I am going to college in the fall so i'm buying a laptop and i'm wondering if anyone here or know anyone that has their laptop stolen in dorms. I figure a laptop is probably the easiest and the most expensive thing to steal in a dorm room and some dishonest person would not pass up a chance like that. Are they anyways to keep a laptop safe in a dorm room (since there are roommates and they have the keys as well)?

I've never known anyone who got their laptop stolen. I secured my laptop using a security cable that attached to the back of the computer and I wrapped it around some part of my desk. While is not the most secure set-up, it is a deterrant.
The students who get stuff stolen from their rooms are the ones who don't lock their doors. You would be amazed at the number of students, especially freshman, who will go to class all day without locking their doors.

Slap one of these little suckers on your laptop, and it'll be super-safe:

I haven't heard of many cases of laptops being stolen, probably because people are usually careful not to leave their laptops where they might be stolen.
I have, however, heard of people stealing books from the library. Also, at the end of the semester, when many students returned their books for a percentage of what they originally cost (a common thing in our school), it was not unusual for students to steal each other's books. Some people stole my bike, which was locked up outside of the dorm room (they must've broken the lock).
A laptop, by most standards, is more desirable and more valuable than a bike, and things do get stolen, so be careful.

my floormate's laptop got stolen last year, but he never lock his door or even close his door when he's not in the room.

Tarheelhadley, i hope you were being sarcastic; those things are flimsy as hell. they put them on our laptops in HS, I had a friend who spent a physics class picking his off with his ID card. 800lbs of pressure, my ass. When mine (in college) got stolen, they had it scraped right off and covered over with a sticker (i got it back, which is a whole nother story) Safety on campus is a v. contextual thing, but at the end of the day you have to be able to trust your roommate. or get a single.
