Hey. I'm from San Francisco and i'm choosing between UCSB and UCSD. I'm white and I go to a 60% asian high school that's really competitive(lowell). I like being the minority there because I'm noticed. I also want to try out for a dance team in college b/c I'm on one in high school. I am a procrastinator but I definitely get down to studying when I have to. I won't have a car my first year. I wouldn't mind being in a sorority. I LOVE SF and so being in a big city like San Diego is a plus. But, I LOVE to party and be around fun, talkative, lively, and friendly ppl. . .and UCSB is the place to be for that so I'm told. I want to study communications or writing probably because I want to be a PR/events coordinator/behind the scenes media person. With my 411, which school is right for me in your opinion? Is anyone else going to UCSD's Admit Day and is in Roosevelt? I'm going! So respond please and maybe we can explore UCSD together!

UCSB for sure. Much more social and Humanties majors are more respected. UCSD is all about science. Also, Santa Barbara's State Street is really fun. You can get all over by bus. Not sure about transportation around La Jolla but UCSB is about a 10-15 minute bus ride from Santa Barbara downtown. To get from UCSD to downtown San Diego, you have to take more than one freeway. Not convenient & it's safer to walk to parties in Isla Vista than to drive to parties at SDSU or, worse yet, in Mexico.

Both schools are pretty science-oriented. I would have recommended USC for communications. Anyhow, UCSD would be like SF because there are lots of asians and you enjoy being in the minority. I'm pretty sure both schools have dance teams. San Diego's greek scene isn't too big b/c they don't have a greek row. UCSB has more parties and friendly people. I went to UCSD's admit day, but in Muir college. As for transportation in San Diego, they have free busses that will take you around campus or downtown. You can get around Santa Barbara by bus for free too w/your student ID. San Diego is a bigger city, and the school is better academically for many majors, but I'm not sure about communications/writing. Santa Barbara has a more happening social life and friendlier people though, so I guess it depends on what you're looking for.

I am a bit biased as I want to attend UCSD, however I can tell you at least around where I live SD is much much more respected than SB. I know many adults who would be our prospective employers and they see SB as an booze bath and nothing more. I also think UCSD is consitantly ranked well above UCSB, it is your choice though both have great campuses. I would also point out the party scene is nuts at SB its not parties its free for alls. I used to be up there a lot got sick of it.
PS: la jolla is a great area I walked "it" myself and there are at least 4 restraunt/bars within 3 blocks of UCSD. The places include rock bottom brewery ( 10 feet from campus, el torito (15 feet from campus), islands, tgif, cpk all with in walking distance in very nice large shopping centers. There is also pacific beach about 5 minutes south.
Feel free to msg me on aim for anymore info I know the area from first hand experience not from unreliable second hand sources.

They are both respected universities. SB is probably more fun and SD will provide you with the minority ID that you like. As for Mocksimus knowing many employers that see SB as a booze bath, I doubt he knows what he's talking about. An employer who sees a degree in a relevant field from UCSB would be ignorant to assume the student isn't qualified. And while we're stereotyping, perhaps if there's any public contact involved, he might be concerned that the UCSD student wouldn't be social enough.
