I'm going to a school next year that allows frosh to have cars (Duke). I've heard, though, that having a car can be more of a hassle when one wants to deal with, and that it's kind of a bonding experience to run around with a group of car-less freshman organizing bus trips or begging upper classmen for rides. Anyone have any insight on this? What do the rest of 2008's plan on doing?

I would say hold off on the car for a year unless you think you'd absolutely need it to get around. It'll probably be more of a hassle as far as paying for a parking permit, having people use you for your car, etc. Especially if you're going to live on campus. Personally I would wait until sophomore year, but I don't know about Duke specifically...

I'm not bringing my car freshman year. Living on campus lessens the need for a car. Also, it's an expensive hassle for broke college students. However, my college (George Mason) is near a huge city (DC) with trains and buses to get around.

Hey...I applied to Bowdoin (tho im going to UMD where u cant have a car freshman yr) and freshman yr ur allowed a car...however, i talked to a couple students who had their car and they told me it becomes a hassle bc u become assigned designated driver all the time and people are constantly searchin you out for rides...parking can also be a hassle, tho i dont know about dukes parking deals...id say hold off unless you REALLY need it (like if you live close to home and plan on going home on the weekends and stuff)...otherwise, id say do the college thing and bum rides off others and taxi ur way through freshman yr =o). Good luck at duke, see you during basketball season...muwahaha
