I have this problem with my housing next year. I applied to this college as my last safety early in may because all my other choices had rejected me. I recieved my acceptance letter on june 9th but the deadline for guaranteed housing for freshman was june 1st and anything after that would be accepted on a as recieved basis. So of course i sent in my housing deposit the day i got my acceptance letter, but today i called them and asked them what the status was on my housing was and they said i was number 38 on the waitlist. Is 38 really bad for being on a waitlist? Does this mean i have almost no chance at a dorm? Has anyone here ever been on a dorm waitlist or heard of someone on one? I would ask the college for more info but they said that was all the info they could give me for now.

How many incoming freshman are living on campus? What could give you an idea of if #38 is good or bad. Say, a couple thousand were living in dorms, then you might have a shot still. Good luck. For now, you might want to at least consider other options so you are not "stuck."

Given his name is "Hokie" I'd say he's going to Virginia Tech, where 8000 students live on campus. You would think #38 would eventually get housing.

No i wanted to go to V-tech but it was one of the schools that rejected me. Im going to VCU in Richmond. Im not sure how many people live on campus.

Do you think that they would take financial status into account when they're makin decisions for dorms? Since they have my fafsa and all that stuff they can see that it would be almost impossible for me and my parents to pay for tuition and a apartment if i dont get a dorm.

Probably not. It looks like a time issue--first come, first serve.

In my day a lot of VCU students lived in student apartments in houses on Monument Avenue and other nearby streets. If you get a roommate or two and do your own cooking, it is not that expensive. You can walk to campus. It was fun.

VCU provides housing for about 20% of its students. There are about 13,000 fulltime undergrads. So 38 sounds pretty good. Especially by second semester. If you search on their search engine--housing, you'll come up with some interesting info, I am sure. There is assistance in finding off campus housing and there is a medical school room site that may even be helpful though you are an under grad.

My friend's son had to live off campus first semester at U of Iowa, but the new term brought vacancies.

VCU is notorious for sending out late acceptances! On-campus housing at VCU is limited, so being 38th on the wait list is not that bad. I'd give them a deadline, maybe around the first week in August, and start looking for a place if you aren't offered housing.

As far as financial aid, housing is calculated in your cost of attendance. If you don't get on-campus housing, the financial aid office will only deduct tuition and fees from your award and refund the rest to you to spend on housing, books, transportation, etc.

Apartments are often cheaper than dorm rooms. Don't despair, it might work out for the best. Check some of the bulletin boards at the school and the local newspaper to find people advertising for roommates. Also, ask the school if they have a roommate locator service for off-campus students.

I called them again today and they said i was #36, i only went up two spots in 15 days, i dont think im going to get a dorm before august 22nd which is move in day. Guess i have to start looking for a roommate.

When is the day that people can sign off the waiting list and still get their money back.... you might move up a lot on that day?
