is it okay to bring a subwoofer with our computer speakers, for use in the dorms? are the floors in dorm rooms generally reinforced well enough so that sound doesn't get through? yeah, sort of a silly question, but I sure wouldn't want to annoy the hell out of any students situated below me.

I guess it depends on where you live. Not all dorms are built the same you know. Maybe you'll even be on the ground floor.

either way there will always be some guy who doesn't care and plays it way too loud. I had one myself but nobody lived below me.

Don't worry about this - almost all half-way decent computer speaker system has a sub now anyway. Most have a volume controll just for the subwoofer.
But I can tell you that people will probably not care how loud you play your music during the day. (besides, the people below you likely won't be able to hear it) If you're blasting it at 4 am thats a different story. But there was pretty much always someone who had their music up pretty loud on my floor last year - it gave it a nice ambiance :-P
Btw, I have those logitec speakers that Legolas linked to - they are very good for their price. And yes that is a great deal.

i recommend the logitech line. i have the z340's (2.1) and am definately taking them with me.

haha in response to Simba, the extra two channels can be used to face the window and blast music out the window, as a few friends on my floor did last year. It was nice having some music walking up to my res hall :-P
