As a fan of the music, I just think its nice to have a guy make it big who doesnt need to dress all out gangster, and rap about guns, how many girls he can pimp, and drugs.

His lyrics actually have meaning

I know you all heard this song but actually read through it

Man I promise, she's so self conscious
She has no idea what she's doing in college
That major that she majored in don't make no money
But she won't drop out, her parents will look at her funny
Now, tell me that ain't insecurrre
The concept of school seems so securrre
Sophmore three yearrrs aint picked a careerrr
She like •••• it, I'll just stay down herre and do hair
Cause that's enough money to buy her a few pairs of new Airs
Cause her baby daddy don't really care
She's so precious with the peer pressure
Couldn't afford a car so she named her daughter Alexus (a Lexus)
She had hair so long that it looked like weave
Then she cut it all off now she look like Eve
And she be dealing with some issues that you can't believe
Single black female addicted to retail and well

next verse
Man I promise, I'm so self conscious
That's why you always see me with at least one of my watches
Rollies and Pasha's done drove me crazy
I can't even pronounce nothing, pass that versace!
Then I spent 400 bucks on this
Just to be like nigga you ain't up on this!
And I can't even go to the grocery store
Without some ones thats clean and a shirt with a team
It seems we living the american dream
But the people highest up got the lowest self esteem
The prettiest people do the ugliest things
For the road to riches and diamond rings
We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us
We trying to buy back our 40 acres
And for that paper, look how low we a'stoop
Even if you in a Benz, you still a nigga in a coop/coupe

next verse:

I say •••• the police, thats how I treat em
We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom
We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em
Things we buy to cover up what's inside
Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth
That's why shortys hollering "where the ballas' at?"
Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack
And a white man get paid off of all of that
But I ain't even gon act holier than thou
Cause •••• it, I went to Jacob with 25 thou
Before I had a house and I'd do it again
Cause I wanna be on 106 and Park pushing a Benz
I wanna act ballerific like it's all terrific
I got a couple past due bills, I won't get specific
I got a problem with spending before I get it
We all self conscious I'm just the first to admit it

Scubasteve, Kanye West is my favorite artist, his style is different--he's one of the only guys I've seen who wears sport coats, polos, and air force ones. I think its inventive and refreshing to see something different and his music has a really tight message, very positive. I listen to the college dropout everyday. I like Last Call, Space Ship, Get'm High, Workout Plan, his song w/dilated peoples and his song/with slum village. What about you?

I really like Kanye West and how different he is in his poetic words, but I feel like he isn't the best rapper. He does amazing things as a producer and writer.

the true savior of hip hop is Mr Lif.

he makes kanye's lyrics look like sir-mix-alot's

for example from Mr. Lif's song "Phantom"

Remorse follows me
With his good friend, the threat of poverty
Here's where I am, versus where I think I oughtta be
There's a certain chance I'm a victim of circumstance
I take a look at myself and at first glance
I see who I recently thought to be me
Based on identities public and private
Behold the radio pirate,
A felon, chillin' with a gun to your melon
A pimp with his pockets swellin', a jester
A slave with wounds that fester, the wanna-be
Pre-med 3-D dread an academic reject
Hopin' to detect life, erect what god gave
Human laws are laid, we go to war, come back
And come up with more

I dare you to check new territory
American dream? Time for another story
One where I don't choke to keep afloat
I'm sick of livin' on false visions of hope
With a knife to my own throat
Stick of dynamite inside my overcoat
Because I know the ropes
Reality in this world is bought and sold
A very limited scope of life is shown
And I'm just one of the mold, fully controlled
Left to erode in my humble abode

I don't like him much... There was this hate site that said all he does is "borrow" beats.

kanye west is TRYING too hard to be different and the "savior" or rap that it makes his music seem fake. I don't like him as a person either. He's also really cocky and pretentious.

Just for the record, i like hip hop. but i also accept the fact that its only good for its beats and "coolness factor" or whatever its called when you hear someone bangin their bass.

unfortunately, there will never be a SAVIOR to hip hop because hip hop is unsaveable (yes that's a word). Hip hop is just based on beats and retarted lyrics about sex and girls and money. Once in a while you'll get a rapper who tries to seem "talented" by rapping about religion or triumphing over evil or some crap, but its pointless. hip hop is only good for dancing to and trying to feel cool and gansta.

Cocqui,
I think that you just like hip hop just for dancing and u probably don't actually listen to the lyrics. If u did listen more to the lyrics of rap/hip hop artists then maybe you would see deeper issues than your gross generalization of sex, money and defiling women. Try listening closer to Kanye, Tupac, biggie, etc and maybe you see that hip-hop is more than just some pseudomusic
"only good for its beats and "coolness factor" or whatever its called when you hear someone bangin their bass."
I think that it is rather shallow-minded and hyprocritic to say that you like hip hop music but you only see it as an instrument for the display of superficial topics.

jblackboy05,

first of all, i understand what you are saying. I do listen to the lyrics of A LOT of rap and hip hop. I personally don't use hip hop, others do, inlcluding the artists. 99% of hip hop and rap artists rap about sex, drugs, violence, random things, or themselves. it's just of fact.

i have about 6 tupac and biggie cd's and, yes, they're great, but i don't take the music as seriously as you do for the simple fact that i'm not that type of person. When i say "i dont take it as seriously as you do", i mean that i don't consider tupac or biggie saviors of anything. They are simply people with great talent and a message, and good for them for living out their dream. i don't let music dictate my life (though it can be inspirational), and that's why i can look at it in perhaps a more "cynical(sp)" way.

As for kanye west, many may here his song about jesus and say "wow he's a savior for rap because he's rapping about jesus." But to me he only used this song, and jesus, to gain "credibility" and praise as a "savior" to rap. Look at these lyrics:

"Slow jamz" by kanye...

I told her to drive over in your new whip
Bring some friends you cool with
Imma bring da cool whip
Then I want you to strip
See you is my new chick
So we get our grind on
She be grabbin, callin me Biggie like Shine home
Man I swear she fine homes
Why she always lying though
Tellin me them diamonds when she know they rhinestones
She got a light skinned friend look like Michael Jackson
Got a dark skinned friend look like Michael Jackson

WTF..another song is "Breath in breathe out"...

Now even though I went to college and dropped out of school quick
I always had a Ph.D.: a Pretty Huge D!@k
Ladies tired of gettin' ripped off by guys like this
And givin' head is like 'oh well, the shoes and the toothpick'
Well, I'm in the club for a limited time
Act now and get some action for $free.99
Later on I might charge for ménage

yeah, a rapper talking about sex, girls, himself...and then jesus...definetaly the savior of rap...right...and you call me the hypocrit. I don't care for people who use jesus and religion to gain notoriety and seem "good". i'm not an extremely reliogious person, but using something others respect a lot jsut ot make money is stupid. Seriously, in the song "jesus walks" kanye says

"The way Kathie Lee needed Regis that's the way yall need Jesus"

wow, GREAT, GENUINE comparison!!! In the newest issue of BLENDER magazine (a music magazine, really good) they kanye talked about how he's coming out with jesus chains. The face of jesus is gold, the hair platinum, and the eyes diamond. now tell me that isn't hypocritical and EXPLOITATION!

i'm not mad at hip hop, i like the music and i only said it's good for dancing and "the coolness factor" because that's what the rappers themselves use it as. hip hop is, unfortunately, made almost only for commercial use by the public. There isn't anything wrong with listening to it, but people shouldn't take it so seriously nowadays. maybe 10 years ago it was more genuine, but not now.

ps-didn't mean for the post to be so long
