in previous models. Poor battery performance in some iPods has drawn criticism.

The 20-gigabyte model, which can hold about 5,000 songs, has a list price of $299, lower than the previous price of $399 for a 20-gigabyte iPod. The 40-gigabyte model costs $399.

"Apple is closing the pricing gap between iPod and competitors," said Steve Lidberg, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities. "Combined with a longer battery, Apple addresses the two biggest issues it had with the product."

The Cupertino, California, company, best known for its Macintosh (news - web sites) computer, has turned to digital music as it has failed to make major gains in the highly competitive personal computer market. But in digital music players, Apple also faces strong competition from Dell Inc. and Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (news - web sites). .

iPod claims a 50 percent market share in digital music players. Its sales almost tripled in the previous quarter. Analyst Lidberg expects shipments of 1.2 million iPods this quarter, more than tripling its sales last year.

Greg Joswiak, vice president of hardware product marketing at Apple, said it expects "a very strong growth" in the third quarter, helped by the upgrade. Traditionally the third quarter is stronger than the second quarter due to back-to-school sales, he said.

Joswiak shot down market rumors of 60-gigabyte models in the pipeline. "We have no plans in regard to announcing 60-gigabyte models," Joswiak said. "We are trying to create a much more compelling lineup with two models for 20 and 40 gigabytes at extremely compelling prices."

As part of a pilot program, Duke University plans to give iPods loaded with school calendars and other information to its 1,800 incoming freshmen. Students can download class materials to listen to anything from audio examples of textbook exercises to Spanish songs.

iPod users can now change the playback speed of audio books. The new iPods, which are thinner, also offer improved menu programs.

Apple's iTunes online music service is the most popular legal download site, claiming 70 percent of all songs bought online.

The stock fell 18 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $32.02 in morning trade. (Additional reporting by Derek Caney)

Yay for me! After making the required cash in a rummage sale, I am now able (and have done so) to purchase the coveted IPod. Lucky for me that the 4th Generation pod came out the day I was going to buy one- new tech is so fun!

Student discount saves me $30 so I bought the ITrip thing for the car :) :) :) :)

It's great that apple keeps making things better, but it also sucks because stuff becomes so out of date so quickly. I bougth an iPod mini in April and now I already wish I had the 4th generation. For $50 extra i could have had 16GB more. Errrg

Not to brag too much, but incoming Duke freshmen have just been notified that they will receive the newest IPod (the one introduced this week) as a gift during their orientation this year! My daughter is absolutely thrilled!

By Zantedeschia (Zantedeschia) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 10:22 pm: Edit

I don't (want to) believe you.

By Parentofteen (Parentofteen) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 10:47 pm: Edit

Check out the Duke site under Individual Schools for a website with more details. We couldn't believe it either. But, then again, we really are paying for it! (especially those of us with no financial aid)

By Disappear_Here (Disappear_Here) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 07:31 am: Edit

i believe that for a limited time only the $300 ipods are being knocked down to $220
