I have relatives in Davis where I could keep my car as a freshman. Does anyone think this this would be beneficial?(Be able to travel to San Fran, Sacramento, Tahoe). Would a car be a great thing to have or a hassle in Davis?

What about parking at the UC Davis. Is it possible to just park it somewhere and not use it everyday as a freshman?

Thefrode989: I think it would be nice to have a car in Davis (for the reasons you mentioned), but not absolutely necessary... I don't know why it would be a hassle if you're parking @ your relative's house and just using it once in awhile. I would do it if there are no problems w/ it, but I'm not an expert on this or anything!

Neumeisterwd: All I know is that Davis says freshmen aren't allowed to bring cars to campus. As far as parking it "somewhere" else, that would probably be a challenge if you don't have relatives or something like Thefrode989. But I don't know for sure. You'll probably be okay without a car freshman year as almost every other frosh will be in the same position, I'm assuming.

i have a friend at davis right now, and i'm going next year too. she says that freshman aren't aloud to have cars and parking is pretty nuts. i don't think a car is a necessity there though, everyone just bikes it. but if you have a place to park i'd say go for it. i'll be your friend and you can drive me places! : )

Freshman are not allowed to purchase monthly parking permits on campus, and much of the city of Davis that is in reasonable proximity to campus has restricted parking. So, unless one has a relative or friend in town, where the car can be parked, - or unless one finds a garage to rent..., it can be quite a hassle. One can easily survive without a car- everything is easily accessible by bike or the free (for undergrads) Unitrans bus system. Davis has a train station, so it is quite easy to take the train into SF or Sac, or even Tahoe - and one can also get around by bus between cities.

On the other hand, if you have a parking spot at a home in Davis at your disposal, and you like periodic road trips, and you already have a car that will otherwise remain parked at your parent's house, then go ahead and bring it.
