F (26), I'm 5'1" and it really doesn't bother me at all (sometimes I play off of it when I need to get something that's out of my reach). What did bother me was that I'd been told when I was 19 that I was 5'2" and no one had bothered to tell me that the measurement was wrong until a couple years ago. ;-)

Here's a link to growth charts according to race, but they only go up to age 18. I guess it's ok since most of us don't grow much after that.
Based on this other link, American males have an average height of 5'9". (which is my height if you want to know)
Assuming the graphs are correct, White people are generally the tallest, followed by Blacks, 'others' and Hispanics.

Do you ever feel like people have a disinclination when they meet you because you are short? And I'm not even that short, 5'9". I would guess probably 35% of the population of 17 to 22 year olds are 5'9" or under, and yet I am still looked down upon, so to speak, when I meet people (this is how I feel). I don't really want/need to be friends with everyone, but it bothers me and I feel like I have to compensate for my height by having a better personality. (this is the same with non-good looking people)

Copper45, I'm 5'10" and I never feel that way. You're average height as well so more likely:
1. You're just imagining things.
2. You come across as unconfident.
3. You're really thin or fat.
Are any of those correct?

Some people in Asia have leg extension surgery. They break your shin bones and stretch your legs. I'm not joking. In Korea, some people have a muscle removed from their thighs so they'll have thinner thighs.
Also, someone told me that 50% of Singaporean men have had er.. genital enlargement surgey.
Ok, I'm highly skeptical about that last bit, but the first two are real.

By Jadex (Jadex) on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 - 08:38 pm: Edit
Female, 18, nearly 5'8". If you're a girl, being tall sucks, because, as earlier stated, guys always go for the short girls. The only thing good about it is that I can reach for the top shelf and can see about how many people are in front of me in a long line. And if you're tall and really thin (which is NOT me), it's hard to find pants.
There's no reason to be height-conscious...most people don't care about it that much.

By Ariesathena (Ariesathena) on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 - 11:17 pm: Edit
Nutrition, environment, exercise (running apparently stunts growth), age of menstruation for girls, among others.
Obviously nutrition is a main one; I know someone who is quite short and it may be in part because he had to control his weight for wrestling in high school.
Environment: Stress can apparently take a few inches off
Women stop growing approximately two years after they get their first periods. That depends on a lot of things - weight, body fat, nutrition, working out.

17, about 5'10". I've always been height conscious, and being 6' is my goal (though it's kinda hard to set a goal for something you have so little control over). I feel like I've stopped growing which sucks because everyone says that guys grow until they are 18 or 19. Hope I can grow at least another inch.
And I like petite girls too. They seem better proportioned than those tall skinny girls.
By Coqui (Coqui) on Thursday, July 15, 2004 - 02:00 am: Edit
of course you like petite girls, they're the only ones shorter than you. when you grow taller than the so called "tall skinny girls", then you can talk.
i'm a female, 17, and 5'9. i'm fine with my height, i play a lot of sports so it's all good. some may think it's a diadvantage for finding guys since the field is narrowed down to 6 ft and above. but it's actually better because guys 6ft+ are usually more athletic, better built, and simply bigger (no insinuation intended).
and Aim78, i was just playin with you. i got nothin but love for guys under 6ft.

Wow, that's pretty impressive (and it certainly makes me feel better, hehe). But I'm surprised that they would make you a forward. Forwards are needed more for rebounds, and while a good vertical is important, don't you need a big frame to box people out? I don't mean to be offensive, but I'm just curious.

Almost 5' 10 (5' 9.8 -ish") ... male. Whats funny is that people have said i come across as being taller. I guess i have a big aura or something ...

I like guys under 6' like 5'8 between 5'11.
Cruise is like 5'6.
By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 02:26 pm: Edit
Cruise is like 5'9" isn't he? Ok idiias, i read those articles and found that the reason women like tall men is because they tend to be more educated and wealthy. Therefore if you're on the smaller end of the scale and you're educated/wealthy i think you'll be OK.
By Poison_Ivy (Poison_Ivy) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 02:30 pm: Edit
No. He's like 5'7 or 5'6.
By Zero (Zero) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 02:41 pm: Edit
Isn't Sly Stallone like 5'5''? personally, i'd be more height conscious of being too tall than too short...i mean, how awkward is it to see a 6'8'' guy with a 5'2'' female?
By Zantedeschia (Zantedeschia) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 07:30 pm: Edit
I don't like tall guys because they're educated and wealthy. It's that silly primal thing where you want to feel protected.
By Idiias (Idiias) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 08:33 pm: Edit
yeah but savedbythebell, why are tall people more successful and wealthy???
and of course short people can still and will be succesful. but naturally tall people go farther. better looking people go farther on average.
By Aim78 (Aim78) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 08:37 pm: Edit
Cruise is 5'7" I think. Stallone is taller, he's 5'8" or something like that. Schwarzenegger used to be 6'1" or so, but now he looks shorter. All that muscle probably weighed him down over the years. Anyway, who cares? In a few years they'll have over-the-counter pills to make you taller. Those mad scientists are creating pills for everything, and the worst part is they call them "natural." How can a pill be natural?
By Savedbythebell7 (Savedbythebell7) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 09:08 pm: Edit
why are tall people more successful and wealthy???
There are many theories surrounding this, but it is said that tall people are inherently more confident. I'm average in height, but I walk and i talk like i'm 7'1" hehe. I suppose better looking people also go "farther" because they're more confident as well. But in the end everyone goes just as far....
By Zero (Zero) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 09:15 pm: Edit
daniel snyder (billionaire who owns the redskins) is really, really short. 5'6'' maybe? i think the image of tall people being more succesful comes from the people who cast tv shows like dallas.
By Duke3d4 (Duke3d4) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 09:53 pm: Edit
studies show that in interviews, if two applicants are neck and neck, the taller one is chosen because tall means strong/confident subconsciously.
Maybe this partly explains the wealthy/success.
By Recordingwater (Recordingwater) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 05:49 am: Edit
I discovered a drawback of being (somewhat) tall today.
I am 5'6" and female.
Anyway, I was shoe-shopping, and all the nice, cool looking shoes I wanted (I was looking for dressy but also sorta casual shoes) had 3 or 4 inch heels!!! Insane!! I was suddenly 5'10"! I felt extremely awkward trying them on and wobbling all over the place. So I left without any nice shoes. =( Why don't they have cool, nice shoes that only have 1 inch heels, damnit? Or no heel at all?!!?

yeah i believe that
By Demingy (Demingy) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 01:12 pm: Edit
Recordingwater, even though I'm short I agree with you. I hate the fact that all of the cute shoes seem to have tall heels. People are insane.

I am white, male, 17 years old and 6 foot 2, but I've been this way since I was around 15. I actually feel more height-conscious than most; being tall means you stick out more, it seems.

This is actually an interesting site about the tallest person in history, Robert Wadlow. He was 8'11: http://www.altonweb.com/history/wadlow/index.html#top

17, female, 5'3". hating life, because I look out of place in the marching band. (shortest one on the drumline)

I always felt awkward wearing heels, but the shoes with high stiletto heels are so cute, so I'm embrassing my height. (5'7.5")
And I feel bad for that record tall guy, he basically died because of it and people always thought that he was a freak.
By Courtbroadway17 (Courtbroadway17) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 11:16 pm: Edit
My mom (and everyone in her family is short.) I got unlucky. I am 5'1'' now, my doctor said if I am lucky I might make it to 5'2'' or 5'3'' (5'3'' stretching it.) Yeah. I really want to be 5'5'' or 5'6'' but even with heels I will never be that tall. Speaking of heels, year round (except summer) I wear them. Oh yeah, and I am 17.
By Esperanza (Esperanza) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 01:06 am: Edit
15, almost 16 (october). f. 5'3". it's strange: i think i stunted my height at age 11-13 because of all-nighters (crazy private schooling), plus i got my period when i was 11, yet i'm still growing. even though it's extremely slow. i wanna hit 5'4"-5'5". is there hope?
so you guys say you're into petite girls, huh? what exactly is petite to you? 5'-5'4" or something? somehow i'm still not quite convinced; tall girls seem to have all the fun.
By Esperanza (Esperanza) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 01:12 am: Edit
can anyone think of something to cheer up shorties?
By Zantedeschia (Zantedeschia) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 01:28 am: Edit
I think usually you only grow for three years after your first get your period, but if you're growing, good for you. Drink lots of milk =)

By Anglophile (Anglophile) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 04:31 am: Edit
As a tall girl (5'9"), I can think of plenty of advantages to being short. You can find shoes in YOUR size, you can wear high heels with more comfort (tall people have more vertical weight, so those tiny little heels are murder!), you have your own "petite" section in stores, almost all actresses are very short, and you don't have trouble finding men taller than you. And many men prefer shorter women because they are less threatening and "cute". I'll let you all in on a little secret. Tall girls are a little jealous at times of short girls. Then we see a short girl trying to reach something on the top shelf and we feel much better.
By Twinkletoes696 (Twinkletoes696) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 07:26 am: Edit
Being short, though, has always made me feel younger and I feel less assertive (don't laugh) without bigger shoes on. Being short in combination with having very small bones has meant that usually I'm mistaken for being younger and I always feel like a little kid.
For what it's worth.

I'm 16... 5'3. This wouldn't be so bad except for my b/f is 6'5... and that makes me look shorter *not to mention it makes him hard to kiss*
By Courtbroadway17 (Courtbroadway17) on Thursday, July 22, 2004 - 11:35 am: Edit
I am 5'1'' and I haven't noticed that guys like short girls. I really wouldn't mind being short, but people are condescending to me (I really don't even think most of them mean it.) Like they talk to there taller friends in a normal voice, and then with me they speak to me in a voice you would use when you are talking to someone younger than you...That is annoying.

The beatles were all average height. Ringo was like 5'5"-5'6"...Paul was around 5'9"...and notice how many girls they had yellin at them 24/7. They're gods.

I measured myself today in my room .. 5' 7" without shoes.
I'm 16 and male and I feel short around people in my grade. I'm going to be a Junior. Will there be a chance for me to hit at least 5'8" ? ?
What height is the normal height range for average males in the junior year of high school?
By Esperanza (Esperanza) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 02:39 am: Edit
hahaha. for all those jealous tall girls (as mentioned by anglophile), if you know you're still growing, just do a lot of growth-stunting things like staying up late every night, not drinking milk, stressing out.. kidding..
By Allena (Allena) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 03:28 am: Edit
Well we don't really go looking for the shortest possible girl on Earth keep in mind... However most guys (including myself) I know want to date somebody shorter then them. I typically don't mind about height... But it was weird going to prom with a girl who was pushing 5`11 and I was only 5`5.
By Boomkat (Boomkat) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 04:54 am: Edit
I'm 5'2" and I'm not bothered by my height. I underestimate the height of everybody around me haha. Being shorter makes me more comfortable around more guys... I don't have to worry about whether or not I want to wear that 4" heel or not.
By Rono_G (Rono_G) on Friday, July 23, 2004 - 05:17 am: Edit
i'm 5'6" - some who want themselves to feel taller, claim that i'm 5'7" hahaha..
i'm most height conscious when i'm working out... everybody at my gym is 6 +
i mean some guys are like 6'5" - hahaha, but sometimes its funny when i can bench press more than the guy who is towering at 6'2"
but yeah.. at the end of the day... i still wish that I was at LEAST 6'
btw, hearing about Tom Cruise/The Beatles made me feel much more confident!! thanks guys. hahahaha

"studies show that in interviews, if two applicants are neck and neck, the taller one is chosen because tall means strong/confident subconsciously.

Yeah, you tell me how many of the billionaires are at least 6' tall. The average height for males is 5'9". I bet you'd find a great many more people who are less than the average than more. There's a reason for this. These billionaires all have confidence. But most short people are deprived of their confidence from youth. That's why shorter people tend to come off worse. I don't think it's any discrimination on the part of the employers.
I'm pretty short myself. But it's pretty funny when people put me side by side with a guy who's a good 3 or 4 inches taller than me, and people say to me, "Wow, you're actually shorter than him?!?"
