Discus: College Life: Painting Walls of Dorm to be not White
By Techieguy (Techieguy) on Saturday, October 09, 2004 - 01:17 am: Edit

I hate that the walls of my dorm are white, yet I'm not allowed to paint on the walls. If the walls were some other color like red, it'd be a lot more comfortable environment.

Has anyone had experience using poster paper as wallpaper and painting on the paper instead of the wall? How else can I change the color of the walls?

Hi techieguy-- first of all-- wow, a guy interested in dorm decorating. Ok, now that my shock is over-- I had the same complaint, and used fabric to solve my problem. I found this huge piece of very pretty fabric and attached it to the walls using velcro. Now I can hardly see the wall because I've put so much stuff on it. Large pictures (not posters-- posters are too cliche for college life), the fabric, calendar etc. Just a thought. Good luck! It isn't easy finding creative ways to make your space your own.

You could drape an inexpensive tapestry on a big empty wall (often sold near colleges). Or you could simply hang lots of posters and pictures so that it is hardly noticeable that the wall is white in the first place.

It would be fun to buy a giant piece of plain white cotton (like $5./yard) and tye dye it, hang it like a tapestry. You can do lots of fun things with tye dye, and it's very easy. And cheap :)

There are very large Bohemian style scarves that look great for wall cover. Also many patterned sheets (tie die, animal print, etc.) or tie die a white sheet. Walmart, Target have fun ideas, pillows, themes. What is your concept? Pier One has bamboo, tropical, fun party stuff. Pottery Barn has young sophisticated decor. Just some thoughts;)
