Are you conected to the internet?LOL :-)

I'm not sure. It depends on your connection and location. Here they have a top speed connection and the whole campus uses DC++. A movie takes 5 minutes to download and a song is almost instant.

wow... songs are really fast downloads for me but stuff like movies and tv shows take forever!
and yes, i'm connected to the internet... think before you speak, or you'll end up sounding dumb. How do u think i posted this if i wasn't connected to the internet? :P

If you have service pack 2 for XP, it will slow it down because they limited the number of ports or something. There's a way to get around it though.

At my school (UCSC) there is a limit to the amount of uploads and downloads you can do per day. If you go over the limit they disconnect you from being able to upload or download. Check with your school to see if there is something similar.

Lilyemerald, I was being sarcastic! Of course your internet Conection must be working if your able to post!

Service Pack 2 won't slow your downloads down.

Jl87d - So was I! ;P

Ok.. so will SP2 slow my downloads down or not? because if it does that i might want to remove it... but it was already slow before i downloaded it especially on ares... but bit torrent was ok.. but not bit torrent is like... not even connecting!

By Lame (Lame) on Friday, September 24, 2004 - 07:24 am: Edit

Bit torrent is probably not connecting because you might need port 8112 forwarded to you since you're now on a lan. It could also just be there aren't many seeds. Your school might also have something preventing direct connections from being established, and bit torrent relies on those. I'm guessing you don't use a client to torrent other than just regular bit torrent. Anyways, if you can't figure out how to use a program right you probably shouldn't be using it.

a lot of schools block bittorrent ports - you should find a direct download, not use bittorrent.. it'll take forever on bittorrent

By Icarus (Icarus) on Friday, September 24, 2004 - 12:57 pm: Edit

no SP2 will definitely not slow your downloads. Don't uninstall it - first, its not a fun process, and it leaves you vulneable to any security flaws that SP2 fixes. I agree with Lame - your school is probably blocking or severely restricting the bandwidth on P2P connections.

By Astro85 (Astro85) on Friday, September 24, 2004 - 01:21 pm: Edit

Well, SP2 does slow it down if you're using p2p. Dunno about bittorrent.

Actually, that link you provide says that it "could" slow it down, and asks for input as to the validity of this claim. I honestly don't think it will be noticably slower. Personally, I have seen no drop in speed at all.

Well, I can atest to it. And many other people on the Ares forum...but I guess you're one of the lucky ones.

Take your computer, open your window, throw it and see how fast it goes down. Then, your download speeds should be faster. Now your problem is the uploads, but who cares about uploading.

hey Sfbbgurl, i go to UCSC too. i was under the impression there was no download limit but the uplaod limit was 2 gig/day. i've downloaded a LOT since we've been here and nothing's happend with my connection.

By Lame (Lame) on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 03:39 pm: Edit

"who cares about uploading" I would say Bit Torrent users care about uploading ;)

By Hermit_Mmood (Hermit_Mmood) on Friday, October 01, 2004 - 10:53 am: Edit

no. bittorrent isn't working because there are no other uses (that are connected at the time), who have the entire cops episode downloaded. Someone who has the entire episode has to go online and when he transfers the rest of the episode to someone, that person can spread the rest of the episode to you and other users permitting he shares the entire file.

in general, the closer you are to 100 percent, the harder it is (and longer) to complete the file because there are very few users who have complted it
