The Greek system is composed of Fraternities (all boys), and sororities (all girls). It's called the Greek system because each Frat/Sor has its own name made up of Greek letters. A Fraternity is a group of guys that live and party together, and are infamous for having wild parties. Sororities are the same thing, minus the wild parties--substitute chick fights. Just kidding on that last bit. I know my definitions are faulty, but they're a start. Hope it helps :)

Please watch the movie called Animal House... An excellent treatment / sociological statement about the Greek System...

haha...
Frats are also an excellent way to make a group of life long friends with excellent potential for networking. There are many frats that are academic in nature and do more then simply party and booze. While that is certainly the reputation that many frats carry it is not fair to alot of fraternaties to describe them as that first. After all fraternity is from fraternal (brother) and THAT is the primary mission of fraternaties: brotherhood.

Some fraternities/sororities don't have their own houses. But if you're a member then you could probably count on paying fees (anywhere from $50 to $1000+ per semester)... of course this will vary by school and whether or not they provide meals/housing. Go to greekchat.com

The majority of supposed sororities are actually Women's Fraternities, not sororities, theres a difference...

Actually the only difference is in the name- those that are women's fraternities were started before the term "sorority" was used. I don't think there's really a practical difference.
