Are you guys taking TVs to college or are u just going to use whatever is in the dorms/suites?
By Missegg (Missegg) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 05:47 pm: Edit
My roommate's bringing one so I probably won't bring one of my own, especially since I can watch movies on my laptop. I know my dorm doesn't come with a tv...just a bed, a desk, a chair, a dresser and a closet with a shelf in it.

Dorms don't come with TVs, so if you want to watch TV, you'll have to bring one.
By Tdizzo (Tdizzo) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 06:19 pm: Edit
Quick suggestion:
1. Check on wheather or not your college allows cable in the dorms (some don't due to the fact that you need to drill a whole in the wall to run it in, crazy huh?) If it doesn't ask yourself wheather or not you want a TV taking up space for network television.
2. TV's can be a big distraction and do you really want one sitting right there in your room? Even the additional effort of having to go to a common room that doesn't have a remote is more then enough to deter you from watching TV. Our 61" Direct TV equiped Surround sound monstrosity consumed many an afternoon/evening that could have been better spent.

Yeah..I see the potential distraction Tdizzo. Do most people bring TV's or just use the common room?
By Trickdacy (Trickdacy) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 06:54 pm: Edit
I was talking to my roommate today, and we decided we're probably not going to bring one. I don't have one of my own, and I got the impression that he doesn't either. But even if I did, I probably wouldn't bring it. It's more fun watching TV with a group anyway.

Well, I checked off that I was gonna pay for the cable, so I better bring my tv.
Oh for videogames too.

another good option, especially if you have a large (over 19") monitor, is to get a TV tuner for your desktop. Much cheaper than a TV, and you will save space.
By Aquaholic (Aquaholic) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 10:04 pm: Edit
yeah... tv on the compy (especially if you are buying a new one and haven't bought yet) is the way to go. saving space is my #1 priority, because I know I'm gonna have a lot of other crap
By Ginnyvere (Ginnyvere) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 10:41 pm: Edit
Do you have to have a monitor over 19" to watch TV on the computer? I'm going to have a laptop which will have a 15" monitor. How much does a TV tuner cost?
By Matth (Matth) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 11:23 pm: Edit
NYU provides cable in their dorms so I'm bringing a tv. I've visited friends there and I didn't see one dorm room that didn't have a tv.
By Aquaholic (Aquaholic) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 12:09 am: Edit
Ginnyvere-TV tuners can get pretty expensive (mine was almost $200, an upgrade from windows xp to windows xp media center edition), but they can cost less depending on your machine. You can watch TV on any size monitor... computer screens are way higher resolution than TVs, so there's no minimum size or anything.
By Icarus (Icarus) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 01:08 am: Edit
no no no no - TV tuners are way cheap! Mine was $35 (upgrading windows does not count as a TV tuner - a TV tuner is a piece of hardware, not software)
Unfortunately, it will be difficult on a laptop, although I think they do make tuners for laptops (albeit more expensive)
By Czyrda (Czyrda) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 03:07 am: Edit
Just get a USB tuner if you have USB 2.0. ATI is coming out with a good one for about $100 sometime this month for example.

I have a USB TV tuner. It has stereo sound! It will come in handy since I will live in a dorm room that has been converted from a double to a triple.
By Haithman (Haithman) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 07:20 am: Edit
Quality is usually crap though.
By Czyrda (Czyrda) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 04:05 pm: Edit
That is not what I hear about the USB 2.0 ones but it could be true. I don't know if there are too many other laptop options though.

The comparable ATI card is a little more expensive.

How can anyone live without television???
By Ndbisme5 (Ndbisme5) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 01:17 pm: Edit
So I'm not the only one researching TV tuners! USB tuners can get pretty expensive. It would be great to convert an internal card to an external one. [looking for extra long wires]

I'm most likely going to buy this from ATI (over AverMedia because they have a cooler-looking website).

roughly how much is that one going to be?
By Winterfresh (Winterfresh) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 01:52 pm: Edit
I'm strongly thinking about bringing one but I can see myself ditching my 25-page report on human genes to watch football lol.
By Ndbisme5 (Ndbisme5) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 02:44 pm: Edit
I'm not too sure... probably over $100. I'm also looking into http://www.plextor.com/english/products/ConvertX-AV100U.htm .

hopefully my roommate will be really rich and bring a flatscreen that we can mount on the wall so it takes up no space.
By Smhop (Smhop) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 01:14 am: Edit
Brown gives cable to thier students in dorms... but I bet most people would rather go to a common room... on the other hand, you cannot exactly watch what you want that way... (like the poor academic forced to watch sports!)
How buot one of those tiny 5 inch jobs and a set of headphones?
By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 - 01:18 am: Edit
exactly, you can't watch what you want in the common room. Whoever gets there first is basically the one controlling it. When I was at cornell for a visit, there was an argument b/w two students about one of them always watching baseball, and the other guy was tired of it and wanted to watch what he wanted to. So basically, if you can, bring your own tv, but that doesn't mean you don't have to go into the lounge.

I am bringing a TV to college. My college offers cable in the dorm rooms. That's something you'll want to check and see if your school offers.

My roommate and I discussed a TV yesterday and I think I'm just going to bring one from home for us to share.
