I'm a rising senior, I was just wondering about how many classes do people take in college per semester? Are people able to do well with 4 classes?

The number of classes depends on the school that you're going to and the major. I'm going to be an EE major at Cooper so I have to take 6 classes 1st and 2nd semester (for a total of 12)...so 4 classes sounds like a breeze to me..

You usually take either 4 or 5 classes per semester, on average, from what I have heard from the majority of people I know who are going to college. But it does depend on your major/program.

Im taking 5 classes for this fall, but 3 of them have LAB,1 has tutorial, and I have night classes for the remaining course... I've not yet started my program, so I cannot tell if it would be difficult or not, but it promises to be...

I'm taking six--but no labs, and one is a college success course

I've got a grand total of 10 classes this semester...had eight last semester (my first). I'm a music industries major, and this semester only have one core classes. I've decided that I'm preety much going to have to take core classes in the summer because the music classes take up so much of my time.

Kantgitrite: How do you find this course load? My daugher will be in a similar situation this fall as a sound recording major. She'll be taking 18 credits, plus 3 other required but non-credit granting music classes. I confess, I'm rather concerned at this load, but I can see that it's difficult to complete these type of majors without doing this, or taking summer classes.

Isn't average about 16 units per quarter and most classes are 4 units each so wouldn't 4 classes be the most commmon schedule (they dont even let you take more than 19 units at once...at least at UCSD)? I'm doing 16 units for my fall quarter for EE. That's 8 classes for the semester

most places 12 units is full time so 3-4 units a class would be four classes roughly...but that's not that much if you ask me...i'ld get bored

I have six classes this semester including the required freshman course.

Thanks for your responses! So about 4 classes is a stable number of courses to start off with to see how much one could handle? My fear is having to drop out of college! =( I want to avoid getting anywhere near that point. But at the same time I do want to graduate in 4 years.
| By Missegg (Missegg) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 09:39 pm: Edit |
if you want to gradute in 4 years taking 4 classes a year you're going to need to take summer classes unless the class carry alot of credit or your major doesn't require alot of credit hours.

Do they pretty much carry the same work load as AP classes in high school?

Sorry I wouldn't know...my school didn't offer AP classes and I haven't started college yet.

I'm a sophomore... taking 4 classes in the fall (2 with labs), but I've taken as many as 6 in a term, and each meets between 4 and 7 hours a week.

Jennifer, it is very common for music majors at my school to take that many classes or more. Most are only one credit and have a lot of requirements. For instance, I'm required to perform once a week solo, I take private lessons for piano and voice and sing in two groups, we have mulitple recitials that we are required to attend each week, I work and am also in a fraternity. I had a little trouble keeping up with evrything last semester, manly because I was pledging, but it's not that hard. To keep up with all the classes I have to do my homework during the day, in between classes and at lunch so that I don't feel overwhelmed at the end of the day, plus it helps that all the material is still really fresh in my mind.

At my college it was typical to take about 5 classes per semester, though some people took 4 or 6. That usually averaged out to 12 to 18 credits, the amount recommended for a full-time student.
