College Discussion Forums: College Life: Should I get a credit card?

I was thinking of asking my parents if i could get a credit card. The problem is i dont have a job, normally i would be happy with the money my parents give me each month but there are no malls or anything around here so i was thinking about the card to buy clothes and stuff online. I would get a job some where around here but the problem is that sometimes i have have to go home suddenly to help out my parents or for emergencies. Is there a kind of card that my parents could put money into every month and i could use that instead of a credit card?

i think youre pretty lucky that your parents give you money.. period. none of my friends (and i mean none) get any money from their parents.. and i know hundreds of people at my school as well as other schools.. that's amazing. everyone here works. (right now i'm working about 30hrs/week.. come november it'll be about 8) if they don't work during the school year at school, they work at home during the summer and save up that money during school.. wow

anyway, a debit card is like a checking account that you put money into and the card works like a credit card but just takes money out of the checking account. theyre accepted pretty much anywhere that credit cards are. i got my first credit card when I was 16. I didn't get my debit card until i turned 18.

There is a Visa Buxx card--it acts like a credit card, but you can only charge up to the fund that were previously deposited in it.

Avoid getting a credit card now, esp with no job. Lots of kids really mess up their credit by being suckered into a card and overextending. The cc co's just figure the parents will bail you out.

It's a pretty normal thing, I think. My brother has a credit card. He gets money from our parents and his summer job. Buying new clothes is a luxury, the priority is buying groceries and stuff. Get an account for that.

You should consider paypal. They are an online bank. If you have a checking account, you can sign up and anyone with an email address can send you money. They can pay with their credit card, or from their own bank account directly to your Paypal Account. Also, you can now get a mastercard debit card to allow you to spend your money in your paypal account anywhere, you also get a cashback rebate, and they don't charge you lots of FEES. Prepaid mastercards, webbux and all those others charge you big fees. Read the fine print! I got started using paypal for my ebay auctions but now that I went to college my mom transfers money to my account for me occasionally this way and its a great situation for us!
