Definetly bring like flip flops or sandals if you are likely to be sharing a bathroom. I've heard plenty of horror stories about that sort of thing. Foot fungus and all that.

Hey, i was just about to start a similar thread about clothing in Wisconsin..
I'm from Memphis and don't know a thing about winter clothing. What brands or types of winter stuff do you suggest I look into buying (esp. winter coats!)? Honestly, my heaviest winter coat is a sweatshirt...

The best winter coats on the market for warmth and lasting ability are Columbia jacket... kind of expensive but worth it... i have had mine for a few years........

Dorm rooms at most places do not hold much. Best advice we heard was given during a UIUC visit:
1. When you first come bring only light clothing. In fact, most may only need enough for 10 days because they are going home Labor Day weekend and can bring more if necessary then. Thereafter, have enough to get to Thanksgiving. Usually heavy winter stuff is not needed before then although fall clothing is. At Thanksgiving, take home all light clothes (keep some of the fall stuff) and bring back the winter stuff; you do not need everything you own because you will be going home Christmas. Thereafter, you won't need any warm weather clothes until April and possibly beyond and thus for light clothes keep only a minimum amount for the rare occassional warm day.
2. You can have clothing shipped to you by parents and you can ship clothing back.
In other words, as they explained, have those clothes at any particular time that meets the season and make changeovers as time progresses. As to the question above about winter clothing and going to Wisconsin: don't buy any now, that sweatshirt will get you into October. If you have no winter clothes, wait to buy them in Wisconsin in October, by then you will know many who can advise on exactly what to buy and where to get it without spending a fortune.

you're from Min so you've probably got the cold weather gear down...I'd recommend enough clothes to get you through two weeks (about the normal cycle of laundy in college). Of course, you really only need two weeks of the essentialls, shirts can be reworn after all. I'd recommend bringing a couple of your favortie outfits for going out, enough that you don't have to re-weart the same thing on cinsecutive weekends...other then that, bring what you like, edit out stuff you know you won't wear, and there's always breaks to take stuff home.

The best winter coats I've had were good thick ones from the thrift store...don't bother buying an expensive Columbia jacket. Find the thift stores in town when you get to college, it will be your best friend. When it starts to get colder out the thrift stores will bring out the winter jackets and for less then a fancy meal at dairy queen, you'll be warm.
