As much as this PC computer tech hates to admit it, Thenarrator is right - Apple tends to have the best built laptops (especially the powerbooks). Do not get a Sony, HP/compaq, Winbook, Acer, or any of the smaller brands if you are going to go with a PC (which I still recommend). Get a Dell or Toshiba (in that order).

laptops - TOSHIBA! they make the best laptops (besides apple). next after toshiba would be Dell or Sony. I have friends who have had very bad experiences with Dell.. But I LOVE my toshiba :)

I have to agree with Thenarrator, Apples are just great machines. Expensive? Yes, but extremely well made and just darn sexy. As per PC laptops, I'd say IBM, Toshiba, and Sony hold the top three spots (ignoring companies like ibuypower, Alienware, and the like). Companies like Dell are fine for an average joe and might even be preferred by the average joe because they offer far more physically appealing features than, say, an IBM. I personally have an Acer (the price was right) and have been nothing but pleased with it thus far. Most everybody in my dorm asks to come use it (for homework) because it runs so well. Lastly, I'd just like to make the comment that many laptops from big name companies (Dell, Gateway, etc., etc.) are made by single companies like Sager and Compal. You can find good deals by buying these companies units from sites like powernotebooks.com and the like.
