Does anyone know if biomedical engineering will be accredited in 2006. I tried asking the Davis people advisors, and boy they seem really rude. They say they will not know, but i mean a college can tell if they pass the requirements for accreditation or not.. can't they? So anyways, anyone know if it will become ABET in the 2006?

The only UC that is ABET certified in that area is UCSD (they are certified as bioengineering). (and their are only 29 accredited programs nationwide).

If you check out the ABET certification criteria, you'll see that it is not very specific, and could likely be subjective (which would make it difficult for an institution to judge if their program can pass the requirements):

"PROGRAM CRITERIA FOR
BIOENGINEERING
AND BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING PROGRAMS
Lead Society: Biomedical Engineering Society
Cooperating Societies: American Institute of Chemical Engineers,
American Society of Agricultural Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers,
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and National Institute of Ceramic Engineers
These program criteria apply to bioengineering and biomedical engineering programs with the exception
of agriculturally-based engineering programs.
1. Curriculum
The structure of the curriculum must provide both breadth and depth across the range of engineering
topics implied by the title of the program.
The program must demonstrate that graduates have: an understanding of biology and physiology, and
the capability to apply advanced mathematics (including differential equations and statistics), science,
and engineering to solve the problems at the interface of engineering and biology; the ability to make
measurements on and interpret data from living systems, addressing the problems associated with the
interaction between living and non-living materials and systems."

Sorry that the advisor you talked to seemed rude -but in this situation they may really not have a way of knowing.
