Discus: College Life: Is it like this at your college?
By Myway (Myway) on Sunday, October 10, 2004 - 12:07 pm: Edit

I am seriously thinking of transferring due to a multitude of things I hate about my college. And I was just wondering if these things I hate are prevalent at other universities, because if so, then I might as well just stay were I'm at.

-Do people ALWAYS come to class late?
-Is parking REALLY hard to find?
-Are the students "old," as in the kinds that have taken semesters to years off college?
-Are the majority of students concerned more with their jobs than school?
-Do people talk during the professor's lectures?
-Do you feel like the people at your high school were much more smarter than the students you encounter now?
-Do you get get the feeling that only a few students actually study?
-Do most of the students get bad grades?

where do you go to school?

By Welshie (Welshie) on Sunday, October 10, 2004 - 01:42 pm: Edit

1) No.
2) Sometimes.
3) No, but most all of the guys go on missions at 19 so it isn't uncommon to have 21-year-old Sophomores.
4) No, but a lot are concerned about marriage adn most everyone has an on campus job they work.
5) No, but I am in small classes so talking during a lecture would be easy to spot and would be doubly disrespectful.
6) No, there are a few really bright kids in some of my classes. Granted, the majority of the students aren't too bright, there are only a few I'd call unsmart. I don't feel pressured by the student body to "bring my A-game," so to speak, but there are definitely a few bright spots out there that I can have some intellectual discussions with.
7) Yeah, I get that feeling because a lot of folks are obsessed with marriage and social lives. People do crunch when it comes time but studying isn't a big deal (I know I don't do it).
8) Not really. I know in a lot of my classes the average grade was somewhere in the B+ range. As for my department, I need to get a ~3.88 or higher to get an continuing student full-tuition scholarship or a ~3.6 to get the half-tuition scholarship.

I feel dumber than the kids in my classes. Probably because I'm in the honors program and I went to a crappy high school that was too easy. But I'll adjust.

I go to University of Las Vegas Nevada.

By Welshie (Welshie) on Sunday, October 10, 2004 - 05:53 pm: Edit

Don't you mean University of Nevada: Las Vegas (UNLV)? You guys peat us (BYU) two nights ago in football, if that's any consolation.

By Myway (Myway) on Sunday, October 10, 2004 - 08:53 pm: Edit

Oh hahaha yes. I'm becoming so dumb from that school that I don't even know the propper name.

So we beat you at football, eh? Nope, no consolation as I am a sports illiterate.

Hey Welshie, I looked at your profile. Good choice in bands! Esp w/ The Shins, Weezer, and Modest Mouse. I also looked at your AIM away message (no I'm not stalking, just incredibly booored), and saw that you like The Postal Service. Very cool!

By the way, are you mormon?

By Musefinity (Musefinity) on Sunday, October 10, 2004 - 09:23 pm: Edit

Yes, wow. I am a big fan of every single band you listed as well. And I do love my Postal Service, in part because Ben Gibbard reminds me of (1) the perfect man and (2) home (Seattle). And Myway, I like your movies!

Sorry to get off-topic. Also bored...

University of Nevada: Las Vegas isn't your "typical" college. They do have a great hotel management school (i think it's #1 in the nation but don't quote me on that), so if that's what you're majoring in, it will probably be worth it to stay. However, if you're looking for the typical college experiance, i don't think you'll find it there.

By Welshie (Welshie) on Sunday, October 10, 2004 - 11:19 pm: Edit

Myway, yes I am Mormon and I actually prefer the Iron & Wine cover of "Such Great Heights" though the original has its own appeal. Also, you might want to check out Q and Not U, they are an... interesting band. Feel free to IM any time I'm there, stalkerish or not, it's fine with me.

I go to a state school where many students have jobs so they can pay their tuition. Some people are more concerned about their jobs. One guy in my engineering lab groups works 40 hours per week....night shift. Result? He is failing most of his classes, but won't quit his job for a variety of reasons.
There also a lot of older adults (non-traditional students). The school offers a lot of evening courses so many adults work during the day and go to school at night. You have to do what you have to do. My history prof got his degree will working full-time and raising two kids.

Hey Myway...UNLV was my back up choice. And I'm proud to say I didn't have to go there and said NO to all your questions. You sound smart, and why you didn't go to UNR over UNLV is beyond me, but make the most of it. Look into transferring somewhere eventually. If you're on the millenium scholarship, there's no complaining allowed!

1.) No. There's the occasional person, but they usually do a good job of sneaking in quietly.
2.)Parking is almost noexistant...but you really REALLY don't need a car. It's cozy. Everyone walks.
3.)Rarely. Most students are a little older than me, but I just turned 18 so that's to be expected.
4.)Nuuuu. The majority of students either don't have jobs because there's no time or have university jobs such as dining hall or oddjobs for one of the profs. NO one is concerned with it. Jobs are those annoying things that make it hard to finish studying or cut in to movie nights.
5.)Heh. No way. If they do, people glare them down until they shut up.
6.) HA. The people at my high school were braindead compared to the people here.
7.) Um no. I know one big slacker. Even HE studies on occasion and usually gets his work done.
8.) None that I know. But I don't really hang out with the partiers. They might.

Parking is a problem at pretty much every college in the US.

By Silent_Angel (Silent_Angel) on Monday, October 11, 2004 - 11:31 am: Edit

I have a question? At college, does there tend to be more "loose" um, "skanky" people than in high school?

By Fendergirl (Fendergirl) on Monday, October 11, 2004 - 11:47 am: Edit

it depends. at college, some people tend to be drunk, and as a result some may become "loose" and "skanky"

:P

here are my answers to your questions

-Do people ALWAYS come to class late?

I go late to class. well not all the time.. but i'm usually late to my 8 AM class. but if i know i'm going to be late, i go an hour and 15 minutes late because that's our halfway break and I can enter without making a scene. Plus, it's a very easy class and i don't really even need to be there. i also go late to my one other class, but thats only because it's a come and go as you please class. theres 11 kids in it, normally about 5 are there for class. i usually go about a half hour late, and stay for about a half an hour (the class is 2.5 hours long). i just go long enough to get my work done. (note - both of these courses are art courses)

-Is parking REALLY hard to find?

yes. parking is hard to find anywhere.

-Are the students "old," as in the kinds that have taken semesters to years off college?

Some, but who cares? if youre in college, you're an adult now. you should learn to deal with people a few years older than yourself. I love talking with the older, non traditional students. we can learn so much from them.

-Are the majority of students concerned more with their jobs than school?

not necessarily. for example, this semester, i'm taking 18 credits (six courses), plus i'm working about 30-35 hours per week at my jobs. i also do a little web design extra if i have any time (not lately). but i would have no problem taking a day off work if it meant doing something important for school. i'm also involved in three clubs on my campus, and one club at another campus. i'm a busy girl.

-Do people talk during the professor's lectures?

all of my classes have been discussion courses where you discuss everything as a class. this semester all of my classes are about 10-15 people so.. if you do talk while the prof is talking, everyone is going to notice.. so we dont do it.

-Do you feel like the people at your high school were much more smarter than the students you encounter now?

no. i find that many high school kids are naive, and or immature, and have a LOT of growing up to do. I have yet to meet many high school kids who make me feel otherwise. (and i know a lot of high school kids). I also feel this way about a lot of freshman because they have not done the growing up part yet. and i dont just mean kids at my school, i mean kids everywhere. kids that i know form work, kids that i see posting on forums.

-Do you get get the feeling that only a few students actually study?

no. here, if you dont study, you fail. Simple as that. here, you'll know after first semester freshman year who studied and who didn't. i know plenty of kids who have failed out after first semester.

-Do most of the students get bad grades?

define bad? myself, as long as i am trying, doing the best that i can - i don't care if i get a C. if i did my best i'llt ake all C's.

just my little opinion on things :)
