For some reason, I just can't imagine them having a laptop, printer, moniter, keyboard, mouse, and speakers, and STILL having room to write and put books on. My table at home is pretty huge and is barely holding all my stuff.

Why are you using a laptop AND a moniter/keyboard? That's probably a big reason why your "huge" table is barely holding everything. All that needs to go on your desk is your laptop, mouse, and speakers. Your printer can go under your desk, or under your bed or something.

laptop keyboards are too small and too poor quality for me, so I use an external one. And I use a moniter because they are better quality than a laptop screen and they're bigger. I play computer games, so...I guess that might be why I am kind of picky.
I guess I can leave my laptop closed and put the moniter on top of it? That would save a lot of room..And printer under the desk, thanks.

No, don't put your heavy CRT monitor on top of the laptop! The pressure will slowly damage the laptop screen and/or mash imprints of the keyboard letters into it. An LCD monitor might be lighter, but it still shouldn't be placed on top of a laptop.

On my desk I have:
Laptop with stand
Phone
Printer/Scanner/Copier comobo
Mouse/Mousepad
and still have a lot of room for other things. Granted, I can't really study with my books on top of my desk unless I push the laptop/stand back which I just don't like to do.

On my desk is a moniter, lamp, keyboard, mouse, printer, and a small square of open space for random stuff. (The tower is under my desk.)
The printer is set so far back that it doesn't affect study space. I just...don't have any. Books go in my lap. I'm left handed, so if I need to write something it actually works to clear off the little space and use it for that...but I usually just use he hard surface of the book in my lap.
I'm not hard to please in the study space sense. If I don't need a computer...I take off to the lounge or our futon.

My dorm desk is big enough for my large laptop, kleenex, picture frame, a stack of books, and some water bottles. But, it has one of those nifty shelves above it, which I also filled with books, a lamp, alarm clock, and phone. I say don't bring a keyboard and monitor unless you really need them. The speakers can be stored uner the desk or in a closet until you need them.
Eve though I have space on my desk, I would more my laptop off to do any serious studying because of the lack of space.

all desks at my college come with a shelf above the actual desk to hold printer/books/etc.. on my actual desk i have my laptop, my mouse, my speakers, and plenty of room to write. i also have four drawers in my desk to store stuff.

Yeah, I should expand a little on mine. At my... hmmm... "work station" I have a desk, with three drawers of storage, and a pair of shelves above with a lamp on the underbelly of the shelves.
On the shelves I have the following:
Gamecube with three controllers
PS2 with two controllers
Mini-iron
Cell Phone box
Misc. Reading Books
6 Gamecube/PS2 Games
1 PS1 Game (Chrono Cross)
5 CDs
Power cords for game systems
Risk: LOTR edition
Photo Paper
Hub.
On my desk, as I said, I have:
Phone
Laptop w/stand
Printer/Scanner/Copier combo
Mouse w/Mouse pad
In the drawers:
1st drawer:
All of my school books
2nd drawer:
Misc. school supplies (notepads, pencils, pens)
3rd drawer:
Dr. Pepper, Water.

ok.. here's whats on my college desk:
laptop, mouse, subwoofer, and about 1 foot room on both sides of my laptop for writing room.
on my shelf above, two speakers, printer, roll of duck tape, two big camera bags, and a pencil holder thingy
in my drawers are random books supplies and food
soooo if you figure that most desks are about that size.. i doubt you'll need to keep your gc and ps2 and whatnot on your desk, wouldn't they go elsewhere with a tv?

a lot of girls on my floor put their desks under their beds and put their dressers right next to them...bingo, you just doubled your surface area

I have an LCD Monitor, two speakers, a keyboard, mouse, and desk lamp. That leaves a small amount of room for putting stuff, but they keyboard makes it tough to study. If I want to study at my desk (which I don't even do that often), I just put the keyboard on top of the case, move the mouse back and work. It's enough room.

I have a lamp, clock, pen holder, textbooks, laptop, and mousepad. It uses about 90% of the space available. I keep folders and miscellaneous items in the drawers and print from the residential computer lab or elsewhere.
If you're struggling for space, then you should build up, not across.

I put my dresser under my bed mainly cuz it was easier to get at there and if I didn't already have my fridge and my shelves under there(and if I wasn't lazy) I'ld put my desk under there too. But right now I have two of those milk crate things stacked on my desk with the open side facing me. I put my books in the bottom one and my dishes in the top one. The top one also has a lamp wired on the side and a folder on top that I put my glasses and my cell phone/alarm clock on.

I've got a lamp, telephone, laptop, mouse, and printer [one of those 3-in-1s, mind you] on my desk, and it still has a bit of room left. I study on my bed, though.

thanks everyone. apparently I have plenty of room.
Laptop, moniter on top of printer, keyboard, and mouse. PLenty of extra room on a regular sized desk.
