There are some of the obvious frontrunners, like Yale, Princeton, or maybe Northwestern, in the English or journalism departments--but are there any others (most notably from the US News top 20) that really have above average programs in English-related departments? Does anyone know much about Duke's English department in comparison to the other top 10?

By Bunmushroom (Bunmushroom) on Sunday, June 13, 2004 - 01:43 am: Edit

This is for grad school rankings, but since english dept in a uni is the same for grad school and undergrads, many teachers overlap so this may give you some indication of the strong schools.
US News:

Harvard, Stanford, berkeley, yale are all tied for 1st place.

If you're looking for journalism, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is great. I don't know the caliber of Duke's English department (other than knowing that Duke is great in pretty much every department), but one of their writers in residence is Reynolds Price (if he's still alive).

Kenyon College, most LAC's

By Guitarshredder (Guitarshredder) on Sunday, June 13, 2004 - 11:09 pm: Edit

I've heard really good things about Kenyon.

I have also heard great things about Kenyon, and I definitely think that the LACs are good to look into. Sarah Lawrence has a really strong English program, and an exchange program to Oxford. But don't be afraid of the larger schools either. I found that the Honors program at UCLA is exeptional, and my goal is to get into one of the top 4 Grad schools (English major of course). Isn't it annoying that those rankings only tell you what the strongest grad schools are? What about Undergrad programs?! Very frusterating.

Yale the best

There's a ranking for undergrad English programs, as well. Gourmands it's called, I think? Yale is #1, followed by Harvard, Princeton and maybe Stanford.

Pomona College has a great english department and the best part is you actually get to meet/know your prof. No classes over 25.

By Missgirlie86 (Missgirlie86) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 05:27 pm: Edit

I was just wondering if there was a legitimate need to put "valedictorian" as your occupation.Doesn't that seem a little odd to you?

By Kk19131 (Kk19131) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 06:12 pm: Edit

If you say so. LOL

By Aeg315 (Aeg315) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 07:27 pm: Edit

any of the ivys and top LACs have comparable english departments... the quality of a particular school's english department is based solely upon the professors there, unlike that of a science program which requires great professors and lab facilities. i HAVE heard yale has a really good english department, but i don't see how it could be much different/better (if any different/better) than the english department at brown or at swarthmore or other top-notch schools
